Videos- Wrapping Up A Loss In Carolina

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

"They do a good job of being on top of you. They play tight, they get the puck out of their zone quickly and forecheck well," forward Luke Glendening said. "When you try to get the puck out, they'll hound you and their defense is on top of you.

"We were OK in the first and played pretty well getting pucks behind them. They kind of took over the game after that."

Jakub Vrana scored a highlight-reel goal and goaltender Jonathan Bernier made 29 saves for the Wings.

Brady Skjei and Warren Foegele had those second-period Hurricanes goals, and goalie James Reimer stopped 16 shots.

"The first period we moved the puck quick and moved it well, and had poise and wanted the puck," coach Jeff Blashill said. "We were certainly a good hockey team. We ground ourselves out in the second and it carried forward to the third. We didn't play fast and we went backward with it (the puck).

"The whole thing comes down to our puck play."

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

The Detroit Red Wings’ offensive issues are bigger than any one player can solve.

But Jakub Vrana is doing his best.

Vrana scored his sixth goal in seven games with Detroit Thursday, a highlight reel play that turned out to be about the only highlight for the Red Wings in a 3-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena....

It was Vrana’s 17th of the season, including his 11 with the Washington Capitals before the April 12 trade for Anthony Mantha.

“There’s no doubt about it, he can score,” coach Jeff Blashill said. “What we’ll keep working on with him is just making sure he becomes that complete player that can score on a winning hockey team, but he’s got a real ability to score.”

I guess there is a very subtle line there. You truly want your players to be complete players, but cannot kill their creativity and scoring touch. We all like how Zadina is playing a 200 foot game, but did he lose all his scoring ability?

My thoughts exactly. I’m hoping that Zadina and Vrana can each learn something playing together so they become the kind of “complete player” that Yzerman became when Bouman challenged him to be more than just a goal scorer.

Yzerman went from scoring 50-60 goals and a hundred points a year to scoring 25-35 goals and 70-80 points a year. But the team benefited from everything else that he did when he made that change. It’ll be iinteresting to watch Zadina and Vrana (along with Veleno, Berggren and Raymond) develop. I just hope it’s someone like Gallant who guides that development and not “Mr. Process.”

Does this mean so he can score againsti a winning hockey team , i.e. score on?

Or does this mean so he can score as part of a winning hockey team?

I was almost crucified on mlive, when it had comments, for supporting the idea that everyone had to be defensively responsible b/c some ridiculed the idea of a ‘200 foot game’.  But honestly the Wings are so challenged for anyone that can actually score goals other than by accidental deflections that I cringe at the notion that Blashill is going to try to teach him anything.

A goal prevented is a goal scored, like a dollar saved is a dollar earned.  Jebus these guys lack natural goal scorers.
