CBC Knows Which Side Its Bread is Buttered On

The provincial elections in Ontario are set to happen on October 6th. The problem is, the Toronto Maple Leafs season opener with the Montreal Canadians (plus a Vancouver Canucks/Pittsburgh Penguins matchup) are going off on the same night.

CBC has historically cancelled most regular programming on election nights, to keep viewers informed as the results come in.  But knocking out the season-opening game for the Leafs?  In TV-ratings land, that’s seriously bad politics.

And so…

Toronto.com reports on election night Oct. 6,  the CBC will broadcast the season-opener between the Leafs and Montreal Canadiens, followed by the Vancouver Canucks-Pittsburgh Penguins matchup.

Precipitating this decision was the Toronto Star’s online poll, to find out what viewers wanted.  Hockey won, with 65% support.

“Show the Leafs game,” said a commenter with the handle K-Mart. “We can find out the results of the election in the morning, but let’s be honest elections are never so exciting that we need to watch them minute by minute.”

“I’d rather watch paint dry, but since that’s not an option I’ll take the Leaf game,” quipped highland girl.

“Hard choice as to which one to watch isn’t it. They are both blood sports with overpaid bullies participating. Lol,” noted old man.

And so it is written.

Let’s just hope Leafs fans at least remember to vote before game time.

To be fair, other networks that broadcast over the air (such as CTV, Global, City-TV and even TVOntario) will be airing the election results that night.

Indeed. As is CBC Newsworld.  Election junkies will get their fix.

Personally, I have NO problem with CBC’s decision here.  Honestly, I can’t think of anything more boring than watching up-to-the-minute provincial post-election results on TV for 6 straight hours. I’d rather watch the games and then check the late news before bed. smile

That said, CBC is publicly-funded. If they weren’t broadcasting the game, it’s not like no one else would step in and do so themselves.

You are aware that they aren’t canceling the election, right?

They only postpone election debates up here for hockey, not the elections themselves. We’re not *that* crazy.
