Abel to Yzerman

A Hot Adam Erne

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

It was Erne’s 10th goal in 35 games, a pace equivalent to 23 goals over 82 games. He has one fewer goal than team leader Anthony Mantha.

This is what Yzerman, as GM of the Lightning in 2013, hoped to see from Erne when Tampa Bay selected him 33rd overall, just three spots outside of the first round.

Opportunities on a stacked Lightning team were tough to come by. In Detroit, he has been an established fourth-line grinder and energy player and has played almost exclusively on a line with Luke Glendening and Darren Helm.

But that hasn’t prevented him from tapping into his offensive ability.

“Adam’s got good hands and he scored in juniors, scored in the American League,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “I know that’s a big reason Steve made the trade, because he believed there was some in him in terms of offense and that he could be a good 200-foot player that could provide offense. And that’s exactly what he’s doing right now. He blocks a shot, goes down and scores. Nice handsy goal around the net with a backhand shot.”

Blashill added, “He wasn’t given anything. He’s had to earn every inch of ice he’s got, and he’s done a good job of it.”

I wonder when he’ll get a shot on the top two lines? Seems like he’d be a good fit as the grit guy with Larkin and Zadina/Mantha

If his name was a different prospect that statement would be an issue with 98% of this fanbase.

Kudos to Erne and Yzerman for drafting and trading for him, I was not a fan of bringing him plus 3 other forward vets into the fold this year, proving to be a good move. Now the question, what do you pay him at renewal time, is he a 15ish per season goal producer, or was this fluky? RFA so we have some control

19.2% shooting percentage this year. Throw out last year (3.2%) and this year, his career average is 9.2%

Last year’s an outlier, this is a bigger one.

Both goals he scored yesterday were a goal scorer’s goals, but his trade value will never be higher.

Yep, when he first arrived I said who is this guy, never heard of him.  But a gold star for Steve’s jersey, he had his eye on him in Tampa.  I guess it will take a few years to get the Tampa out of Steve, and the knowledge he brought from their system.  Better that than take a risk on a flyer like Kenny use to do.
