The Slumping Anthony Mantha

12/07/2022 at 10:50am EST

from Sammi Silber of Washington Hockey Now,

After a significant shoulder injury and subsequent surgery interrupted his first full year as a member of the Capitals last season, he came into this season 100 percent healthy and ready to make an impact, something the team needed with top-6 forwards Nicklas Backstrom, Tom Wilson and Connor Brown all hitting the injured list. However, the year’s been inconsistent at best, as he has just six goals and six assists through all 27 games this season.

The Capitals don’t think they’ve seen the best of Mantha yet. And going forward, the team expects more from the 28-year-old, who came over at the 2021 NHL Trade Deadline from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Jakub Vrana and high picks.

“He should be a big part of our offense,” general manager Brian MacLellan said.

Mantha has just one goal in his last 11 games. And though he has gotten some good looks on the third line with Lars Eller and Marcus Johansson, he hasn’t been able to capitalize on some of those high-danger chances.

We Remember

12/07/2022 at 9:28am EST

via nps.gov,

Each year on Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor Survivors, veterans, and visitors from all over the world come together to honor and remember the 2,403 service members and civilians who were killed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. A further 1,178 people were injured in the attack, which permanently sank two U.S. Navy battleships (the USS Arizona and the USS Utah) and destroyed 188 aircraft.

On Aug. 23, 1994, the United States Congress designated Dec. 7 as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Every year, remembrance events are held at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, culminating in a commemoration ceremony on Dec. 7. To see photos of these events, please go to our Flickr page. Videos- Wrapping Up A Win In Tampa

12/07/2022 at 7:47am EST

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

"Good feeling," said Lalonde of the victory. "I just liked the we played. We were on our heels in the third (period), but we put ourselves in that position with two real good periods. It looked like a lot of our games of late, we didn't give up a ton.

"And Ville was the difference in the third."

Tampa pushed with the game on the line, but Husso made several key stops and saved his best work for the final 20 minutes. Tampa twice cut the Wings' lead to one goal by pulling Andrei Vasilevskiy for an extra attacker and scoring both its goals that way.

Husso turned in what is becoming a typical performance, with 44 saves including 28 with Tampa pressing in the third period.

"You know what's going on but at that point I wasn't thinking about shutout or anything, just get the win," Husso said. "They have high skill, high end players. They got two goals tonight, which you have a chance to win the game."

NHL Short Notes

12/07/2022 at 7:11am EST

* In a head-to-head battle broadcast nationally on ESPN+, it was Mitchell Marner’s point streak that outlasted Jason Robertson as the Maple Leafs forward became the fourth active player to record a run of 20-plus games.

* It was four first-period goals for the Kings, who have the second-most tallies in the opening frame among all teams, and a season-high seven-goal outburst from the Blues that allowed each club to skate off victorious.

* The Devils blanked the Blackhawks at Prudential Center and became the third team in NHL history to post 10-plus wins both at home and on the road in 26 or fewer games.

Quick Recap- Detroit Red Wings/Tampa Bay Lightning

12/06/2022 at 9:36pm EST

In this man's humble opinion, I felt the first 40 minutes were the best of the season for the Wings.

No scoring in the first period, Detroit with the only goal in the second and in the third period the Wings scored early to make it 2-0.

With over 5 minutes to play in the third, Tampa pulled their goalie and quickly scored to make it 2-1. Then with just under 4 minutes to play, the Lightning again pulled their goalie but this time, Detroit scored.

Tampa again pulled their goalie down 3-1 and promptly scored. Again the Tampa net was empty with under a minute to play thus allowing the Wings to hit the empty net which they did. Final Detroit 4 Tampa Bay 2.

Under Pressure

12/06/2022 at 6:30pm EST

Hello and welcome to all. The Wings are coming into Tampa Bay after posting a win the other night against a team that hasn’t had the best of luck this season. That being said, they did have goals from four different players, and that should bode well for the team as a whole. Czarnik, Kubalik, Cool Hand, and Copp all scored. Copp is looking better and better each game, and Kubalik scored his team leading 10th goal.

Suffice it to say that the Wings haven’t fared very well against the Bolts lately,(well, they did win on 4/19/22) and this is the first meeting between the two teams this season. This is a homecoming of sorts for Coach Derek Lalonde, and here’s hoping he has some inside knowledge on how to beat his former team at their own game. The Wings will be under pressure tonight, so all the best to our newly minted Coach, his staff, and the Team.

