via Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

If Ryan, who has scored 261 goals in 866 games in his NHL career, shows he’s healthy, there might be a slim path of making the roster. Injuries during the exhibition season could also create roster spots.

The Red Wings have physicals and a charity golf tournament Wednesday — and open the on ice portion of training camp Thursday in Traverse City.

Yeah, right, take the spot of a more deserving youngster. No thanks.

More deserving based on what? If Ryan is no better than our top 12 forwards, he will not be offered a contract. We desperately need right hand forward. If Ryan looks good, I have no issue with 1 year deal. And we all know he will not play more than 40 games anyway.

Injury insurance and an extra body to practice, not gonna make too much of this.

I seriously doubt he’d take a roster spot from anyone who is more deserving. If he’s better than some of the youngsters, then he deserves to be on the big club. More competition in camp is good. If the kids aren’t ready for the NHL, some seasoning in GR is best for them. Berggren/Veleno/Raymond may be better off with some GR time, all together, and Ryan would make that possible by giving us a scoring winger who can also ride the press box when those guys are ready.

Remember, Ryan controls his stay on a PTO.  Good way to showcase himself if other teams are interested, he can walk away from the PTO at any time.

If he doesn’t cost the Wings any prospects to be lost on waivers I think its an ok depth move. Injuries will happen.

“Ryan said doctors discovered he had a deteriorated tendon that was torn off the bone.“

Ouch.  Well good luck to him.  If someone can’t beat him out then he doesn’t deserve to be on the team instead of Ryan.

Nailed it Paul.  Brass doing him a solid letting himself showcase and get up to speed.

Yzerholland2.0 doing what Holland1.0 does, bringing in washed up vets to take playing time from kids, except that in the 2.0 era we actually have kids that should move up from GR and are worthy of those rosters spots, AND more importantly, its not met with the same amount of outrage in response to the 1.0 version of the same moves?  hmm…

Have you tried reacting to the topic at hand, rather than complaining about everyone’s reaction to it?

More competition in camp is good. It’s a PTO, not a 3 year one-way deal. Stevie may be hedging his bets, giving him some options if Berggren and/or Raymond aren’t ready for the bigs, now that he has a little more data to go on.

Give it a rest, Murray. The idea that Yzerman is the same as Holland is ludicrous. The only place that exists is in your head. So could you please do us a favor and keep it there?  smile

Maybe he’ll accept sitting on our bench as the 14th forward, and be a good mentor to the young kids who do play, I’m fine with that, someone has to sit in the pressbox.

I wonder if Ryan would take a spot in Grand Rapids? I assume not, but if he loves the game, and wants to continue to play, maybe he would.

Yzerman is not the same as Holland at all, he drafts better and is willing to part ways with assets for better future assets.

But Yzerman also does a lot of the things that Holland did, before trading Mantha leading to the moves this offseason, everything Yzerman did was right out of the Kenny Holland guide to GM’ing a team, but its not met with the level of sky is falling vitriol by the fanbase, that it was set off when Holland did it.
That’s all.

David Booth played 28 games for the Wings and pretty much did nothing. Jussi Jokinen did not make the team. Thank goodness.

Also makes me wonder how banged up both of them are from the prospect tourney. Hopefully it’s more of a nice gesture to Bobby to bring him in and get him some time to showcase, but still makes me a little nervous.

Who would he actually be blocking? Chase Pearson? We don’t know that Berggren or Raymond are actually ready. And the long game, keeping Veleno in GR to be their talented center for half a season could be a wise move.

I’m not really a fan of this move regardless, but I don’t necessarily see who he would potentially be blocking.

As far as Ryan getting a PTO ... I told you months ago that was going to happen. Shame on you for not listening. He deserves it. When Fabs and Larkin and Bert were out hurt, Ryan stepped up and carried the team. Red Wings were hoping Mantha would but he didn’t. He pulled a Filppula and disappeared into the sideboards. 2 weeks later he was traded. At the very least, Ryan will push the kids to compete harder at the very least. I’ve been a fan of his since his days with Anaheim on the “RPG” line. I hope he plays well and gets a contract offer.

And as for you MurrayChadwick and your Yzerman bashing .... not only is it uncalled for but, you just don’t have a grasp on human behavior.
Standup comedians steal from each other, When I was program director of my college radio station I stole format elements from other stations I listened to. Everybody does it. Just because Holland hasn’t had success in the salary cap era doesn’t mean EVERYTHING he does is wrong. Yzerman has chosen the best bits from Holland and combined them with some of his own ideas. Maybe he got some ideas from Tigers GM Al Avila too. Who knows. Calling Yzerman Holland 2.0 is just ignorant.

