Possible UFA Targets For The Wings

from Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

The Red Wings won’t do a deep dive into free agents. It is too soon. But Steve Yzerman knows his team needs to be more competitive than they were last season

But here some potential unrestricted free agent forwards the Red Wings could look at:

Center Vince Trocheck, Carolina Hurricanes

He has Michigan roots. Born in Pittsburgh, moved to Detroit when he was 13. Played in the Little Caesars program. His Ontario Hockey League career was spent in Saginaw and Plymouth. Most importantly, he registered 51 points this season. He has scored 20 or more goals four times. Trocheck also registered 185 hits this season. Would be a significant upgrade over Pius Suter at No. 2 center. Trocheck offers grit and fire. Very good on faceoffs. He has been at 54.4% for Carolina over the past three seasons. Quality defensive player. Hard to play against. The negative is he turns 29 this summer.

Center or wing Andrew Copp, New York Rangers

Grew up in Ann Arbor. Played quarterback for Ann Arbor Skyline.

Trocheck just feels like another Nielsen or worse still Weiss to me.

Why do we need a 2C? as of July last year we were assured the 2C spot was locked up by Suter.

Also not sure why the “michigan” thing is in such favor now when just a few years ago it was seen as a bias to the team’s detriment.

If it feels like the team is turning the corner,
that and the return of a local legend and ace GM
could make also coming back to Detroit appealing to some guys
with roots in the area.

So many other variables, though.
Like, if you were Copp and the Rangers could pay you fairly,
would you like want to leave a team in the playoffs now that’s likely
to stay there for years? The big city is alluring to some and not appealing
to others.

Suter was an improvement. It’s just that standards have to keep
going up if players are ever going to be slotted as they would
on a contender. Suter is still a useful top-nine player but
an upgrade especially at center is still in order.

No room for suter on roster.  Need to trade him for an over-priced 2C until a draft pick is ready. Need to do same with Hronek. His O is not worth bad D and seider and Edvinsson can fill PP gap.

Do you realize this is Suters first full season? If Steve picks up a better 2C, then Suter drops to the 3rd. Other than Larkin, we don’t have a better Center to take his spot.

We really need a number 1C.  That’s the problem.  I love Larkin but he’s just a 2 playing as a 1.

I am with you Chiller, i think Suter had a very good season for only his second. I think he was able to change his game from last year’s, where got to play with two top tiered players to playing with less talent. He has the knack of being at the right place at the right time. Many times he was covering or attempting to cover for his linemates.
