Shanny Moves Up
12/07/05 at 01:47 AM ET | Comments (0)
via the AP,
Brendan Shanahan had two goals and moved into 15th place on the NHL's career list, leading the Detroit Red Wings past the New Jersey Devils 5-2 Tuesday night. Shanahan began the game tied with Mike Bossy among the top goal scorers in league history. He made it 1-1 in the first period, and his 575th goal got the Red Wings even at 2 in the second.Personally, I am surprised Shanahan has not been mentioned for the Canadian Olympic Team. He is having an outstanding season, and is the Wings MVP early this season. I now step down from my soapbox.

Hasek Not The Best Czech Goalie
12/06/05 at 10:21 PM ET | Comments (0)
from the Maven and MSG Network,
-The Ottawa-based clamor for Dom Hasek to be the Czech Olympic goalie is nonsense. Your Uncle Dudley could play goal for the stacked Senators. Tom Vokoun is better than the 40-year-old Sens’ stopper. End of story! -Toronto took a double-dip verbal beating from Tampa Bay. First, John Tortorella zapped some of the Leafs media, comparing them to Jerry Springer! Then, Tribune columnist Martin Fennelly dissed the hockey club. “The Leafs,” says Fennelly, “are the most overrated, overhyped, overwrought ‘elite’ franchise in sports.” So, how come, we have no problem with the Mapleos? -Boyd Devereaux on his boss, The Great One, as coach: “He’s much more intense than I thought he’d be,” says the Coyotes forward. “Nobody wants to be chewed out by Wayne Gretzky. But he hasn’t missed anybody. We’re used to it by now!”more from Stan...

Chatting With Spezza
12/06/05 at 08:58 PM ET | Comments (0)
NHL.com hosted Jason Spezza for an online chat session...
hockeygirl If you weren't a professional hockey player, what would you be doing? Jason Spezza Hmm, tough to say. I'd want to be a movie star or rock star. It's never something I put much thought into. Hockey was always my goal. It'd be nice to be a movie or rock star, I guess. They have a lot of fun. sarahlover Outside of hockey, who is your favorite athlete? Jason Spezza I like Tiger Woods and Mike Vick. Mike Vick is a guy that is fun to watch and dominates games with his moves every Sunday. He's a real athlete. Tiger Woods is a true competitor and he's a great guy.read on

Honoring Herb Brooks
12/06/05 at 06:59 PM ET | Comments (0)
from the Pittsburgh Penguins,
When you read about U.S. Olympic history, Herb Brooks is near the top of any story. His name represents many things, but most of all, Brooks was a winner. Brooks, who died in an automobile accident on Aug. 11, 2003, will be inducted posthumously into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Thursday at the Harris Theatre in Chicago, Ill. “I am very happy for Herb,” Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Craig Patrick said. “He’s not here, but it makes me happy for his family. It’s certainly well-deserved after what he accomplished as a player in the Olympics and also as a coach in the Olympics.”continued

The Special Six
12/06/05 at 06:31 PM ET | Comments (0)
from Darren Eliot of NHL.com,
Not too long ago, I took the train from Toronto to Montreal and idly watched the Canadian countryside amble by -- the entire time envisioning the days of the NHL's "Original Six" teams making the exact same trip. It got me to thinking of the NHL's initial entries and their place and relevance in the "new" NHL of 30 far-flung franchises.read on

Forsberg Has Groin Tear
12/06/05 at 06:27 PM ET | Comments (0)
from ESPN,
The Philadelphia Flyers will likely be without Peter Forsberg the rest of this week after the center told the Philadelphia Inquirer he has a tear of his right groin muscle. Forsberg, who has already missed four games, was first thought to have a simple strain of the groin, but he told the paper an MRI on Thursday revealed the tear. "There was more damage there that any of us thought -- more than I thought," Forsberg told the paper.continued

Will Anyone Recognize Thornton
12/06/05 at 05:11 PM ET | Comments (0)
from the Tri-Valley Herald,
There may be a few hundred hockey-wise people out there who grasped the significance of it, but the Bay Area at large still doesn't really have a clue just how colossal an acquisition the San Jose Sharks made last week when they traded for Boston center Joe Thornton. At least as it would rank within the respective sports, nabbing Thornton is bigger than the Raiders' swap for Randy Moss or the Warriors' deal for Baron Davis. Suffice it to say the A's couldn't acquire a comparably young impact right-handed stick unless they traded for Albert Pujols.more

Sled Hockey
12/06/05 at 05:02 PM ET | Comments (0)
from the Hampton Union,
A fresh breath of life. All the New England Bruins, a local sled hockey team, had it at last Wednesday’s practice at The Rinks at Exeter. Joking, laughing, yelling. As Craig Gray, the vice president of development, depicts a typical get-together or practice: "No mercy," Gray said, "they’re always busting on each other. It’s being around the team that charges my batteries. It’s so rewarding to me."read on
