Wings Sign Pontus Andreasson

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today signed right wing Pontus Andreasson to a one-year contract.

Andreasson, 23, recently completed his first season with Lulea HF in the Swedish Hockey League, ranking among the SHL’s rookie leaders with 18 goals (2nd), 20 assists (T1st), 38 points (2nd), five power play goals (2nd), 13 power play points (2nd), 22 penalty minutes (2nd), a plus-19 rating (1st), and 15:30 average time on ice (6th). The 5-foot-10, 183-pound forward also recorded 13 points (8-5-13) in 13 postseason contests, helping Lulea reach the SHL playoff finals.

A native of Munkedal, Sweden, Andreasson spent the previous two seasons with IF Bjorkloven of the second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan, notching 52 points (18-34-52) and 28 penalty minutes in 103 games. Andreasson also logged 11 points (4-7-11) in 18 postseason contests and helped Bjorkloven reach the playoff final in 2020-21. He also compiled 48 points (18-30-48) in 49 games for Hanhals IF of the third-tier HockeyEttan from 2017-19. Andreasson made his SHL debut with Frolunda HC during the 2017-18 campaign and also appeared in two Champions Hockey League contests that season. Prior to turning professional, Andreasson racked up 48 points (14-34-48) in 84 games for Frolunda in the under-20 level and 56 points (20-36-56) in 64 games for Kungalvs IK in the under-18 circuit.

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Steve Yzerman wants to field a competitive team, and to that end, took a flier on an undrafted European player.

The Detroit Red Wings signed Pontus Andreasson, a 23-year-old forward out of Sweden, on Monday to a one-year deal.

Signing an undrafted European hasn’t yielded great results for the Wings in recent years, but there’s little risk compared to the potential for reward. Andreasson (5 feet 10, 183 pounds, shoots left) had 18 goals and 20 assists in 52 regular-season games with Luleå and 13 points in 13 playoff games. Luleå lost to Farjestad, 3-0, in Game 7 of the finals.

The Wings hope Andreasson fares better than Mathias Brome….

In prior years, the Wings also have taken a flier on European free agents including defenseman Libor Sulak and goaltenders Harri Sateri and Matěj Machovský. None made an impact.

The Wings have 10 forwards under contract through next season. Jonatan Berggren, a second-round pick from the 2018 draft who had 21 goals among 64 points in 70 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins this season, is expected to challenge for a job in Detroit next season. Yzerman, though, said a few days after the season ended that he won’t hold spots open for prospects — they have to prove they belong in the lineup, like Lucas Raymond did last fall.

Oh great. Now we can look forward to the ‘Church’ line:

(Saint Joseph) Veleno, (Pope) Pius Suter, and Pontus (Pilate) Andreasson

Maybe Pontus can pilot the PP to some goals.

Oh, that’s been done.

I haven’t been amped up for trotz.  Just don’t see it or really want it.  Can’t say exactly why but I don’t like the taste of it.  I do think he’d be a great fit for that Winnipeg team though and his ties are a bonus.