I think two things make this ok in context:

1) it’s a PTO
It’s a chance and a showcase and a show of respect
to a vet who came in and was positive last season.

2) whether he signs is very likely injury-contingent

Veleno was solid but didn’t blow the roof off in TC.
Do we want him centering the top line in GR or fighting
for a 4th line bit part?

Raymond and Berggren will likewise also play in Detroit or get good looks
before too long. But NA is so new to both.

Guys like Pearson and Smith and Rowney and even Witkowski now and then are good for those 12/13/14 roles

We truly don’t know if and when Larks and Bert will be fully healthy
and effective. Ryan is a respected veteran leader who can add some offense in bursts.

Most of us were assuming Glendening and one of Gagne and Ryan would be back.
It says a lot Yzerman moved on from all of the forwards going to UFA, plus Svechnikov, plus Nielsen. And only re-signed Gagne. Rowney and Witkowksi are fringe/depth.

If Ryan is signed, he adds a right shot, some streaky scoring, and a calming, supportive veteran presence. He likely plays the half of the games key veterans are injured and young prospects at forests aren’t getting featured chances in Detroit.

If he doesn’t, it likely means we’re healthier at wing and SY sees the young Swedes as closer in health and readiness. It’s a nice gesture and option if he looks good to have him help fill in part time and short term.
There’s not a lot of depth of offensive prospects likely to be in GR other than V, R, B.
Not a big risk and no real logjam.

*Bert - *Larks - Vrana
Fabbri - Suter - Zadina
Erne - Rasmussen/Namestnikov - Gagne
Smith - Stephens/Veleno/Pearson (Ryan)
                      Rowney

Hirose                         Witkowski/RD
*Raymond *Berggren

The only guy with a similar skill to Ryan (shot)
below the top two lines is Raymond.

One or two of the top line forwards could be in a for a delayed
or cautious start to the season.

Even if not and no one else gets hurt, the bottom line depth isn’t so crazy and most of it doesn’t consist of offensive players. Who would be waived if Ryan was kept?
Rowney? Pearson? With the top three forward prospects starting as first liners in GR. I sort of doubt Ryan is signed unless there are injuries. But while we hate to see even minor ones, some are inevitable. Some guys coming back from injury simply take a little longer.

This team didn’t bring back:

Helm
Glendening
Filppula
Svechnikov
Nielsen

Suter is an affordable, passable second line center in his prime.
Stephens is a cheap, young energy line center/depth
Rowney is cheap veteran right-shot depth
Witkowski is a swingman depth enforcer

Smith and especially Rasmussen likely have full time spots
Pearson is very close to a 4th line center spot
Veleno, Raymond, and Berggren all have NHL talent and are likely to play in GR a little while to build chemistry and play big minutes.

Overall I see a lot more change than not and a lot more near-term chances for young players who are part of the future. But yeah there’s still some depth and veteran depth in supporting roles, in case of injuries, and so top prospects don’t sit as scratches or play five mins a night. This isn’t “tie goes to the vet, sorry try again next season”. It’s just situational organizational depth that all teams need.

Is Yzerman likely to have

Bert - Larks - Vrana
Fabbri - Suter - Zadina
Erne - Rasmussen - Veleno
Smith - Berggren - Raymond
Stephens   Pearson

on the roster all at once?

Not this season. Not until a few games maybe this Spring at the soonest.

A year from now, plus ideally a generational center in the mix?
Maybe.

I’m not bashing Yzerman, I like Yzerman, Yzerman is a good GM, I understand the move he made, and also understood the same move made when Holland pulled the trigger,  I was fine in both cases.

I’m critiquing the hypocrisy of the fanbase, its like these political diehards, when their old man leading their party does something its great, when the old man of the other does pretty much the same thing, its the worst thing ever.  Same is true with Holland with this fanbase. Its not the action, its the hatred or praise for the guy doing it.

You will have a point if Yzerman signs Ryan to a 3 years deal at $3 mil and the fanbase will praise that.
Or if he resigns DK to another 5 years at $5 mil this summer and the fans would say great job. These were the things the fans were mad at, not inviting a veteran forward for a PTO with no obligations from either side.

A total of 25 posts for both PTOs from maybe a total of 15 forumists. Basically the fanbase did not care that much about KH giving PTOs to veterans. As I said to you Murray on multiple occasions, you are too knowledgeable to go down this road of taking away your energy on discussing other forumists. When you stick to hockey, your posts are very interesting and informative.
