Who is Wyatt Newpower? CapFriendly says the Red Wings signed him to a two year deal. Right handed shot, 6-3 defensemen.

Good question Jdunc.  I saw it too but no news otherwise.

There is a Twitter account with his name, just joined in May but who knows if it is really him.

Ah, now I remember.  I posted this in the comments in A2Y on 5/31.

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings today signed defenseman Wyatt Newpower to a two-year entry-level contract.

Newpower, 23, skated in 24 games as a first-year pro with the American Hockey League’s Cleveland Monsters in 2020-21, producing 10 points (3-7-10) to tie for 10th on the team in scoring, along with 14 penalty minutes and a team-leading plus-10 rating. The 6-foot-3, 194-pound blueliner made his professional debut on Feb. 12 vs. Rochester, picked up his first two AHL points with a pair of assists on Feb. 22 at Rockford and tallied his first professional goal on March 20 vs. Grand Rapids. Prior to signing a one-year AHL contract with Cleveland on April 6, 2020, Newpower concluded a four-year career at the University of Connecticut in 2019-20, pacing the team with a plus-23 rating and leading the school’s defensemen with a collegiate career-best 22 points (3-19-22) in 34 games as captain of the Huskies. He tied for fifth on Connecticut in scoring and for sixth among all Hockey East defensemen.

A native of Hugo, Minn., Newpower totaled 47 points (11-36-47) and 68 penalty minutes in 114 games at Connecticut from 2016-20, capping off his career with the Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman Award, as well as a spot on the Hockey East Second All-Star Team. Newpower also led his school’s defensemen in points as a junior in 2018-19, notching 14 points (3-11-14) in 34 games. Prior to his collegiate career, Newpower skated four seasons at White Bear Lake High School in Minnesota, logging 73 points (19-54-73) and 81 penalty minutes in 101 games from 2012-16, where he was a two-time Defenseman of the Year Award winner.

RHD Newpower apparently replaces LHD Lashoff.  He will shore up the Griffins defense and just maybe he’ll be a surprise signing.

Man, I really miss steady defense-first defensemen like Fetisov, Ward, Rouse, and Macoun.

Will tomorrow’s drawing for lottery positions in the 2021 NHL draft be broadcast?  If so, what channel with carry it?  Thanks.

Thanks for the link! I think the Wings would miss the picks more than Janmark/Jarnkrok, as the Wings would still be terrible with them (and they would have been traded at some point anyway, but with more value).

Then again, who knows what two-bit player Holland’s staff would have chosen…

Also, what we expected all along:

When the Legwand move was made, a team source allowed that the call to get another center came from above Holland’s pay grade. The GM was told in no uncertain terms to ensure that Detroit’s playoff streak wouldn’t end.
