Thrashers Game Picking Up
11/16/05 at 04:08 PM ET | Comments (0)
from Barry Melrose of ESPN,
After a terrible start, the Atlanta Thrashers are starting to show some life, and that's good to see. A big reason is that Ilya Kovalchuk is finding the net. He has six goals and two assists in his last three games, all wins for Atlanta. Kovalchuk is similar to Capitals rookie Alexander Ovechkin -- they're both big, streaky scorers who create plays and make things happen.

Grow Up Avery
11/16/05 at 03:40 PM ET | Comments (0)
from the Globe and Mail,
Sean Avery thinks the National Hockey League is out to get him. He's convinced there are people in the league's head office who spend their entire day following his every on-ice move while scheming up ways to get him in trouble. Why would they do this? According to Avery, the Los Angeles Kings resident squawker, it's because he's an easy target.

Khabibulin Will Rebound
11/16/05 at 03:05 PM ET | Comments (0)
from Larry Wigge of NHL.com,
In a new world of hockey, where a salary cap prohibits teams from stockpiling high-priced talent, Khabibulin went from champion to the challenge of lifting the rebuilding Chicago Blackhawks on his shoulders this season. "I remember when I was in Winnipeg and going into Chicago and feeling the tradition of playing against one of the Original Six teams in the NHL," he told me. "I liked the sales pitch (Blackhawks GM) Dale Tallon made. He seemed very sincere about putting together a good team. I liked that the Hawks had already signed Adrian Aucoin away from the Islanders and Martin Lapointe away from Boston. And I liked the idea of getting a chance to work with (Blackhawks consultant) Vladislav Tretiak. "And I liked the challenge. Winning the Stanley Cup felt so good, I want to do it again. Why not Chicago?"

from Stan Fischler of MSG Network,
-Didja Know Dep’t.: According to the new CBA, a player who has played 600 games is entitled to his own room on the road. “It’s the only thing we won in the CBA,” quips Chris Gratton. -After watching Sid (Der Bingle) Crosby and Al Ovechkin, against his club, an Eastern coach says, “Given a choice, I’d take Ovechkin on my team.” The Caps’ rookie’s physical dimension favors him over Pitt’s phenom. Ovechkin tells us he's just bought a house. -Have you noticed that most critics of the new rules – we mean the media members – never pay for a ticket? They’re impatient negativists who won’t concede that the NHL’s revolutionary moves are emphasizing the speed, skill and beauty of hockey.

Retro Jagr
11/16/05 at 02:09 PM ET | Comments (0)
from Kara Yorio of the Sporting News,
The lockout wasn't just time off from the NHL for Rangers winger Jaromir Jagr -- it was a time warp. After watching Jagr early this season -- what year is it, anyway? The retro Jagr -- confident, happy and productive -- has been a pick-me-up for a league that badly needed one. How did the transformation occur? It's no secret Jagr needs the right attitude to play to his potential, and it's also no secret he has had trouble finding a positive mind-set for years. Initially, there was no reason to think this season would be any different.read on

Hockey Goes Hi-Tech

from the CCHA,
You could call it The Real World - On-Ice Edition as CCHA teams play starring roles weekly in their own reality TV series. Plasma TV's, individualized DVD's and web access to personalized strength and conditioning programs mean a player in the CCHA never stops learning how to improve his game. "We can track every shift that a player has had through the course of a game, a weekend or a season," says Northern Michigan head coach Walt Kyle of the XOS Technologies video system used throughout the CCHA (and by the majority of NHL teams).
