Could Boyton Get An Offer Sheet

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Milford Daily News,

There may well be one or more NHL general managers out there right now scheming about how they can steal unsigned free agent Nick Boynton away from the Bruins. Why in the world wouldn't they be? The opportunity is there for one of them to land a 26-year-old, solid, all-round defenseman who played in the last All-Star Game, without giving up anything more than a first-round draft choice and one or two lesser picks. If the Bruins sent out word they were willing to trade Boynton for that price, say a No. 1 and a No. 3 pick, there'd be 29 teams eager to make that deal.

NHL Names

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Jes of Hockey Rants fame is having a few issues with the pronunciation of hockey player names. Jes also refers to the NHL Pronunciation Guide, which I never knew existed but I did find an old version from the year 2000 (the link appears broken but scroll down).

Getting In Hockey Shape

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from DOSE,

Since St. Louis Blues “star” Keith Tkachuk was suspended for showing up to training camp overweight, we’ve been wondering about a few things. Was Tkachuk going for that throwback King-Clancy vibe, when players smoked between periods and ate whatever they wanted? Is his new line going to be called the Waist Line? What does it take to be in shape for NHL training camp?

Kronwall Update

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the AP via the Sun-Sentinel,

"He has some ACL and MCL damage," general manager Ken Holland said Wednesday before the Red Wings hosted Columbus. "He's going to be examined Friday, and we'll know more about his status after we get some more opinions." Holland said Kronwall, 24, could have had a season-ending injury, though the team is hoping it's not that serious. The Red Wings open the season Wednesday at home against St. Louis. Under the NHL's previous collective bargaining agreement, the Red Wings might have traded draft picks and prospects for a high-priced defenseman, but that's not an option because of league's new salary cap. "We have to roll with what we have because of the CBA," Holland said. "We're certainly not going to be able to make a move to replace Niklas Kronwall."

More On Saskin

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via Sportsnet,

It's no secret, Ted Saskin's secret ballot vote continues to attract attention. Sportsnet has learned as many as 28 players have filed a complaint with the US National Labour Relations Board in an effort to stop the NHLPA's secret ballot vote. Saskin's original appointment was openly criticized by members of the players' union after it was learned the deal was ratified over the phone. The PA bylaws state the appointment must adhere to the secret ballot process in order to be considered legitimate. Players and hockey officials have made it known the majority are in agreement that Saskin is the man for the job, but until procedure is followed and ratified, the appointment will remain a contentious one.

OLN HD

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from an OLN Mod at the OLN TV forum:

OLN is producing one game a week in HD, which will be made available to all of our cable and satellite providers. Please check with your provider to find out where they will be offering OLN's HD games.
I checked with my sources at Comcast in the Detroit area, and they have no idea what is going on with any HD offerings. This could be a last minute, seach for a channel type deal.

Rebuilding Without Your Superstar

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

This sure is a wacky way to build a Stanley Cup contender. Rebuild your team from the ground up with grit, veteran scoring, a blue-chip goaltending prospect, and a big defense with lots of offensive upside, and then refuse to sign your best player. Uh, wait a minute. Actually, it doesn't seem like the way to build a Cup contender at all. After deftly refurbishing his team since the end of the 2003-04 season, Atlanta GM Don Waddell has become immobilized on the single-most important element in transforming the Thrashers from perpetual pretenders to legitimate Cup threat: signing star forward Ilya Kovalchuk.

Speaking His Mind

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Wednesday evening, so let's play a little game of "Who Said This". To reveal the answer, just click here or read the whole article. from Time,

I’ve always had a great respect for old time musicians and the Grand Ole Opry and the tradition, it’s just such a great forum, and not just American, but Canadian, too. We had guys like Hank Snow, and he was singing songs like The Good Ole Hockey Game, before the NHL failed and started to change the rules of the game because they screwed up the strike last year, and now they’ve changed the whole way hockey is. It’s a complete joke. The only reason I go to hockey games is because I get to go with Ben. But now that they’ve changed the rules, I’m wondering how I’m going to explain to Ben that I don’t want to go to the hockey games anymore. I know my dad would be going nuts. These people changed the rules just for TV money, and it’s a joke. They have no respect for the game. Anyway, that’s a different subject.
