Back To Back

12/04/2022 at 5:50pm EST

Hi everyone, and welcome to tonight’s game. I missed last night’s debacle, just lucky I guess, and, I almost missed tonight’s tilt as well.

Anyway, from what I’ve read, it was a throwaway. So back to the drawing board, and fix the darn power play, and, play the full 60 minutes like it’s the last 6 minutes of the third period. We may not get the win, but we’ll get to watch something better than last night’s exercise in futility.

It’s the Wings vs the Blue Jackets. The puck is set to drop around 6:00 PM, and will be broadcast on Bally Sports Detroit Extra and the Red Wings Radio Network (WWJ Newsradio 950 in Detroit). Also available on NHLPP/ESPN+ and BSOH.

Too Much Gambling Ads And Talk

12/04/2022 at 1:51pm EST

from Jack Todd at the Montreal Gazette,

The Saturday evening tussle between the Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers marked the first time this season I’ve watched a hockey game on the CBC, and I felt like I’d hopped a flight to Las Vegas and landed in the midst of the MGM Grand Race & Sports Book.

Wall-to-wall gambling ads doesn’t even cover it. There were times when the face of the oleaginous Cabbie would appear to offer in-game updates or various betting parlays. Almost overnight, Hockey Night in Canada, one of our most sacred institutions, has become a gambling website. It’s not even NHL hockey — it’s FanDuel hockey.

HNIC isn’t alone. The wholesale takeover of the sports world by gambling interests has completely altered the simple experience of watching the game with your family on a Saturday night. ESPN, TSN, Sportsnet, TVA, now the CBC — they’re all in it, and the experience is the same whether you’re watching the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB or (for all I know) professional lacrosse.

Hockey Notes Today

12/04/2022 at 8:51am EST

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

- Jason Robertson has scored 80 goals in his first 152 NHL games with the Dallas Stars, which is hugely impressive. And getting more spectacular by the day. In the first 152 games of his career, Auston Matthews had 84 goals. Matthews leads Robertson in goals, Robertson leads Matthews in points, 164-148.

- Speculation continues about Matthews’ future with the Leafs, even though there is this season and next season on his contract. Some are saying he doesn’t like this roster much. But his on-ice body language suggests otherwise. Question to ponder: why would he make any decision on his future at this time of year, especially as he’s struggling and especially before you have any idea of what might happen in this season’s playoffs?

- Add Igor Shesterkin’s name to the list of goaltenders who have had marvelous seasons but not necessarily two in a row. Thatcher Demko is on that list, too. Once upon a time, the NHL had Dominik Hasek, Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, Ed Belfour, Grant Fuhr, Tom Barrasso, and Curtis Joseph. Today, there is Andrei Vasilevskiy and whichever goalie happens to be hot each year. The hot one this year: Ilya Sorokin of the Islanders.

Playing With Frustration

12/04/2022 at 6:37am EST

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

The Detroit Red Wings wrapped up their five-game homestand Saturday with a frustrating 4-1 loss to Vegas.

“It’s going to be a little bit frustrating because I think the underlying numbers are going to look very similar to (Monday’s 4-2 loss to Toronto),” coach Derek Lalonde said. “There’s going to be some nerd telling us we should’ve won that game on expected goals. But that doesn’t happen against really good teams.”

Minutes after the game, Dylan Larkin turned his attention to Sunday’s date in Columbus, the start of a tough four-game trip during which he hopes his team can recoup some points.

“It’s just another one of those games where we’re really close, but it’s not enough to get a result,” Larkin said. “It hurts, but we got to switch focus and be ready to go tomorrow night because it’s back-to-back. We’ve been good on back-to-backs. We need to come out and play a solid road game.”

NHL Short Notes

12/04/2022 at 6:05am EST

* The Devils and Bruins continued their winning ways Saturday, both extending their respective winning streaks while also becoming the first teams to reach 20 wins this season.

* Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl each posted a four-point performance in Edmonton’s win at Rogers Place, with the former becoming the second player to hit 20 goals in 2022-23.