It’s the Wings vs the Lightning. The puck is set to drop around 7:00 PM, and will be broadcast on Bally Sports Detroit and the Red Wings Radio Network (97.1 The Ticket in Detroit). Also available on NHLPP/ESPN+, BSSUNX, SNE, SNW, and SNP.

Paul Maurice Returns To Winnipeg Tonight

12/06/2022 at 9:46am EST

from George Richards of Florida Hockey Now,

“It’s still home for some of my family and a special place,” Maurice said before the Panthers took off on their five-game road trip which ends at the arena on Portage Avenue.

“It’s a really good team, a tremendously well-run organization and a special market because it needs the fans to survive. It’s not a big building, it’s not a big market. So that connection there between the fans and the players is unique. And special.

“It will always be a special place. They understand the loss (of the team to Arizona) so the connection they have is unusual and important. That franchise is a great model in the league for smaller and maybe unique markets.”

Marty Pavelich Gives Back To The Game

12/06/2022 at 9:06am EST

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Marty Pavelich skis a hundred times a year at age 95 and aims to continue doing it when he hits 100.

Skiing is his passion. Hockey is his claim to fame. Pavelich played on the Detroit Red Wings’ four Stanley Cup championship teams in the 1950s.

He moved to Big Sky, Montana in 1993 and was instrumental in getting that town of 3,000 residents its first hockey rink. It will be named the Marty Pavelich Ice Rink during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday.

“I’ve been here 30-some years in the northern part of our country and no hockey. I said this is ridiculous,” Pavelich said. “I called the local sportswriter, took him to lunch and said how about writing something about hockey? He started writing about hockey and now we got two enclosed rinks in Bozeman and over 1,000 kids playing hockey and the same thing happened here. I thought we got to give these kids an opportunity.”

Stiff Competition Every Other Night

12/06/2022 at 8:32am EST

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

This week will be revealing for the Detroit Red Wings.

They’ve achieved a winning record on the strength of beating teams that don’t project to make the playoffs, but now come a trio of elites, one after the one: The Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday, Florida Panthers on Thursday, and Dallas Stars on Saturday.

Recent tests — at home against the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights — ended with losses. To their credit the Wings stayed with their structure and competed both nights, but the bottom line is they have measured up short against the teams they want to be among....

onday was a day off, common practice after playing back-to-back. The trip at least began on a winning note, as the Wings used their power play and Ville Husso’s goaltending to defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets, at team hovering in the lower third of the standings. The Wings are 12-7-5 with a .604 winning percentage, clinging to fourth place in the Atlantic Division just one point ahead of the Panthers.

The Wings are 3-4-1 against teams that made the playoffs last season, earning victories against the New York Rangers, Minnesota Wild and Nashville Predators, and losing to the Rangers, Leafs, Los Angeles Kings (regulation and overtime) and Boston Bruins.

Quite The Comeback For The Vancouver Canucks

12/06/2022 at 3:56am EST

from Iain MacIntyre of Sportsnet,

Two weeks into his Calder Trophy season four years ago, Elias Pettersson was thrown violently to the ice in Florida by defenceman Mike Matheson, who had been embarrassed by the rookie Vancouver Canuck earlier in the shift.

Pettersson got a concussion, Matheson a two-game suspension and the incident set off an inferno of debate about the culture of both the Canucks and the National Hockey League.

But even then, as a 19-year-old with the physique of a 2-iron, Pettersson was tougher than he seemed. Tougher mentally and physically. Four years later for Pettersson and two teams later for Matheson, the Canucks’ elite two-way centre victimized the Montreal Canadiens’ defenceman in overtime to give Vancouver an inexplicable 7-6 victory in front of fans who have rarely been so entertained.

* The Golden Knights held off a Bruins comeback attempt to earn a win in their 400th game and became the first team to capture a victory at TD Garden since April 16 (regular season & playoffs).

* Mitchell Marner and Jason Robertson are set to put their 19- and 18-game point streaks on the line when the Maple Leafs and Stars face off at American Airlines Center.

