How The Wings Were Built

from Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now,

Tyler Bertuzzi is among a growing minority on the roster of the Detroit Red Wings. He was here prior to Steve Yzerman taking over as GM of the Red Wings – and he’s still here.

Threre’s not many of them left. Bertuzzi is one of just eight holders from the pre-Yzerman era on Detroit’s current NHL roster that is off to a 2-0-1 start to the 2021-22 season.

“Obviously it’s been a tough couple of years but that happens sometimes in sports,” Bertuzzi assessed of the team’s rebuild. “We have a lot of young guys coming in right now that are earning jobs and playing big roles that will help in the long run.

“Just the chemistry and getting everyone together, building from the core and out. It feels good to get off to this start. We just gotta keep it going.”

Let’s look at how rapidly Yzerman has reshaped this Red Wings team during his 2+ seasons in charge.

“Filip Hronek, D. Selected 53rd overall in the 2106 NHL entry draft. Hronek and Paul Coffey are only D to lead Red Wings in scoring.”

These are not the same thing

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

First and foremost, it’s way early. The NHL season is only three games old for the Red Wings, but the reaction on social media, of fans who have been disheartened by the losing the last several years, is a reaction of positivity and a strong sense of hope.

But it is only three games, and the Wings have actually had some positive starts these last several years.

As recently as the 2019-20 season, the Wings began 3-1-0 — only to finish with a 17-49-5 record and a woeful .275 points percentage when the pandemic ended that season.

They started 4-1-0 in 2017-18 and 6-2-0 in 2016-17 — and missed the playoffs both those seasons.

“Marc Staal, D. Acquired from the New York Rangers on September 26, 2020 for a 2021 second-round draft pick.”

I believe Staal was not acquired for a second. We got a second and took on his contract for future considerations. And we used that second to trade up in 2021 and grab Cossa…

Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977.  No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y.  Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation.  There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature.  Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that.