* Jason Robertson will look to extend his point streak to 18 games when the Stars host the Wild on a five-game Sunday.

The Homestand Ends On A Losing Note

12/04/2022 at 12:13am EST

from Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now,

Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde is frequently referencing the fine line his team is skating each night between victory and defeat.

Following a 4-1 loss on Saturday to the Vegas Golden Knights at Little Caesars Arena, it was again a fitting topic of conversation.

“Our margin of error is small to begin with,” Lalonde said. “It’s just who we are and where we’re at. And it’s even less against really good teams.”

Completing a five-game homestand with a 2-2-1 record, the underlying numbers were revealing for the Red Wings. They were 2-0-1 against the Nashville Predators, Arizona Coyotes and Buffalo Sabres. Detroit went 0-2 facing two top clubs, the Pacific Division-leading Golden Knights (Pacific) and the Toronto Maple Leafs, second in the Atlantic.

“It’s a little frustrating and a little bit of reality of where we’re at,” Lalonde said. “The guys compete and there’s the will and the want right now.

“If you look at the homestand, we go 2-0-1 against three teams sitting outside the playoff bubble right now and we go 0-2 versus two elite teams.”

Showing Some Character

12/03/2022 at 6:30pm EST

Good evening and welcome to one and all. As we all know the Wings showed some character the other night to overcome a 4-1 deficit against Buffalo only to lose the extra point in OT. Berggren opened the scoring in the first period, but after that the Wings couldn’t get anything by Buffalo until the third.

Perron led the way in the top of the third, pulling the Wings within 2, then Sundqvist pretty much stunned with 2 quick goals to tie it up midway through the third period. A lackluster power play, including a 5 on 3 in the waning minutes, led to the OT which sealed our fate in the skills competition. Yeah it’s a point, but, cold comfort nonetheless.

Tonight is the last game in the 5 game homestand and the Wings need to end it on a positive note. Fixing the power play would be a good start….

It’s the Knights vs the Wings. The puck is set to drop around 7:00 PM, and will be broadcast on Bally Sports Detroit and the Red Wings Radio Network (97.1 The Ticket in Detroit). Also available on NHLPP/ESPN+ and ATTSN-RM.

Bruce Cassidy Is Doing Just Fine With The Vegas Golden Knights

12/03/2022 at 12:29pm EST

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,

Bruce Cassidy, abruptly dismissed as the Bruins coach in June, will be back at TD Garden Monday night, with his Vegas Golden Knights nipping at the back tips of the Devils’ and Bruins’ blades for the No. 1 spot in the NHL overall standings.

In his span of six seasons behind the Black-and-Gold bench, Cassidy directed the club to the 2019 Stanley Cup Final, rolled up a franchise-best .672 points percentage, then was kicked curbside by Don Sweeney some three weeks after the general manager told him he would be back in Boston for 2022-23.

Sweeney’s public explanation for the move: messaging. Cassidy was outta here because the players, in the GM’s opinion, weren’t picking up what he was putting down — be it due to tone, timing, content, or frailty of ego.

Cassidy, whose Knights carried a .700 winning percentage (17-7-1) into Saturday night’s matchup in Detroit, said in a phone interview this past week that he has kept Sweeney’s farewell words in mind.

Video- After The Morning Skate

12/03/2022 at 12:10pm EST

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

The Red Wings (11-6-5) wrap up a five-game homestand. Husso will be back in net after being pulled midway through Monday’s 4-2 loss to the Maple Leafs.

“Right now, we’re looking to win our homestand,” coach Derek Lalonde said. “We’re 2-1-1. This could be a great homestand, this could be an OK homestand. We’re trying to grow as a team and it’s playing these teams that are already there and established.”

The Golden Knights (17-7-1) are 4-5-1 in their past 10 following a nine-game winning streak under Bruce Cassidy, who coached the Bruins the previous six seasons.

Jack Eichel, in his first full season with Vegas, has 12 goals and 28 points.

“These teams that are three deep with skill have created some issues for us,” Lalonde said. “The three centers, it creates matchup issues.”

