Rafalski didn’t stay long. Update below.
Update from the Joe via the Anti-Digger,
On the ice for Thursday’s practice at Joe Louis Arena (an unusual 3 p.m.) are Chris Chelios, Niklas Kronwall and Brian Rafalski. So is newcomer Brad Stuart, meaning nine defensemen (no Nicklas Lidstrom) are at practice.
Stuart led the Red Wings’ stretching exercises (one player does each practice) to hoots and hollers from his new teammates.

Niyo: Atlanta Asking Price Too High

Junior Deep Digger John Niyo blogs this afternoon that Don Waddell’s asking price for Marian Hossa was steep to say the least, as far as Tick Tock Kenny was concerned.
And for what it’s worth, from what I’ve heard ... Waddell’s asking price included both Filppula and Ericsson, in addition to a top prospect (Smith?) and a first-round pick.
All that, and—by all accounts—no guarantee that Hossa would be anything but a rental. Once the Detroit sports radio idiots (and columnists) can figure out who Brendan Smith is, we’ll see if they change their tune.

Duhatschek: Hart For Nick If (When) Wings Right Ship

Via the Globe and Mail,
Malkin’s main challenger could be the Red Wings’ Nicklas Lidstrom though, mostly because of how Detroit has faltered in recent weeks with Lidstrom out of the line-up. If the Red Wings do finish as the best team in the NHL and they right the ship when Lidstrom finally returns, voters will be hard-pressed to ignore his contributions – and the vast difference between Detroit’s record with and without him in the line-up.

Diggers Converge On Meech

Forty hours after he registered 8 shots on goal against Edmonton, in the midst of the best game a defenseman (other than Lidstrom) has had for the Wings this year, Derek Meech is now a popular fella with the Diggers.

It’s been nearly two years since we took a hard look at the A2Y Glossary. I plan on doing that this weekend. But before I do, I’m soliciting your input. Read it over. If you think there are entries that need to go, or have suggestions for phrases we haven’t placed in there yet…place your ideas in the comment section here.
I’ll (a) ignore them or (2) take full credit for their creation.

Memo to Drew Sharp: It’s Not Just Us
by IwoCPO on 02/27/08 at 03:24 PM ET

So Drew Sharp, based on zero hockey knowledge and his access to a keyboard, blasted Kenny Holland today. Sharp said he lacked the courage to make a deadline move. Sharp said, “that’s it?” regarding the Stuart trade. Sharp claims Holland should have harkened back to the days of unlimited money and mindless spending.
Sharp, as we know, is a tool.
Read on.

Couple stories to point you to this morning. First, Jiri Fischer will be returning to the ice in an exhibition in Saginaw this Saturday.
On Saturday, the hockey champion will make his first public appearance on the ice since his heart stopped beating. He will raise money to bring devices like the one that revived him to rinks, schools and nonprofit agencies across mid-Michigan.
Fischer will join doctors and paramedics in a 5 p.m. charity hockey game at TheDow Event Center’s Wendler Arena, 303 Johnson, Saginaw.

The Day After

Updated below with feedback on Derek Meech’s play last night.
Jiri Hudler was so excited that the Wings kept him in Detroit that he went out and sucked worse than he has all year. Like invisibly sucked. Four shifts in the second. Four more in the third. None in OT and a shootout attempt he could have kicked from the bench with more chance of success.
If not for The Lilja Situation, Hudler could easily be considered a goat today. But far be it from us to take any of the spotlight away from Lilja. Trouble in his own end? Say it isn’t so. My memory is foggy, of course, but I’m sure that’s the first time we’ve seen anything similar to that.

Tick Tock Kenny Stands Pat…Until 1518: Stuart To Wings

Unless one of those hinky deals that always seem to follow the deadline’s final minute come through in the next half hour, it would appear that the organ-I-zation is placing all their bets, all their cap space, all their hopes on an injury depleted team that’s won once in the last ten games.
As bleak as that sounds, it’s completely understandable should the health issues work themselves out in time to get some momentum for the playoffs.
But…if the worst happens in April, there will be questions.
That’s what I had written when I heard this: Brad Stuart to the Wings for a 2 and a 4.

Updated 1315: Fedorov to Caps for a prospect.
If Tick Tock Kenny’s going to make a move, James Mirtle has provided a list of who’s left.
Marian Hossa, Olli Jokinen,
Adam Foote
, Jeff Carter, John-Michael Liles,
Sergei Fedorov
, Tom Preissing, Brad Stuart, Ladislav Nagy, Ron Hainsey, Michael Ryder, Miroslav Satan, Bobby Holik, David Vyborny, Mike Peca, Ruslan Fedotenko, Chris Gratton, Marek Malik, Rhett Warrener
Those are just the UFA’s provided by James. This name is one I’m still watching: Nik Antropov.

About Abel to Yzerman
Welcome to Abel to Yzerman, a Red Wing blog since 1977. No other site on the internet has better-researched, fact-laden and better prepared discussions than A2Y. Re-phrase: we do little research, find facts and stats highly overrated and claim little to no preparation. There are 19 readers of A2Y. No more, no less. All of them, except maybe one, are juvenile in nature. Reminding them of that in the comment section will only encourage them to prove that. Your suggestions and critiques are welcome: wphoulihan@gmail.com
