Any Interest In Andrew Copp?

from Luke Fox of Sportsnet,

Here’s a rundown and ranking of hockey’s best impending unrestricted free agents, plus the latest buzz circulating about their future as most of the league has already shifted to off-season mode.

Andrew Copp

Age on July 13: 27
Position: Centre / Wing
2021-22 salary cap hit: $3.64 million

The latest: Controlling his fate in Winnipeg and opting not to sign long-term, the steadily improving Copp was a sensible trade target for the New York Rangers.

Their hand forced, the Jets moved Copp plus a sixth-rounder to the Big Apple in return for Morgan Barron, two conditional second-round picks and a fifth-round pick in 2023.

One of those seconds improved to a first-rounder once Copp and the Blueshirts reached the Eastern Conference Final.

Bruising and productive, Copp only elevated his game even further since the deal. The versatile two-way forward has cracked the 20-goal and 30-assist marks for the first time in his career. He proved even more valuable in the playoffs, skating more than 20 minutes a night, scoring big goals, and contributing to special teams....

His new AAV should come in around $4.5 million.

Is it as simple as GM Chris Drury making a choice between Strome and Copp? Affording both is unlikely.

Watched every Ranger game in the playoffs. This guy was basically invisible on the ice. I hope Steve does not go after him. The pickings for players will be better and in greater number this summer. Pass.

Get em. He’s a better version of Pius Sutter. Wouldn’t go above 4 though. We’ll see if he’ll take a hometown discount.

Ha.  I don’t envy Sakic’s position.  He has so many valuable pieces he needs to sign or re-sign and the biggest one is re-signing Nate MacKinnon.

Good luck, Joe.

Hell and yes.  Copp’s been a fantasy contributor all last season, he provides stats across board, goals, assists, +/-, faceoffs, shots on goal, and while unsustainable he had a 25% shooting percentage with the rangers.

As 2Cs go, I’d be happy with Copp or Trochek, as long as the term was short (4 or fewer). I’d also be happy with no FA signing and see what a new coaching staff can do with what we have (and will have with the youths coming in). Incrementally better this coming season is fine. Patience, trust the Yzerplan, etc.

Absolutely agree. And it’s also concerning that Copp best statistical year came on a contract year.
In a vacuum, of course, he is OK, but I am pretty sure he will be singed by somebody for 5+ years and 5+ millions.

His team is in the SC finals, I think he is OK despite some decisions to make in the summer.

He’s mostly a 3rd liner who got a stat bump from playing with Panarin.

He’s coming off his best season statistically and made 3.6m. This is his best chance to cash in and he will definitely be asking for a raise.

I wouldn’t go more than 2 years at a 3-3.5 cap hit. Someone will offer 4-5 at around 5m. Once Gaudreau and Forsberg are off the board teams will get desperate

Copp is basically a third-liner and Detroit is not in need of a third line centre. They need someone who is *definitely* a top six centre, not someone who is performing like a top-six centre for the first time in his UFA year.

Is he a top 3 dman or a 1st line Center? No and No and my answer is no. 22/23 season after not making the playoffs is not the time to commit dollars to depth.

I’m still going with my prediction that Yzerman lands Jakob Chychrun in a blockbuster trade, and signs nothing more than 1 year stops gaps, 2nd chance’eske contracts after that, letting our prospects play.  Maybe he helps someone out like Tampa and takes Kilhorn for a 2nd rounder or something as well.

I find it hard to believe Copp can’t either get an
even bigger payday than is suggested in the article,
or get at least that much in NYC.

It’s entirely possible he’s just really hitting his stride (was kinda
buried in Winnipeg for a while) and with consistent top-six mins
could be an effective two-way second line center for a few years.

I just don’t see him “returning” to Detroit at a bargain price at
this stage of the rebuild. His stock is really high right now.
Someone is going to offer money, or a chance to win, or both.

Given Gary Buttman’s announcement of league revenues and projections of the salary cap vs accrued debt being 2 to 3 years to payoff, I think we might see short 2-3 year contracts of some of these UFA. They know that after that time frame the cap will open and they might come out ahead vs accepting a 4 or 5 year deal now. If that is the case, then I have no problem signing any second line centre now.

Waiting on a top 3 d-man or a #1 centre to actually make it to UFA is dubious at best. Just look at this year’s UFA top targets to begin the season:

1)  Aleksander Barkov, 26, signed 8 yr x $80M extension on Oct. 8, 2021
2) Mika Zibanejad, 29, signed 8 yr x $68M extension on Oct. 10, 2021
3) Johnny Gaudreau, 28,
4) Evgeni Malkin, 35,
5) Patrice Bergeron, 36,
6) Morgan Rielly, 28, signed 8 yr x $60M extension on Oct. 29, 2021
7) John Klingberg, 29,
8) Filip Forsberg, 27,
9) Tomas Hertl, 28, signed 8 yr x $65.1M extension on Mar. 16, 2022.
10) Kris Letang, 35,

Klingberg reaching UFA was aided by the problems the Stars have been having with Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn after they were signed to 8 year deals.

Even when they make it to UFA, the fit isn’t necessarily right anyways as the Wings don’t need another top 3 RHD. And most importantly, Detroit isn’t in a position to be thumbing their nose at any potential UFA that is considering signing with them.

Copp’s ceiling is 2nd line centre and his floor is 3rd line winger. Sounds like a talent upgrade to me: start packaging Zadina and a few others to get that missing piece.