NHL Short Notes

12/03/2022 at 10:02am EST

* Brady Tkachuk netted Ottawa’s latest-tying goal in over four years and found the back of the net in the final seconds of overtime to rally the Senators to victory in his 300th career game.

* Patrik Laine made an impact in his return to Columbus’ lineup, posting a multi-goal performance against his former club in Winnipeg.

* Hockey Night in Canada will include Mitchell Marner aiming to extend his point streak to 19 games and place his name alone atop the Maple Leafs history books and Alex Ovechkin skating in his 1,300th NHL game.

Tyler Bertuzzi Will Miss Another Six Weeks

12/02/2022 at 3:42pm EST

from Kevin Allen of Detroit Hockey Now,

“You feel for him,” Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. “He’s out trying to get his game back in order and obviously has another setback.”

The setback is a six-week stay on the injured list. Bertuzzi had successful surgery this morning to repair damage to his left hand that resulted from being hit by teammate Ben Chiarot in Wednesday’s 5-4 shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres. The Red Wings will only say it is an upper body injury.

He had only been back seven games after spending a month on the injured list after he appeared to injure his right hand while blocking a shot in the second game of the season against the New Jersey Devils.

“Both were bad luck,” Lalonde said. “This one was on the offensive side, just being in the hard areas around the net. This other one, he blocked a shot on the defensive side of things.”

NHL Teams In NYC Area On A Record Pace

12/02/2022 at 9:02am EST

from Greg Wyshynski of ESPN,

Through Tuesday night, the Devils, Islanders and Rangers had a combined .657 points percentage, or the number of points in the standings divided by the total possible points. If that holds, it would be the most successful season for the three rivals combined since the Devils relocated from Colorado in 1982. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the previous high for combined points percentage is .599 in the 1993-94 season.

As Stan Fischler told me recently: "I don't recall a trifecta quite as special as this."

That assessment carries the weight of history. Fischler attended his first Rangers game in 1939. As a journalist, he covered each of these franchises during their Stanley Cup championship runs. He's seen a lot of New York hockey. He's never seen it look like this.

"Right now, we have the rare opportunity -- slumps notwithstanding -- for each of the Met clubs having a shot at making the playoffs," he said. "This is rare, exciting stuff for the fans overall, and me in particular. It feels like a once-in-a-lifetime experience and I'm sopping it up every night."

The Unmotivated Vancouver Canucks

12/02/2022 at 4:17am EST

from Iain MacIntyre of Sportsnet,

Thatcher Demko’s dark start to the National Hockey League season turned black Thursday when the goalie was injured trying to rescue his collapsing team. It’s hard to see any light around the Vancouver Canucks now.

For the second straight home game, the Canucks were dull and leaden at the start, outskated and overrun by the Florida Panthers in a 5-1 loss at Rogers Arena. The Washington Capitals beat the Canucks by the same score on Tuesday, but this game was worse for Vancouver.

It was worse because there was no discernible boost in energy, emotion or cerebral function by the Canucks after the previous game, and because on Thursday they lost not only another lopsided contest but their starting goalie.

Demko hobbled off the ice with what appeared to be a significant leg injury with 47 seconds remaining in the first period after the Canucks surrendered three goals in 59 seconds to the Panthers. It was the fastest any National Hockey League team has surrendered three goals this season.

Below watch the 3 quick goals by the Panthers and the Demko injury...

NHL Short Notes

12/02/2022 at 3:19am EST

* Steven Stamkos celebrated 1,000 NHL points as the Lightning captain became the ninth active player to accomplish the feat and first to do so in franchise history.

* A goal in the first 11 seconds, a game-tying tally in the final 10 seconds of regulation before completing the comeback in overtime and holding off the high-flying Devils after they scored three times in 2:38 – it was quite the night for the Predators.

* The quick goals continued as both the Hurricanes and Panthers added to the action with a trio of goals in 1:04 and 0:59, respectively.

* Jason Robertson was one of the stars featured in a busy #NHLStats: Live Updates after scoring a hat trick and becoming the first player to reach 20-goals in 2022-23.
