The Unmotivated Vancouver Canucks

12/02/2022 at 4:17am EST

from Iain MacIntyre of Sportsnet,

Thatcher Demko’s dark start to the National Hockey League season turned black Thursday when the goalie was injured trying to rescue his collapsing team. It’s hard to see any light around the Vancouver Canucks now.

For the second straight home game, the Canucks were dull and leaden at the start, outskated and overrun by the Florida Panthers in a 5-1 loss at Rogers Arena. The Washington Capitals beat the Canucks by the same score on Tuesday, but this game was worse for Vancouver.

It was worse because there was no discernible boost in energy, emotion or cerebral function by the Canucks after the previous game, and because on Thursday they lost not only another lopsided contest but their starting goalie.

Demko hobbled off the ice with what appeared to be a significant leg injury with 47 seconds remaining in the first period after the Canucks surrendered three goals in 59 seconds to the Panthers. It was the fastest any National Hockey League team has surrendered three goals this season.

Below watch the 3 quick goals by the Panthers and the Demko injury...

NHL Short Notes

12/02/2022 at 3:19am EST

* Steven Stamkos celebrated 1,000 NHL points as the Lightning captain became the ninth active player to accomplish the feat and first to do so in franchise history.

* A goal in the first 11 seconds, a game-tying tally in the final 10 seconds of regulation before completing the comeback in overtime and holding off the high-flying Devils after they scored three times in 2:38 – it was quite the night for the Predators.

* The quick goals continued as both the Hurricanes and Panthers added to the action with a trio of goals in 1:04 and 0:59, respectively.

* Jason Robertson was one of the stars featured in a busy #NHLStats: Live Updates after scoring a hat trick and becoming the first player to reach 20-goals in 2022-23.

Numbers After 22 Games

12/01/2022 at 3:35pm EST

from Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

Plenty of numbers tell the story of the Detroit Red Wings in their first 22 games. A .614 winning percentage. The NHL’s 11th best record. Winning records at home (7-3-3) and away (4-3-2). A positive goal-differential. A 20.5% power play.

The numbers add up to an improved Detroit Red Wings team. Here is a more complete Red Wings by the numbers:

  1. Number of times the Red Wings have been shutout this season in the first 22 games. They were blanked eight times last season.
  2. Number of times the coach Derek Lalonde’s team has have only scored one goal this season. They scored three or more goals in 14 of 22 games this season (63.6%).

Hockey Thoughts On The First Day In December

12/01/2022 at 8:59am EST

from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet,

- Good line on Wednesday about Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews: “Right now, there’s more talk from people who can’t make it happen than from people who can.” Expect this to gain traction in the new year, with more clarity on what (or where) both players prefer. On some level, I think Kane in particular would like to take a run at some of Stan Mikita’s franchise records (games played, assists and points). Therefore, there were rumours he might prefer to play out the season in Chicago and decide his future in free agency, but several sources threw cold water on that idea. As you can imagine, there’s been no extension talk in either case.

- It is an extremely difficult puzzle to piece together, but I do think Florida would have interest in Erik Karlsson. Not sure how it could happen, though.

- Toronto’s on an excellent run despite a banged-up defence and goaltending that just recently returned to full health. The Maple Leafs are fourth in the NHL just weeks after we had the entire organization looking for new jobs. They have time to let this play out, but it’s safe to say they will save their best assets for whatever they feel they might need on the blueline. There’s the possibility of adding a left-shot scorer, but that’s not the priority and I think they’d also like to show Matthew Knies there’s a path when he’s ready to leave NCAA Minnesota.

- I get lots of DMs about the New York Rangers (my DMs have to be the least exciting on Twitter). I really think they are trying to be patient, hoping that some who played important roles on the road to the Eastern Conference Final last season rediscover that form. Igor Shesterkin should be the least of anyone’s concerns, but it’s always an adjustment to deal with the weight of expectations once they really arrive. He also played a career-high 73 games last year (including the playoffs). Shorter summer, higher expectations. Sometimes that’s hard to navigate the first time you experience it. And he’s not the only one.

Fix The Power Play

12/01/2022 at 7:18am EST

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Said Andrew Copp: “Satisfied with the way we came back from 4-1 down, it’s a good sign. But it still sucks right now that we didn’t get the next point. We had a couple of chances to put it away. Makes it sting a lot more than maybe it should.”

Lalonde said it’s frustrating to be 0 for 10 on the power play the past two games, after an 8 for 20 stretch.

