Nick Leddy Will Help

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Yzerman is trying to balance stoking the rebuild with improving the current team, and Leddy checks that latter box because of his experience and his offensive instincts. He's in the last year of a contract with a $5.5 million salary cap hit, and with 121 playoff games to his credit, he's likely to attract offers at next season’s trade deadline — so he could also ultimately benefit the future.

As it stands now, the Wings’ top-four defense corp next season shapes up to be Seider, Leddy, Filip Hronek and Danny DeKeyser. The Wings made DeKeyser available in the expansion draft, but the Seattle Kraken will be eyeing either Troy Stecher, a 27-year-old right-shot with a $1.7 million salary cap hit, or Dennis Cholowski, a 23-year-old former first-round pick whose development has disappointed.

In addition to the phone call from Yzerman — “it was all positive things,” Leddy said —Wings captain Dylan Larkin texted to welcome Leddy, as did Frans Nielsen and Thomas Greiss, his former teammates with the Islanders. The messages were similar: “Nothing but great things about the organization,” Leddy said.

Leddy will definitely be helpful on the power play and most other aspects of the offensive.  I hope Blash treats him like Cholowski when he blunders in his own end.

Leddy’s ability to enter the O zone and captain the power play should be big. I am excited to see that.

So does picking up Leddy mean Yzerman is looking for a forward in the draft or the best player available?

I can’t imagine one year of Leddy means a single thing for Yzerman’s draft.

I don’t think its a signal for the draft, free agency however, different story, still hoping for a salary cap minded trade and Tampa seems to be the best partner, its 50/50 to me on Seattle taking Gourde vs. Foote, either way, they still have some cap to trim, if Foote that’s a positive for the Wings.

Ya, to be honest, there are some really intriguing names too.  I wonder how much Yzerman might try to entice Seattle to take someone and trade them to us.  Problem is that anyone that would be enticing to us would be to them, so not sure we have anything they’d want to get that.
I’m thinking guys like Foote, Hayden Fleury, etc…some of the younger guys exposed.
