BUFFALO, NY (June 24, 2011) – The Buffalo Sabres today announced they have signed a purchase agreement with the Rochester Americans hockey club. The AHL Board of Governors unanimously approved the transaction earlier today. The Sabres also announced their affiliation agreement with the Portland Pirates has ended.
The Buffalo Sabres will have no further comment at this time. The Sabres expect to hold a press conference in Rochester next week to set forth their plans for the franchise.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After serving 15 seasons as the only general manager in Grand Rapids Griffins history, Bob McNamara on Thursday announced that he will not return for the 2011-12 season, looking instead to pursue new opportunities in the hockey world.
McNamara guided the Griffins to aggregate records of 627-448-135 (0.574) during the regular season and 45-47 (0.489) during the playoffs while helping advance 117 players to the NHL. Since 2000, the Griffins have claimed five division titles and earned regular season championships in both the American Hockey League (2005-06) and the International Hockey League (2000-01).
“It’s been a great run over the last 15 years, beyond what I could have imagined when I came to Grand Rapids,” said McNamara. “But as difficult as it is to leave this organization, it’s time for me to look for a new challenge.
“Staying in one place for so long doesn’t happen very often in our industry, and I’ve been very fortunate to work with outstanding players, coaches and front office staff and enjoy the incredible support of Griffins fans. Most of all, I’d like to thank [owners] Dan DeVos and David Van Andel for the opportunity they gave me, the trust they placed in me, and the friendship they showed me throughout the years,” added McNamara.
Glendale, Arizona—- Phoenix Coyotes Assistant General Manager Brad Treliving announced today that the Coyotes have signed a marketing/player affiliation agreement with the Arizona Sundogs of the Central Hockey League (CHL). The agreement allows for Coyotes prospects to be assigned to the Sundogs at the direction of the Coyotes.
“We are excited to announce our affiliation agreement with the Arizona Sundogs,” said Treliving. “We look forward to working with the Sundogs as we collectively continue to grow the game of hockey throughout the state of Arizona. We look forward to building a great relationship.”
The Arizona Sundogs are a double-A minor-league professional ice hockey team based in Prescott Valley, Arizona that began play in the Central Hockey League in 2006 and is set to celebrate its fifth anniversary season in 2010-11. The team plays its home games at Tim’s Toyota Center
SPRINGFIELD, Mass./NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. … The American Hockey League and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association today announced the ratification of a new four-year Collective Bargaining Agreement.
The new CBA, which is effective through August 31, 2014, has been ratified by both the AHL’s Board of Governors and the overwhelming majority of AHL players.
The CBA has been modified to include significant enhancements to the health and welfare plan currently offered to AHL players and their families, to provide flexibility to the AHL in Calder Cup Playoff scheduling and financing, and to allow for increases to per-diem and minimum salary as well as modifications to housing and travel provisions.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins on Friday announced that Curt Fraser has signed a new two-year contract to remain the team’s head coach through the 2011-12 season.
Named the eighth head coach in Griffins history on July 23, 2008, Fraser has compiled records of 77-64-9-10 (0.541) in the regular season and 4-6 (0.400) in the playoffs during his two seasons behind the team’s bench.
ARLINGTON, Va. – Mark French, the Hershey Bears’ assistant coach the past two seasons, has been promoted to head coach of the Washington Capitals’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, Capitals vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. Troy Mann has been named the Bears’ new assistant coach and will join French behind the bench as Hershey defends its Calder Cup championship in 2009-10.
French replaces Bob Woods, who was promoted to assistant coach in Washington after leading the Bears to the AHL title. He joined the Hershey staff on Jan. 2, 2008, after Woods had been promoted to head coach.
Brian Burke, president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Friday that the club will not renew the contract of Toronto Marlies head coach Greg Gilbert. Marlies assistant coaches Joe Paterson and Jim Hughes have been given permission to pursue other opportunities.
“Greg has been a valuable and loyal member of our organization,” said Burke. “We appreciate the dedication of the Marlies’ coaching staff and we wish them well in their future endeavours.”
General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the Edmonton Oilers have appointed Rob Daum as head coach of the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League, replacing Jeff Truitt for the remainder of the 2008-09 season.
Daum, who was serving as a pro scout with the Oilers this season, will assume his role immediately with Edmonton’s AHL affiliate and will be behind the bench for the Falcons game at Manchester on Wednesday, February 11th. It is the first game of a four game road trip for Springfield.
Oilers General Manager Steve Tambellini says, “The Oilers organization would like to thank Jeff for his commitment and effort. Jeff’s an outstanding individual who worked hard everyday to improve his hockey club.”
Daum is currently in his second season as a member of the Oilers’ organization after serving as an assistant coach with Craig MacTavish’s staff in 2007-08.
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ... The American Hockey League today announced that Norfolk Admirals right wing Steve Downie has been suspended for three (3) games as a result of his actions in a game at Worcester on Nov. 19.
Downie was suspended under the provisions of AHL Rule 29.1 (supplementary discipline).