“If we get the power play either of these last two games, we’re probably looking at more than one point,” he said. “The difference tonight is it got some looks, but again, the effort, the five-on-five play, the compete from the guys was really impressive.”

NHL Short Notes

12/01/2022 at 1:59am EST

* It was a November to remember – filled with new storylines that included the revitalization of teams left out of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, new stars emerging as League leaders and the most goals ever scored in a November in NHL history.

* Mitchell Marner extended his point streak to 18 games and now has his name atop a 105-year franchise record – joining Patrick Kane as the only active players to lead an ‘Original Six’ franchise in that category.

* Connor McDavid recorded his 12th multi-point game of the season – tied with Jason Robertson for the most among all players – while becoming the first skater to reach 40 points in 2022-23.

The Talk After A Shootout Loss To Buffalo

11/30/2022 at 11:29pm EST

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

David Perron and two Oskar Sundqvist goals in the third period tied the game 4-4 after the Wings looked headed for another disappointing loss and trailing 4-1.

The Wings had a 1 minute, 27 second two-man advantage in the final two minutes of regulation time but failed to convert, capping an 0-for-7 night on the power play and forcing overtime.

"Supposed to be, not satisfied, but happy with the way we came back and battled from down 4-1, and it's a good sign," forward Andrew Copp said. "But it still stinks right now not getting the extra point. We had a couple chances to put it away, and it stings a lot more than it should."...

"I'm real proud of the guys, you just don't come back from three goals down in this league, and the way we did it," coach Derek Lalonde said. "The fight back started at the end of the second period, and down 4-1 and things weren't going our way, the guys just dug in and I'm really proud of the group. This is a huge point we'll tap back into throughout the season."

Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic got his first start since Nov. 12 (he did relieve Ville Husso Monday), struggled to open the game but rebounded to keep the Wings close while stopping 30 shots.

"He battled," Lalonde said. "It's a game that's not going well for him, he doesn't look himself, and to compete and battle the way he did, it's good on him."

Your 2022 US Hockey Hall Of Fame Inductees

11/30/2022 at 11:21pm EST

from Nicholas J. Cotsonika of the NHL website,

The United States Hockey Hall of Fame celebrated its 50th anniversary Wednesday when it inducted the Class of 2022 at Saint Paul RiverCentre.

The class represented how far American hockey has come in a half-century, how it keeps striving for more.

The late Warren Strelow, a pioneering goaltending coach, received the Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the United States on the day Ryan Miller, the winningest American goalie in NHL history, was enshrined.

There were two female players: Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson and Monique Lamoureux-Morando, twin sisters who each won an Olympic gold medal and six world championships.

There was the first sled hockey player: Steve Cash, who won three Paralympic gold medals and five world championships.

And then there was the late Jim Johannson, the beloved USA Hockey executive who dedicated himself to developing American players from the grassroots to the elite levels.

Quick Recap- Detroit Red Wings/Buffalo Sabres

11/30/2022 at 9:57pm EST

The Wings scored first just like they did against Toronto then gave up the next four, just like the Toronto game. After 40 minutes it was 4-1 Buffalo.

Unlike the Toronto game, Detroit scored the next three goals in regulation to tie the game 4-4. The Wings had numerous chances late in the third on a 5 on 3 power play but could not score.

In overtime the Sabres controlled the puck most of the time but really not many chances to score.

Buffalo won the shootout 1-0 to win the game 5-4.

Growing Pains

11/30/2022 at 6:30pm EST

Heya everyone. After a nice four game winning streak it’s back down to Earth with the loss the other night. It was a test of sorts, and the Wings(growing pains)weren’t completely ready for the Leafs. Husso was, in my estimation, a bit fatigued after playing three games in six nights. Conventional wisdom is to go with the hot hand, but whatever.

The Wings had their chances as well with 44 SOG, but, they just couldn’t find the back of the net enough to win it. Nedeljkovic came in about halfway through and stopped all 12 shots he faced, which should prove a good warmup for his starting in goal tonight. Another plus is Seider scoring, so more goals from our blue liners is still trending well for the Wings. It’s time to move on….

It’s the Sabers vs the Wings. The puck is set to drop around 7:00 PM, and will be broadcast exclusively on TNT. You can also listen on Red Wings Radio Network (97.1 The Ticket in Detroit).

Kris Letang Out After Suffering A Stroke

11/30/2022 at 5:22pm EST

from Wes Crosby of,

Kris Letang will be out indefinitely for the Pittsburgh Penguins after he had a stroke.

