“This” Is Really, Really Intelligent Marketing

Blog: KK Hockey By George Malik

from NHL.com: finally, the NHL pitches its players!

The National Hockey League has produced more than 30 player features and TV promos designed to give hockey fans a glimpse into the lives and personalities of their favorite NHL players, including Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, Washington Capitals left wing Alexander Ovechkin, San Jose Sharks center Joe Thornton and Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco. The features and promos, produced by NHL Productions, currently are airing during game telecasts on VERSUS, TSN, CBC, the NHL Network and local affiliates and in-arena. In three-minute television features, NHL players are shown at home with their families, enjoying their favorite hobbies and participating in community and charitable programs. "NHL players are exceptional athletes," said Ed Horne, President, NHL Enterprises. "But they are also surfers, cooks and dads and that is the purpose of these features -- to show how our players live their lives off the ice."

Datsyuk’s Hurting; Diet For The Geo-Bachelor

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

Important stuff first. It would appear Pavel Datsyuk, just as he seems to be heating up, may be hurting. Ted Kulfan/Detroit News

Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk missed Wednesday's practice with what coach Mike Babcock described as "stiffness." Babcock did not say what the injury was but added he expects Datsyuk will be able to play Thursday against Chicago.
Ok Mike. Is it me, or has Babcock publicly expected every hurt Wing to play the next game after their injury...only to report a few hours before the game that they skated but "couldn't go"? I'm at the point where if an ailment is bad enough to mention to the media, it's probably bad enough to keep that player out a few games. The IwoCPO bachelor dinner tonite: a mini, microwavable container of tomato soup and one of those mini-cereal boxes of corn flakes. Both items I found hidden under the sink in my office. Man, I'm living it up. At some point I might have to teach myself how to (a) shop, (b) cook and (3) stop whining.

Morozov Looking At The NHL

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Pierre Lebrun of the CP via Metro News,

"I follow those guys that have gone from the Super League to the NHL this year," Morozov told The Canadian Press from Moscow on Wednesday. "It's really interesting for me to see what Malkin is doing, playing for the NHL team where I was before (Pittsburgh). "Those guys (Malkin and Semin) are doing well and I think I have a good chance of doing some good things in the NHL as well next season. I will be 30 years old, I feel really good, I'm in great shape and I have a lot of confidence." He almost joined his compatriots back in the NHL this season. There was interest from several teams and Morozov agonized before finally agreeing to go back to Ak-Bars Kazan for a third straight season.

On the Hockey Blogs

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

By Alanah D McGinley Hockey blogging entertainment from this past week: From John Bollwitt, we have the question of hockey arena music -- Is 80's rock the only way to go? No way, says John:

To me, going to a game should be an experience. When you go see a movie, the soundtrack is part of what makes the whole thing worthwhile. When the movie is tense, the music reflects it. When it’s a party scene, then the music takes on the vibe. You don’t get to that pinnacle point in the plot and say, “Ok, bring on the AC/DC and Guns n’ Roses!”

Hope It Doesn’t Happen Again

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Phil Stacey at the Eagle-Tribune,

Hearing about Kessel's horrible predicament, it's impossible not to think back a generation (or two) ago to another young gun for the Bruins who saw his career cut short at the tender age of 20 - and hope that the same scenario doesn't present itself to Kessel. Anyone who loves the Bruins and is at least 30 years old certainly remembers Normand Leveille. So much promise, so much talent, all taken away from him on a fateful night in Vancouver.

Planning To Stay In Pittsburgh

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review,

New Penguins owner Jim Balsillie today told the state Gaming Control Board he intends to keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh. He said he'll do so as long as there's a solid plan for a new arena. "The commitment is there on the presumption you can come through with a viable (arena) plan agreement, yes," he said in response to a question from board member Mary Colins, who asked Balsillie point bank whether he'll keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh if the Pens' partner, Isle of Capri Casinos, doesn't win a slots license next week.

The Greatest Maple Leaf

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Another fine submission by KK member and fellow blogger Joe Pelletier. Who is the greatest Toronto Maple Leaf of all time? Not an easy question, is it? If you were to ask 10 different people you'd come up with 10 different fans. This is not as big a problem for other organizations in the National Hockey League. Lets first examine the other "Original Six" teams. The Boston Bruins have had a lot of greats but none better than arguably the game's greatest in Bobby Orr. Same can be said about the Detroit Red Wings with Gordie Howe (although Steve Yzerman could be 1a easily) and the Chicago Blackhawks with Bobby Hull. The Montreal Canadiens have had more greats than anybody but no one will ever be able to displace Maurice "Rocket" Richard from a top the all time list. The New York Rangers are the only other Original Six team where the best player of all time is debatable, although the pool to pick from up is noticeably smaller. Modern fans will tell you Mark Messier, older fans will tell you Jean Ratelle or Rod Gilbert, historians will tell you about Frank Boucher and the Cook brothers Bill and Bun. Eddie Giacomin would get the popular vote.

Dman Blogs Too

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the National Post,

Tampa's head coach John Tortorella says Janik is a player the Lightning "are looking to develop" and he believes that, even with all the rookie mistakes he has made in this his first full NHL season, Janik has "played some good hockey." The 26-year-old Massachusetts native is, then, a work-in-progress. What Tortorella apparently does not know is that the young blueliner is an all-star in the blogosphere. "I don't even know how to get into blogs," Tortorella growls. "I don't do any e-mails. I don't do any of that stuff."
