The Latest On The Wings

from Kevin Allen of Dtroit Hockey Now,

- Reports have linked the Red Wings to possibly moving Tyler Bertuzzi, but a source with knowledge of the situation said it’s “not happening.” Anybody can be traded for the right offer, but the source said the Bertuzzi rumors were media speculation gone awry. The Red Wings never had any intention of moving Bertuzzi.

- A trade freeze starts at 3 p.m. Saturday and continues until 1 p.m. Thursday, the day before the start of the NHL draft. The lifting of the trade ban could be like the starter’s gun for the Red Wings. Several teams are looking to clear cap space, and some of those deals could come before the draft.

Depending upon what happens in the Staal negotiation and expansion draft, the Red Wings could be looking for two or three veteran defensemen. One of them could come in a trade that includes the Red Wings receiving an asset for taking the player, similar to what the Red Wings did with Staal last season.

The free agent signing period starts on July 28, and the Red Wings aren’t expected to make a major splash.

If Yzerman likes spunk and effort in his players, who wouldn’t, I can’t see him trading Bertuzzi.  For the right price anything can happen, but with his injuries I don’t know how many teams would be willing to offer that right price.

It would have to be as part of a deal to land a really
impactful player, probably younger, at a very in-demand position:
a center; a top-four left D…and they should have some of Berts makeup as a player, too.

In other words, no, unless you are blown away and the deal helps solve a major challenge we’re not solving in the draft.

Really hope approach of taking things very slow will help.
I know Bert had some head or neck issues when younger and had to
change his game - get rid of some of the needless fights and high-danger plays.
Since then he’s seemingly found a happy median. I hope with this injury it’s a case of a long careful rehab and building up his body to help avoid more of the same.
I think we’d all like to see this team winning with Larkin and Bert.

It all depends on the medical evals as ‘lil Bert could be deemed high probability for re-injury or shortened career likely due to injury or completely cleared (unlikely due to back/neck area)...

Other teams may well be put off by his injury….but it only takes one to pay that trade price.

What everyone seems to be ignoring is the talent level coming in at LW & RW that will force ‘lil Bert down the lines (Vrána, Zadina, Raymond, Berggren, and maybe Rasmussen if he doesn’t stick at centre)

Is ‘lil Bert going to be a 3rd liner on the Wings because of those pieces (bottom 6 guys can be replaced fairly easily) and if the other team is paying a trade price for him as a borderline top line winger….than you make the trade.

It’s not about not liking the player or finding him valuable: it’s about where you are, what is coming up in the organization, and how do you replace what you are losing—-not the name, but the actual production.

No sense in even considering offers for him now; with his injury, there is uncertainty as to what his current level of play is compared to before. Best case scenario would be for him to get stronger over the summer, come back at full strength in October, and show that he is basically the same gritty package as before his injury, Several teams were rumored to have been in the mix for showing interest. Let a bidding war show up for his services at the trade deadline, and pray that he stays healthy. He is exactly what a team like Toronto has lacked in the playoffs to get out of round 1.
