from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

“He’s still in the evaluation period, so I don’t really have any updates,” coach Jeff Blashill said after Saturday’s morning skate. “With the suspension (Friday), no real rush to make a determination as well.”...

“Ultimately, Dylan will serve his suspension, we’ll take our medicine and move forward. I think Dylan knows you want to keep your emotions in control at that point, but as I watched it yesterday, I totally understand why he didn’t. None of us are perfect. I totally get it, given what he’s been through and the instances that have arisen over the course of the last 8-10 months.”

Blashill was referring to Larkin being cross-checked in the neck by Jamie Benn if Dallas on April 20. Larkin missed the final eight games of the season and spent eight weeks in a hard cervical collar. Benn was not penalized or disciplined by the league.

Robby Fabbri moved to center on the line with Tyler Bertuzzi and Lucas Raymond after Larkin was ejected from Thursday’s game at 11:40 of the second period, and that is where Fabbri will remain tonight.

“Fabbs has played a decent amount of center, started last year at center,” Blashill said. “I think Fabbs has played real good hockey this year (including training camp and preseason), so I think Fabbs is in position to be successful in that spot.”

Carter Rowney will make his Red Wings debut.

“He’s certainly a guy who knows how to play in this league, a guy I wanted to get in the lineup at some point anyway,” Blashill said.

I’m betting half the top 6 is injured by game 10.

I won’t feel normal until there is word on Larkin being able to play again. Its interesting that he could get all his equipment on to practice but then a couple circles on the ice and it’s back to the locker room.

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

So it will be basically two full calendar years between games against each other for the Wings and Canucks.

Certainly a fact like that affects scouting an opponent.

“Generally you try to go back to games against them a year ago, but we don’t have those,” coach Jeff Blashill said after Saturday’s morning skate. “So now it’s two years ago, and they don’t become nearly as relevant for a couple of reasons. One, the way they forecheck now is different from two years ago.

“The players are so different, too. It’s a different animal, and one we understand. It’s been a full season since we played any of these teams, and we’re facing a little bit different preparation, one that’s not harder or easier, just different.”

One positive is, both teams are, obviously, on equal footing.

“We’re both in the same boat,” Blashill said. “Certainly we have a lot of new faces since when they faced us. We’ve changed some things, and they changed some things.”

Benn was not penalized or disciplined by the league.

So two guys injure Larkin with blatantly illegal actions and the league does nothing. As others have noted before, just imagine if the same two things had happened to Crosby or McDavid or Matthews. Something is definitely wrong here.

Instead of SY pointlessly trying to explain and appeal to the league,
let the league express their disappointment and disapproval
to him after the Wings have done the only thing that gets the league’s
and opponents’ attention: fight fire with fire. What’s the harm?
The Wings pick a spot or two higher in the lottery or even have a shot at
the top pick?

Call up Witter

If Smith doesn’t want to drop the gloves or get involved in rough stuff then Wit needs to get called up. Someone needs to police these clowns who keep taking runs at everyone.

Bert was heading straight for joseph before Larks threw the punch and tried intercepting the other guy but Bert doesn’t need to be in the penalty box several times a game

NYR had to address their toughness this offseason, I think it’s about time the Wings do the same

There are games and opponents where
it’s reasonable to dress Givani and Witkowski.
What’s the alternative - Rowney plays 10-12 mins?
Yes he’s versatile and kills penalties. But there are enough
guys on the roster who can do that - play center, PK (Namestikov, Gagne).

Second cheapshot to Larkin’s neck; boarding against Rasmussen;
slewfoot on Erne; low hit on Raymond; slashing and shoving at Seider.
In one game!

It’s not lost on opponents we are dressing two skilled rookies.
I think Givani is willing when he has to opportunity.
What Witter will do is take runs himself, force the issue when deserved and not defer to an opponent who declines.

And that’s the point. Throwing punches isn’t the answer, certainly not when it comes from someone who’s as ineffective at fighting as Smith is. Having someone on the ice that the other team knows will run one of their guys into the boards is the deterrent.

Last night, after Witkowski “Kronwalled” one of the Ice Hogs guys, a lot of the nonsense from them stopped. Smith hasn’t shown he has the ability to do something like that. But let’s see what he does tonight.
