Pick The Champ

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Vancouver Province,

Province Sports wants your help in crowning the NHL’s All-Time Heavyweight Champ. We enlisted a panel of experts to select 32 great fighters from various NHL eras. We’re holding an imaginary single-knockout elimination tournament to narrow that field down to one.
You can pick winners for these 16 bouts until Wednesday at midnight. Readers’ votes will count for 50 per cent, and our panel’s for the other 50 per cent.

A Matter Of Respect

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

Perhaps one day the commissioner actually would like to explain how Versus treats the NHL with more respect than ESPN. Perhaps the commissioner might like to explain why Versus doesn’t have a nightly one-hour NHL highlights show, or a nightly one-hour panel show devoted to the NHL.
Perhaps one day the commissioner would like to explain why Versus does not present a half-hour pregame show. Perhaps one day the commissioner would like to present his definition of respect.

“Ghost” Writer

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,

The general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs was the victim of lots of unintentional comedy over the last week when someone in charge of their World Wide Web site mistakenly posted another writer’s musings on John Ferguson’s blog.
Thus it appeared that Ferguson wrote on http://www.mapleleafs.com that his “role here at Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment should be curtailed to being the wheel man for the office Tim Hortons run.”

Zherdev To Undergo Health Exam

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Columbus Dispatch,

Blue Jackets president and general manager Doug MacLean spent at least two hours on the phone yesterday, talking to Zherdev’s agent and team doctors, to set up a battery of tests for Zherdev as soon as today.
“Is it (mononucleosis)? Is it a virus? I’m not a doctor, but something is wrong here,” MacLean said
Part of the problem is that Zherdev did not fully divulge his symptoms to Blue Jackets coaches or the training staff.

Fading Fans In Chicago

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Dave Caldwell of the New York Times,

Frank Pellico is the Chicago Blackhawks’ longtime organist, which means he usually gets to play in front of thousands of empty red seats at the United Center and for a mediocre team that often disappoints the fans who do show up.
“Well, each game is brand new to us,” Pellico said cheerfully last Sunday on a snowy, windswept afternoon in Chicago. “We have to do each game like we’re in first place. Nobody backs down. I don’t see many down people at all.”

Some Players Want The “Edge” Now

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Robert Picarello of Fox Sports,

But in talking to the players, some wouldn’t mind making the switch right now.
“I love the new Rbk EDGE jersey,” Buffalo’s Chris Drury said. “It’s a very comfortable uniform, much lighter than what we’re used to. It will help me and everyone in the league perform to our maximum capability, particularly late in a game when we can sometimes get a little slower and heavier. This is a real step forward and it will be great for the league and our game. I wish I had it earlier in my career and if I could wear it as early as this week, I would.”

What’s Good About Hockey?

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

Tony at Skate2Stick offers a fan’s perspective on the good stuff we can focus on,

Now I am a fan, I visit the NHL website several times a day, I have an account at NHL connect, there own blogging section with all sorts of different groups and I visit many NHL blog’s like Kukla’s Korner, Canucks & Beyond, Behind the Jersey, NHL Digest, Puckheads Thoughts and many, many others. I read over 50 articles a day and I even write on my own blog. I have yet to see a poll asking how I feel about the schedule, I emailed NHL Live the other day and I was disappointed that they did not get to my email as time ran out, but it asked that very question, where is this poll located and how do I sign up for fan survey’s. I still have yet to see this wonderland. Now we can beat this dead horse for days, weeks and even months, but I want to say what’s right about hockey and finding fault with everything is not what’s right about hockey.

Holland Won’t Deal Prospects

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Windsor Star,

“I can tell you what I want to give, but if the other guy doesn’t want it, then there’s no deal,” Holland said.
Holland makes no bones about what lengths he’s willing to go to make it happen.
“To trade a player off our roster, we’re going to have to get a much better player,” he said. “Would we trade away a draft pick? Yeah, we’d trade a draft pick.”
What he’s not as willing to do is deal prospects. Competing for the Stanley Cup year after year has cost the Wings several draft picks, and their future talent pool isn’t nearly as deep as other clubs.
“We might have 5, 6, 7 players we think are going to be NHLers, while some other team might have a dozen,” Holland said.

Coffey Happy With What He Does

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the National Post via Canada.com,

But there were no goaltenders, nor Calgary Flames forecheckers to be found at Coffey’s Toyota dealership in Bolton the other day, just a crew of employees who had been slugged in the gut by a colleague’s abrupt departure for a competitor.
Coffey had heard a few speeches in his time. From Glen Sather, Scotty Bowman and the rest.
But now it was his turn to do the talking.
“When we lost Carter, I said to Dean our sales manager: ‘It’s time for you to step up,’ ” Coffey says. “I said to him: when Gretzky left in ‘88 Messier stepped up. And Dean said to me: ‘F—-, I love Messier. I love Messier.’
“They love when I talk about that stuff around here.”
