The WJC Games Today

from Adam Kimelman of NHL.com,

On Tap for Day 2
All games on NHL Network in U.S., TSN and RDS in Canada

Sweden vs. Switzerland (2 p.m. ET) -- Sweden coach Tomas Monten said the goaltending, led by Jesper Wallstedt (Minnesota Wild), could be the best he's had in his six tournaments. The 19-year-old led the Swedish Hockey League with a 1.98 goals-against average and was fourth with a .918 save percentage in 22 games for Lulea last season. Sweden also has a deep group of forwards that could be led by Jonathan Lekkerimaki (Vancouver Canucks), who helped Sweden win the 2022 IIHF Under-18 World Championship with a tournament-best 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) in six games. Forward Simon Knak (Nashville Predators) and defenseman Brian Zanetti (Philadelphia Flyers) will be relied upon to help Switzerland improve on its ninth-place finish from the 2021 WJC.

Latvia vs. Canada (6 p.m. ET)

You are a saint!

I just turned it on in time to see Edvinsson completely kill a play.  Singlehandedly killed the play.

Niederbach gave a vicious hit into the boards.  They said it’s his 3rd penalty today.  Looking at his stats, in 52 games last year he only had 12 PIM!

The WJC review process is…interesting.  They are doing the video review in the same booth Niederbach is serving his penalty, so he’s watching the review, in the penalty box, while they watch the video…in the same box.  Interesting…

Latvia’s first goal I feel like Cossa had no chance. Screened by a defender, top corner.

I didn’t see the 2 Latvia goals but I did see the stats,.. 2 goals on 24 shots, not that good when the other team Canada has double the shots. Cossa has a lot of “kid” mistakes that hopefully he can improve on in Grand Rapids.

Hard to judge a goalie in a game like this. I wasn’t expecting much of a test for Cossa with Latvia. The first goal he allowed was a fabulous shot, would have beat many an NHL goaltender.

Cossa looked pretty sound overall while facing limited quality scoring chances. The biggest weakness I noted was his play with the puck outside the crease. I appears he needs some work there although I imagine playing with a bunch of players you haven’t played with before makes this a little difficult.

We’ll get a better feel for Cossa as the tournament moves forward. He’s not expect to start their next game but I’m hoping he’s the one the turn to most often as it enters the second week.

What concerns me is they chose to go with Cossa against the weakest opponent.  Canada is notorious for a goalie merry-go-round, so it’ll likely be 2+ games until he gets another chance, unless one of the other goalies displaces him on the depth chart.

Evil, absolutely agree about the first goal he let in though - that was an amazing shot.
