Youngsters Are The Key To Detroit’s Rebuild

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

How quickly the Detroit Red Wings complete their rebuild and become consistent playoff contenders depends to a large extent on the impact of their top draft picks.

Defenseman Moritz Seider and winger Lucas Raymond, the first two first-round selections under general manager Steve Yzerman, are entering the league together, making their NHL debut Thursday against Tampa Bay at Little Caesars Arena.

They will be franchise cornerstones for many years if all goes according to plan. Adding their youth and talent to a team that has missed the playoffs five years in a row has created more anticipation for the 2021-22 season.

“That’s great for our organization and our team right now because I believe they make us better,” Detroit captain Dylan Larkin said. “They’re two great kids that are going to continue to work and elevate their game. They’re going to learn pretty quickly what the NHL is all about on Thursday night. You don’t know until they do it. They look good so far and I know Lucas and Moritz will keep working to ensure they’re impact players.”

LOL something about this makes me laugh.  Remember when Larkin was selected to stay on the Wings for his rookie season “because he makes us better”?  That’s been a quick three years.

Four.

Five.

Six.

So the same is being said about Raymond and Seider, hope they make a positive impact as well.  Larkin needs help lifting the team up.

It shows how much the team has turned over
that Staal and DeKeyser get the “A”s and you look at
roster and think: yeah…can’t really think of anyone else who
makes more sense.

Interestingly, both are UFAs this coming Summer.
If DeKeyser looks great I could see a short term extension
for less money for the sake of some defensive stability.
Maybe he’d be more of a third pairing guy. Staal is by all accounts
a very respected veteran leader.

Of course Bert is notable by omission. Or is he keeping his A and
Staal and DeKeyser are the other alternates?

from Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

The two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning will play the Detroit Red Wings Thursday (7:30 p.m., Detroit Bally Sports). It’s the Red Wings’ Opener and Game 2 for the Lightning (0-1). Here are seven reasons why can their first game against a prove champion:

1. Lightning slipping?
The Lightning looked disinterested and out of sync in their 6-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins in their Tuesday opener.  They didn’t look like a championship-caliber team.

2. Tight Games Last Season
The Detroit Red Wings were competitive against Tampa Bay last season. On April 4, the Red Wings defeated the Lightning 5-1 to end a 10-year losing streak in Tampa. They were 0-16-1 in their previous 17 game at Amalie Arena. Overall, the Red Wings were 3-4-1 against the two-time Stanley Cup champions in 2020-21. Two of their losses were by 2-1 verdicts.

7th youngest team in the league.

Only one forward over 30. 3 D over 30. And all of them + Greiss are in the last year of their contracts.

And the average age was tight.  The 5th youngest was the Ducks at 26.83, Preds 26.85, Wings 26.86.

Does anyone else completely write off a writer/website when they throw junk like that up in the first paragraph? I’m sure the writer and site are great, but if you can’t bother to proof the opening paragraph then i’m out.

On a higher note, I’m thrilled for the youth movement. The sooner they get through the growing pains the sooner they can start competing. Mistakes will be made and games will be lost, but at least the players making them will be on a different trajectory than the ones we’ve seen the past few years.

“Lightning slipping?”

They lost one game, maybe a little too early talking about slipping
