Glavine Made Right Decision

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from USA Hocley,

Tom Glavine certainly had a tough decision to make back in 1984. An outstanding high school athlete, Glavine had played both baseball and hockey. The Concord, Mass., native was a four-time league All-Star and All-Conference honoree in baseball and was named to All-Star and All-Conference teams three times in hockey. June 1984 turned out to be a month of decision for Glavine. Within days, the talented athlete was first drafted by the Atlanta Braves and the Los Angeles Kings. There were even a number of colleges trying to recruit the youngster. History indicates that Glavine made the right decision by choosing the Braves.

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from MSG Network,

In other developments that affect the Devils' salary cap-afflicted roster, star LW Patrik Elias enjoyed a full practice with the team as his road to recovery from a severe case of hepatitis draws near an end. Robinson also said that defenseman Vladimir Malakhov, who was not at practice, has retired. The Russian blueliner was signed as a free agent last summer to help fill the void left by the departed Scott Stevens and Scott Niedermayer.

NHL Bizarro World

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from The Hockey News,

Ladies and germs, welcome to the new NHL, where up is down and down is sideways and Bob Goodenow is doing cartwheels that he got the heck out of Dodge when he did. Just when you thought labor peace had finally arrived, the NHL and NHL Players' Association could be headed for their first significant disagreement over the new CBA…but it's not the kind of fight Goodenow used to relish. Better pull up a chair 'cause this one's a beauty. The union is considering pushing for a lower-than-expected salary cap next season. And if it does, the NHL will probably tell 'em to take a hike.

Gomez May Be Moved

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via the NY Post (reg. req.),

Scott Gomez learns today his status for the U.S. Olympic team. The issue that will remain unsettled is his standing with the Devils. Gomez and Alexander Mogilny were benched by Larry Robinson for most of the final two periods of Saturday's 4-1 loss in Carolina. With the Devils looking like a team needing a big shakeup, Gomez could be a trade candidate, and Calgary and Phoenix would seem possible destinations.

Hey Kid, Settle Down

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via the LA Times,

Zenon Konopka was brought up from the Ducks' minor-league affiliate in Portland, Maine, to provide a boost of energy on their fourth line and play the role of a pest against opposing teams. Konopka is also an excitable sort who is admittedly wide-eyed about playing with and against some of the players he grew up idolizing. "When we were playing Detroit, I was yelling on the bench and [Brendan] Shanahan and [Steve] Yzerman look over and say, 'Hey kid, it's a 1 o'clock start. Settle down,' " he said. "For a half second, you look and see it's Yzerman and Shanahan and then after that half second, you tell them to buzz off or some other word I can't use now."

Team USA Looking For Offense

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Denver Post,

The league's top 50 point-producers include only four Americans, and the highest ranked of those is New Jersey's Brian Gionta at No. 27. The Hull, you say? Nope, he's retired. Roenick? Guerin? LeClair? Old, old, old. Four other countries cram more players onto the big list. Canada, the Olympic tournament's top dog, has 21. Slovakia, a gold-medal dark horse, has seven. (Hello, Marek Svatos). Russia has six. And Sweden has seven. (Goodbye again, Peter Forsberg). Tonight, U.S. Olympic hockey officials will turn in their final, Italy-bound roster, revealing 23 names and one big question: Where will this team find its offense?