Derek Lalonde's Team

12/05/2022 at 3:50pm EST

from Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

When Derek Lalonde started coaching the Detroit Red Wings, players quickly realized that he brought some of the Tampa Bay Lightning success with him.

“When we went into training camp and saw clips of what we were going to be doing and how we were going to be playing, there was a lot of seeing Tampa do it,” Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin said. “I think it is easy to get behind because it’s had success, it’s proven in what they do.

Lalonde was a Tampa Bay assistant coach for both of their recent Stanley Cup championships. Lalonde hasn’t transformed the Red Wings into the Tampa Bay Lightning. But we will see how the two teams compare Tuesday when they meet in Tampa. Lalonde has changed the team’s approach to playing the game. They are playing a simpler defensive style, paying more attention to preventing high danger scoring chances. The Red Wings were last in the NHL in that statistic last season, and today they rank 11th.

The Red Wings rank eighth with an average of 15.68 blocked shots per 60 minutes, and they are 14th in hitting. Even though Lalonde isn’t happy with the team’s consistency 5-on-5, the Red Wings’ scoring average of 3.17 goals-per-game ranks 15h.

Lalonde has even pushed hard on Larkin to be better in the defensive zone.

“Yeah there’s been some uncomfortable moments in video,” Larkin said. “That’s part of being a leader and part of being a top player. It’s meaningful when you’re in there and getting called out, because we’re all in this together and we all have to defend together and get better together. There has been some uncomfortable clips but I think it helps the group, it helps me.”

Four Troubling Teams

12/05/2022 at 3:09pm EST

from Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic,

The point being: We are far enough along in the season that if a team isn’t performing, management will be getting a little antsy.

Let’s take a look at four teams looking for answers right now....

New York Rangers

I could be wrong, but I see the course correction coming organically here. I don’t think Drury has to do anything drastic at this time. This team will turn around. I know that’s a boring take, but this is an example of a team where patience will ultimately be the best course of action. Of course, I could be wrong. But there are times when GMs feel the pressure to do something drastic and end up doing something they absolutely regret.

Washington Capitals

But the bottom line is, the Caps have not hung in there standings-wise as MacLellan had hoped. They’re far from out of it, but a .462 points percentage through 26 games is indeed a hole dug.

MacLellan has 11 pending UFAs on his roster, including the likes of Dmitry Orlov, Lars Eller and Nick Jensen. Without a turnaround, the Caps GM will be in listening mode soon, followed by selling mode. We’re not there yet, but MacLellan will know what comes next by the new year.

Ottawa Senators

Here’s the thing about this team, though — and maybe I’m totally wrong here, but I honestly believe it: There’s still a chance the Senators get on a heater and salvage some semblance of a season. Not a playoff spot, of course, but the kind of hockey for the rest of the season that at least reassures they’re on the right track.

Vancouver Canucks

Finally, there’s head coach Bruce Boudreau. He replaced Green behind the bench a year ago and his contract expires after this season, but given the pressure on management to enact change, I don’t think it’s a question of “if” but rather “when,” in terms of a Canucks coaching change. That’s the crappy part of the business, for sure.

Where this team sits after the March 3 trade deadline and what its salary-cap situation looks like heading into the offseason will be interesting to watch.

Jakub Voracek's Future Is In Doubt

12/05/2022 at 1:58pm EST

from Craig Merz at the CBJ website,

Jakub Voracek said Monday that his chances of playing again this season with the Columbus Blue Jackets are "very slim."

The 33-year-old forward sustained a concussion Nov. 4 at the 2022 NHL Global Series in Tampere Finland, when he was hit below the nose with a high stick from Dryden Hunt of the Colorado Avalanche. He has not played since.

"After talking to many people and many doctors we came to the conclusion that as of right now, I'm not capable of coming back, I won't be coming back anytime soon," Voracek said. "Obviously, I'm going to make my best efforts to do that (return) but it might be a long process and as of now I don't see myself playing in the near future.

"I had a lot of head injuries in the past and that's something I've got to think about and be smart about and that's where I stand right now."

Voracek said he is not contemplating retirement at this point. He is signed through the 2023-24 season.

"If I'm going to be medically cleared, I'm going to try. We'll see about that," he said. "And retirement? I can't retire, I'm still under contract. I would like to finish it off. If I'm going to be able to, I'll be happy about that. If I won't be, that's going to be up to doctors.
