Would You Welcome Tomas Tatar Back To Detroit?

from Stu Cowan of the Montreal Gazette,

Tomas Tatar doesn’t want the relationship to end.

For the last three seasons, Tatar’s regular linemates with the Canadiens have been Phillip Danault and Brendan Gallagher. But when the Canadiens play the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 6 of their first-round playoff series Saturday at the Bell Centre (7:30 p.m., CBC, SN, TVA Sports, TSN 690 Radio, 98.5 FM) it could be the last time they ever play together.

The Canadiens are facing elimination for the second straight game after winning Game 5 by a 4-3 score in overtime Thursday night in Toronto. Tatar and Danault can both become unrestricted free agents at the end of the season and it seems unlikely they would both return with the Canadiens already up tight against the NHL salary cap. It’s also possible both of them will be gone.

“Honestly, I just want to enjoy every shift with Brendan and Phillip,” Tatar said Friday. “You never know when it’s going to be our last one. Both of us contracts expiring. NHL is a business. You can’t keep everyone. You have to make some decisions that have to be made at the end of the season. I had one of the best three years of my career, for sure, playing with these two guys. We were so close on and off the ice. Honestly, I just want to play as long as possible with them. So hopefully we can give it all tomorrow and we can play another game in this series. I just want to enjoy it with them. They are my great friends and we have become pretty close friends. So to me that’s something very special that was built here in Montreal with this team and I will probably never forget it.

Sure.  I loved Tatar in his prior stint with the Wings.  That being said, it makes zero sense to bring him back now, except on a one year deal (which he’d never agree to).  We need to be in the lottery again next year.  Our team does not have enough star talent in its farm system yet.  Next year’s draft is supposed to be deeper than the usual.

If you bring in Tatar, who do you move out of the top six?  Bringing him in is going to stunt one of our kid’s development paths.

Great player.  Love his heart.  But now is not the time.

Wonderful player.  Got his Cup in ‘08.  Amazing enthusiasm for the game.  Role model was Zetterberg.

But no.  Then again, Yzerman brought back Filppula in a surprise signing.

Love Tatar but we don’t need to sign any wingers. We need a center, a goalie and some LD this off-season.

The wings aren’t shooting for the playoffs for the next 2 years and Tatar is probably looking for at least a 3 year or longer deal so it probably isn’t a good fit. I am guessing other teams would probably interest Tatar more.

Tatar isn’t that old. He first appeared on RW roster in 2011.

Ol Helmer was the 08 black Ace.

No chance in hell. He would add nothing to the team from either a defensive or offensive standpoint. Just not what we need at this time of the rebuild.

One of my favorite Red Wings, but probably not the right timing for signing 30 year olds.

Ah,  NO!  I have watched every Leaf/Canadian game and he has been no where.  He hasn’t hit anything and he has stayed far away from the boards.  I think he left on his own? then he shouldn’t even be considered.  Whoever mentioned Filipula, another BS signing, most of these guys in their 30’s are looking for a paycheck and/or a cup.  They are not interested in playing a regular season unless they can spend most of it on the DL.