The 35-year-old defenseman is not experiencing any lasting effects of the stroke but will have tests over the next week, general manager Ron Hextall said. The condition is not believed to be career threatening.

Letang did not take part in an optional morning skate Tuesday and was scratched prior to a 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. He attended that game, talking to Hextall and going into the locker room after.

"I think, first and foremost, Kris is doing well considering what happened," Hextall said on Wednesday. "He was at the game last night. I chatted with him for a while, actually the whole second period. When [coach Mike Sullivan] addressed the team after the game and let the players know exactly what happened, Kris actually came into the room.

"He wanted to assure everybody that he's doing as well as possible. There's no lingering effects right now at this point from the stroke. … Thus far, everything is looking as positive as it could be."

Bally Sports Is Losing Subscribers

11/30/2022 at 2:35pm EST

from Daniel Kaplan of The Athletic,

Diamond Sports owns 19 regional sports channels airing games of 42 NBA, MLB and NHL teams, feeding those clubs substantial sums that cover a large part of their player payrolls.

Times are generally good for the economics of these sports, but hovering over these teams is the very real possibility Diamond could file for bankruptcy, or perhaps even restructure what it pays the teams, a casualty of the decline in the regional sports channel model and the inflated $9.6 billion price Diamond parent Sinclair paid in 2019 for the network of channels....

“We have seen quite a bit of (subscriber erosion) acceleration over the year,” said Scott Shapiro, Sinclair’s chief financial and operating officer, on the earnings call. “And that’s probably driving, you know, at least 75 percent of the change to (cash flow) guidance, when you look at the magnitude of where churn expectations were at the beginning of the year, to where we’re projecting for the full year.”...

“There is no sale process,” Ripley said, appearing to rebut speculation Diamond is to be sold. “But, you know, we’re talking to parties about deleveraging, strategic partnerships, and things of that nature.” Deleveraging means reducing debt.

Some of those parties are the leagues themselves, which have been reported to want to buy Diamond. Ripely’s comment suggests otherwise, but there is no doubt the NBA, NHL, and MLB have a keen interest in keeping Diamond afloat, and people close to the situation confirmed they are active in the discussions.

The Better Bruins

11/30/2022 at 9:54am EST

from Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe,

Tuesday’s Garden victory over the Lightning makes the Bruins 13-0 at home this season. In a league that’s more than 100 years old, no NHL team has ever won its first 13 home games. The Bruins are tied with the Devils for most points in the first quarter of their season.

Most new coaches inherit bad teams. It’s relatively easy to make them look average.

This is different. This is making a good team better. And it’s rare....

“It’s a combination of the way Monty sees the game,” said Sweeney, “similar to Bruce and Claude [Julien] in maintaining defensive structure, but also, looking at a five-man attack and being involved. Communication styles are different for all coaches, and that’s part of Monty’s personality. That needed to be allowed to play out. I envisioned it, having connected with the players.”

Less than five minutes after Sweeney said those words, Taylor Hall scored in the second minute of play to give the surging Bruins another early lead. A Hall one-timer from the high slot on the power play broke a 1-1 tie in the third and delivered yet another victory.

Hall is a former NHL MVP. And he’s playing on the third line . . . behind the first line of Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron, and DeBrusk. And the second line of Pavel Zacha, David Pastrnak, and Krejci.

Revenge Game?

11/30/2022 at 9:46am EST

from Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

The “beat Buffalo” challenge comes with a side order of payback. One month ago, the Sabres put an 8-3 beating on the Red Wings. Tage Thompson enjoyed a six-point night against the Red Wings’ defense and goalie Alex Nedeljkovic. Lalonde has already announced Nedeljkovic will start tonight.

The Sabres’ lopsided win over the Red Wings on Halloween night was part of a better-than-expected 7-3 start. The Sabres are a different team today. Since that good start, the Sabres are 2-10.

But their offensive might still makes them dangerous. They rank fifth in the NHL with a 3.68 goals-per-game scoring average. However, the impact of their scoring prowess is undermined by a 3.59 goals-against-average.

The 6-foot-7 Thompson is still thriving, boasting six points in his past four games. He has 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points in 22 games. The Sabres do have a quality power play (25.6%) and one of the NHL’s worst penalty killing efficiencies (70.4%).

We can guess Nedeljkovic, looking sharp in his relief role Monday, will be extra motivated tonight. That game is the primary reason why his GAA stands at 4.01.
