Nope. He put on his best face.

I am surprised no Yzerman in this media conference.

If true, then he better play his ass off so we can trade him before the December freeze or at the trade deadline before the final quarter of the season ends.

Well, Yzerman is supposed to be able to make these guys feel great about coming to this team despite its current status. So hopefully he can turn that frown upside down. And not poison young Seider’s mind.

Or he can play with DeKeyser all year.

This guy doesn’t even know who Seider is based on his answer to the question at 4:20

So no reporter followed up on his caring about winning comment with a, “Did Yzerman talk to you at all about being in the last year of your contract and the possibility of accommodating your wish list should teams call about your availability on or before trade deadline?” or some variation that Bobby Ryan was very open about.

Being sincere, the way he felt during his press conference is how I felt after hearing the Wings used one of their salary retention transactions and traded away a 2nd round pick. That feeling got worse when I saw 3 names of young d-men on the expansion list (Foote, Dunn, and Bean).

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

Nick Leddy knows he has something to offer the Red Wings, and it’s a valuable asset.

“A veteran presence,” said Leddy, 30, who the Wings acquired Friday from the New York Islanders in exchange for forward Richard Panik, a second-round draft pick in next week’s draft, and retaining half of Panik’s $2.7 million salary ($1.375 million) and salary cap hit.

“It’s a younger team, obviously, and I’ve been fortunate enough to be with some winning cultures. I really want to bring that to the Red Wings. I’m just excited for the opportunity.

“I’m just here to do my best every day and whether it’s teaching younger guys or learning from them. For me, seeing a guy like Noah Dobson (a young Islanders defenseman) last year, so to take a younger guy under my wing is something I’ve tried to do and leading on the ice by example is kind of what I’ve been all about.”

WELL COME ON GUYS!  This is the second time he was punted from a team with a position to win the Cup (Did it in CHI - was *THISCLOSE* to a second this year) so he could not be thrilled.    the 2014 NYI team finished 8th in the Metro division.  He was not exactly thrilled about that one (though it did lead to a significant role for him) and it worked out - but he should have put on a happy face.

I bet a team trades a first rounder for him at the deadline since he has an expiring contract.  Just tell Steve Y not to trade him to the Ranger$  smile

I think this opens up all kinds of opportunities for Detroit AND Leddy for those who are patient. I think it was a good deal for both sides.  The second rounder you traded away will turn into a first rounder soon enough in a deep draft.  You can use that first rounder you get at the deadline and package it with other assets and move up in the draft.  Steve and Lou know what they are doing.

The difference is Leddy was 23-24 back then. But agree with the rest of your post.

I thought Vrana’s presser was worse.

Pretty routine answers to all the questions but it’s rough when you spend 7 years with a team and have relationships with all the players and staff.

At least he doesn’t have to worry about Shavin’ Lou and can grow that beard out now!

With the salary retention on Panik for 2 years (only get 3 per year), a 2nd round pick traded away, and the fact he would have been exposed to Seattle anyways that would be barely breaking even. Could Stevie not had made a side deal for that 2nd rounder only from Francis? If not, cap space is at such a premium—it could have been used better elsewhere.

Also the roster spot itself is an issue. There were at least 3 promising young d-men that were exposed in the expansion draft (Foote, Dunn, and Bean). Leddy’s spot and draft capital would have been better used by the rebuilding Wings for one of those players.

Totally with you on that.

Unless Yzerman flips Leddy fast for a better pick and a solid, up and coming Dmen (as you mentioned).

Steve will be making many more moves before the season starts. Once Leddy gets over the shock of being traded, he may be O.K. smile

Unless the primary goal was to find an experienced left handed partner for Seider

Yep not much joy in that camp, but this won’t be a happy time for the players.  Expansion means a lot of uprooting and juggling of lineups and Nick is a casualty.  I was reading his body language and it is clear he hates Blash already!

I’m going to remain blindly optimistic because at the end of the day i just want to watch the product on the ice and see improvement. My hope is that the Wings will be in the playoff hunt into the last two weeks of the season. I think they have a better shot at that with Leddy than without.  The Wings can’t just draft and project futures, and tank without consequences. They have to win and improve to properly develope.

This trade may indicate Yzerman does not have enough players scouted well enough that he wants to take in the 2nd round. He may also be betting on Leddy fetching draft pick(s) in a better scouted draft.

You may be right.  ‘22 and ‘23 are supposed to have more talented players than this year’s draft (which was nearly agreed upon to be a weak draft, but I like surprises in a “weak” draft).  Wings got a great year in 1989 and I think we’re all hoping that Yzerman’s administration is trying to recapture that lightning in a bottle once again.

Dog. It’s good to be back. Work changes have taken my attention elsewhere. This spat may only be an anomaly.

SYF, I’m only speculating. Seems a safer bet to swap a late 2nd rounder from this year for a late 2nd rounder for next year (or the year after).

Personally, I’m not worried about Seider having a vet to play along or not. The guy really seems “to get” hockey and play beyond his competition so far. It certainly won’t hurt to have Leddy next to him for a while and then turn him loose after Leddy is gone in a trade.
