Waiting On Blashill And Looking At Scotty Bowman

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

What “very quickly" means to one person is not necessarily reflected in another person’s meaning.

The Detroit Red Wings’ season has been over since an overtime loss Saturday night in Columbus, and general manager Steve Yzerman still hasn’t shown his hand regarding Jeff Blashill’s coaching future. Last month, Yzerman said he’d sit down with Blashill “very quickly” after the season ended, but it has been two days and counting since the final horn.

Yzerman’s comments April 12 indicated he already knew what he was going to do: Extend Blashill’s contract, inform him his time with the organization is over — or perhaps tell Blashill there’ll be a new coach coming in, and offer him a different position, such as scouting.

from Bill Dow at the Detroit Free Press,

As part of his series on former Detroit sports figures, Bill Dow caught up with former Detroit Red Wings coach and hockey legend Scotty Bowman....

Bowman on coaching players:

“When you go to a new team, it takes a while to get to know everybody. Some players, you cater to more than others. Some players have to be pushed and prodded and some you have to be quiet with. Some players you can’t get on them or they’ll pack it up.

"I never tried to sugar coat it with the players and I think they wanted you to be honest with them. You have to tell them what is truthful and what is not. But when it’s all said and done, to get the most out of the good players they needed someone to be pushing them and that’s how they got into the NHL.”

Just proof that HSJ and the other writers are shut out pretty well. Any assertion that an announcement was coming yesterday was just conjecture, not a leak from inside the org.

Maybe Blashill is weighing his options

Really think it’s a matter of salary and a potential coaching replacement on the PP.

My time frame for ‘very quickly’ certainly extends more than Saturday night to Monday.  Jebus lady, that’s one working day you’re expecting some decision and announcement?

I expect Blashill back.
He’s been a good soldier and we’re treading water at least two more years.  The goal is to maintain a culture during the suck, and the suck will continue.  Blashill just might be the right guy for treading water, and he takes it better than some of the other coaching options out there.

With that said, I hate, hate, hate the idea of having him back because I detest watching my beloved Wings suffer so.

Here’s hoping Seattle is watchable next year.

Think of it this way - having Blashill back for another couple years is our best chance at landing Connor Bedard in 2023…

Wonder what happened to exit interviews for the Wings. Teams that finished up on the weekend have had them either yesterday or today.

I would imagine they’ve already taken place but nobody fed that info to the beat writers so we won’t hear about it unless Steve mentions them. Seems like that would be relevant to whether or not Blash was coming back. If we found out the GM conducted them it would be pretty obvious the bald one was out.

Six years. Six years of losing. Yeah, I know the excuse of lack of talent. I really puke at the thought of him coming back, even for one year, but what do I know. 650 plus line combinations at forward this year. How did that work out offensively for the team? This team is better than last year? Sure. You replaced the sieve Jimmy Howard with Greiss, and even though they got him less than two goals for per game, he still was much better than Howard. Greiss and Bernier were solid in net and were highly responsible for the improvement. Subtract Errorson, Bowey, Daley. Add Lindstrom, Djoos, Stetcher, Merrill, Staal—and the D became more solid. Not great, but better than last year.

I understand the rebuild will take years, and trust Stevie’s judgement, but if he brings back Blash when other options are available, he will have to wonder how many people will refuse to show up and pay for tickets at the area, after the losses from last year. At least a new coach would encourage the fans, give the players a new voice, and most likely sell more tickets.

At the very least, fire the assistant coaches, and work on improvement of the power play and PK,
