Waiting On Derek Lalonde?

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Given how much time he has had to interview available candidates, Yzerman may be waiting for the Stanley Cup Final to end so he can talk to Derek Lalonde, who has been an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning since Yzerman's last year with the team. Lalonde, mentioned early on as a candidate by the Free Press, was an assistant at Ferris State early in his coaching career, and has been a head coach at the USHL and ECHL level. He coached in the latter with the Toledo Walleye from 2014-16, before Yzerman's return to Detroit but during Toledo's affiliation with the Wings. During his first season, Lalonde led the Walleye to a 50-15-5-2 record, claiming the Brabham Cup as the ECHL's regular-season champion. Before being hired in Tampa in 2018, Lalonde was head coach for two seasons in the AHL with the Iowa Wild.  During his tenure (69-58-17-8), the Wild posted team records for wins, home wins, road wins, fewest losses and total points in a season.

Yzerman plucked coaches from the AHL the two times he hired head coaches in Tampa: Guy Boucher in 2010, and, after firing him in 2013, Jon Cooper, the former Lansing Catholic coach who has the Lightning competing for a third straight Stanley Cup. Yzerman may see a situation in Detroit ideal for doing so again: The Wings are in a transitional stage, ready to take the next step in the rebuild but not yet at contender status. Lalonde, 49, doesn't have the leverage or salary demands of high-profile coaches such as Quenneville or Barry Trotz. Lalonde could be hired on a two- or three-year deal, giving Yzerman an opportunity to see if he can improve the Wings defensively, which was one of the chief criticisms Yzerman leveled at Blashill in announcing the coaching change.

Lalonde has been around alot of winning. I assume he’s learned alot from Cooper, who I consider to be the best current coach in the league. This article reinforces my gut feeling…..

I am assuming SY already interviewed him or at least spoke? I mean what if he says no, there is nobody else left to hire except for Blashill:)

I’m as anxious to find out who the next coach is as anyone, but I’m also fascinated at SY’s ability to control information flow. I wish I could do that.

I think that would be tampering if they had spoke about the position.

I think it comes down to people having the utmost respect for the Captain. He gave everything to this organization and I believe everyone in return, is respecting his wishes on the not say anything boat. That or Stevie Y doesn’t tell a soul what he is doing until the hammer needs to hit the nail. But it’s going to be interesting. Will their be a collective groan like when he drafted MoMo. Or will a super shocking homecoming of the years past. We will all find out.

I’ll say it again, there is no urgency because I don’t think he’s hiring one of the NHL regulars.

If it is Lalonde, well he already knows him from Tampa so I doubt they’d have needed a formal interview. Let’s not forget, Lalonde is probably pretty darn busy right now, anyways.

Regarding Stevie and info flow, part of it comes down to him having a very tight circle. They themselves have even said that Stevie doesn’t share much with them. He’s like a mob boss.

You can see that Stevie is like a chess player. He spends the majority of his time planning and thinking, and very little time executing. He’s an expert in that.

One thing SY doesn’t have to do is talk a lot
to try and impress people or sound important!

It starts with self-discipline.
And it’s a good lesson for all of us:
do I really need to share this info or these details
- what would motivate me or give me that impulse to
share info others might covet - and what might they do with it?

Some people consider being confided in an honor and sign of trust and
respect - that’s the value of the secret (other than perhaps how you can
help a trusted friend or family member by listening or giving advice, if wanted).
For others, secrets are currency and something to show off via gossiping about what you heard.

In any case, it’s nice as a fan not having major decisions leaked and undermined.
As long as a leader has a trusted group of smart people who maybe think a little differently, and aren’t afraid of speaking honestly to the boss, it doesn’t have to be an insular system in a bad way. No GM is going to get every call right or anticipate and jump on every move. But the results have been pretty good so far.

I would be willing to give Lalonde an opportunity.  He did very well with the Toledo franchise in the Wings organization.  Blasshill was given a chance coming out of GR, so I believe Lalonde should be given a shot.  However, we need to see improvement, both defence and PP, PK.  We need to see the playoffs again, next year.  The fan base will not increase until we feel an excitement about the team.  Michigan is a hockey hotbed, many young guys are being developed, the fan base in GR is good but needs a boost but in Toledo its hard to get a seat.  The Wings have a great arena and a great drawing area, we can have a full house.
