Bottom Line Makes Sense

from Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

The Red Wings like Hyman because he’s among the best at digging out pucks to create scoring chances. Hyman scored 15 goals in 43 games last season. He also has ties with Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin. They played together one season at the University of Michigan.

Hyman, 29, would like to stay with the Maple Leafs, and would take less to stay with them. But the Maple Leafs are salary cap challenged and  might have difficulty fitting any kind of Hyman raise into their budget.

The Red Wings have ample cap space, but are a long way from being a contender. That makes it difficult to recruit top players. Until the Red Wings show they are competitive, top free agents are going to stay away from Detroit.

Long term deal at 6 mil pet year to a 29 year old role player? No, thank you.

The only way I see this working is if it’s big money for very short term and he fills a gap for one or two seasons tops and we flip him to a contender(like Toronto) with salary retained. Wouldn’t be surprised to see some creative deals happening in this flat cap covid area. Are we going to see any players signed and immediately traded with salary retained? Wouldnt put it past a few of em.

Per Dom Luszczyszyn’s article in the Athletic,Top 50 NHL UFAs….

Projected contract: $5.8 million x 4.5 years
GSVA timeline:
2022=2.0 Top line,
2023=2.0 Top line,
2024 = 1.7 Top Six,
2025 = 1.1 Top Six,
2026 = 0.8 Top Six,
2027 = 0.2 Bottom line

with the contract changing to a higher probability of being a bust in year 5. So you want to negotiate a 4 year deal if you believe this model.

I don’t think it’s going to happen for all the reasons everyone already knows, but I’d be thrilled to get him. He seems like a right handed Bertuzzi.

I want a Nikita Gusev.  He’s buy-low right now and given the ice time can be an offensive threat.

Bring back Tatar while we’re at it.

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

It makes the most sense for general manager Steve Yzerman to go with the 7-3-1 format. Here is a look at how the Wings’ rebuild is best served:

Forwards
Protect Dylan Larkin, Tyler Bertuzzi, Jakub Vrana, Robby Fabbri, Adam Erne, Michael Rasmussen and Givani Smith. That does leave Vladislav Namestnikov exposed, but he had a disappointing season, with 17 points in 53 games. Smith didn’t play much (16 games) but he’s a gritty, physical forward who is willing to drop the gloves, and that’s a dimension the Wings lack.

Defensemen
Protect Filip Hronek, Gustav Lindstrom and Dennis Cholowski. That would leave Troy Stecher exposed, and he would be the obvious choice for the Kraken. Stecher, 27, would help the Wings more in the present, but Lindstrom, 22, and Cholowski, 23, figure to have more impact long term. Cholowski has yet to live up to being a first-round pick (No. 20, 2016) but he’s an NHL-caliber skater and passer. It takes some players longer than others to figure out how hard they have to work every game to make it in the NHL.

Tatar? Tatar that was scratched in the playoffs for like half the games?  No thanks.
Hyman as well, unless it’s a short term deal, not sure how he makes sense given what it will cost.
Gusev sounds interesting like htat idea.

Jeff Marek thinks Hyman is in line for a 6x6 or maybe even 7 year deal…That’s gonna be a hard no from me dawg.

Hyman at 6x6 is a hard no for the entire leauge. Whoever pays that would need to be fired. The most he would get at 29 would be 5 on a 3 year deal. 4 max on a 6 year deal.

Have you met the GMs of the NHL?  There’s a reason they have a self imposed spending limit.
