Waiting For The Day

As a hockey fan I am waiting for the day: -when a great play has just been made and I don't have to find the ref on TV to see if his arm is raised. -Datsyuk involved in a shootout. -A Bobby Baun style hip check at the blueline, and another and another. -A 5 on 3 goal with a stick to stick to stick goal. -When the NHL removes the coincidental penalty call. -The Red Wings actually admit they are not selling out all of their home games. -A goalie brawl. -Jaques Demers tossing his glasses on the ice again. -An update on 'Vladdy'. -Brett Hull in the studio at OLN. -Don Cherry interviewing Alex Ovechkin. -The AVS TV play by play man giving credit to the other team. -A new design for the Zamboni. -Stan Fischler and Bob Goodenow have lunch together.

Karmanos On The NHL

Peter Karmanos was driving around in his car and out of the blue called in to WXYT radio in Detroit. The topic was how is the NHL doing, etc.... Karmanos said the NHL is very happy with the move to OLN. ESPN only cares about promoting themselves while OLN is concerned about promoting the NHL. ESPN tried to low-ball the NHL and OLN outbid them by $50 million. ESPN only cares about themselves, not the sport itself. He said talk of the NHL players not liking the new rules is false. The players love the new rules and the excitement it generates. Look at the Center Ice package, all the games are top notch and keep you glued to the TV. The league is playing to 92% capacity and fans are loving the game....then his cell died, may continue conversation later... update 409pm, Back on, he said he is very surprised about his team, thought they would be ok but is very surprised about the start they have enjoyed. Karmanos was asked about the Fedorov trade, is this type of trade going to happen more often. He said if a big salary player is not performing up to expectations and another team feels a change of scenery may help him, then a trade will be made. He expects more of these types of trades to happen and says over the next few years, the talent pool will be spread out over the whole NHL.

Will Records Be Broken

It's hard to find anyone who doesn't appreciate the increased offence created in the revamped National Hockey League. However, just like every other rash judgment about the new NHL, the sudden prognostications about a return to 80s-style record-book rewriting may be a tad premature. Shouldn't we wait at least half a season before rendering a verdict on the realities of the game? (After all, it's impossible to avoid the TV or talk-radio pundits who predict that the game will be called differently as the schedule progresses).

Whatever Yzerman Wants

It's never easy watching legends perform with a dwindling reserve of skill and will, squeezing every last drop until nothing is left but fond memories. And you never want their final days to cross the line into pity, or worse, egotism. Steve Yzerman hasn't played much this season because of a temperamental groin, but when he has played it's as though he's off-limits to checks from opponents. Nobody comes near him. It's reminiscent of Wayne Gretzky's last season. Don't hit him. Don't hurt him. Don't deny him what many consider the right to end a great career on his own timetable under his own terms.

Crosby Mania

Collectors of sports memorabilia converged on Malton this weekend, displaying helmets, bobble heads, jerseys, and more trading cards than you could shake a game-used Titan signed by Gretzky at. The Next One, Sidney Crosby, was, in fact, everywhere. Dozens of cards are available from his Rimouski Oceanic days, not to mention the Team Canada cardboard cut-outs and framed and signed magazine photos. They were Crosby-mad at the International Centre all weekend, all of them gathered together for the Sport Card and Memorabilia Expo, touted as North America's largest hockey collectible event.

Suit Against Kocur Dropped

A legal battle between the owners of Joe & Lewie's Penalty Box and a former manager who sued the bar ended in a draw Tuesday when everyone agreed to drop their lawsuits. "I just want it over," Wanda Richardson told Genesee Circuit Judge Judith A. Fullerton regarding her suit against the bar. "I didn't intend to become famous overnight. This is not what I wanted." In her lawsuit, Richardson claimed that the owners condoned public nudity and sex involving waitresses and customers at the sports bar.

Brooks will match dollars raised from NHL / NHLPA Katrina Relief Game-Worn Jersey Auction The National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players' Association have jointly selected Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation as the official children's charity of the NHL and NHLPA. The league-wide alliance will include players from all 30 NHL Member Clubs and utilize the League and Players' Association's full platform of marketing resources.more

Thrashers Game Picking Up

After a terrible start, the Atlanta Thrashers are starting to show some life, and that's good to see. A big reason is that Ilya Kovalchuk is finding the net. He has six goals and two assists in his last three games, all wins for Atlanta. Kovalchuk is similar to Capitals rookie Alexander Ovechkin -- they're both big, streaky scorers who create plays and make things happen.

Grow Up Avery

Sean Avery thinks the National Hockey League is out to get him. He's convinced there are people in the league's head office who spend their entire day following his every on-ice move while scheming up ways to get him in trouble. Why would they do this? According to Avery, the Los Angeles Kings resident squawker, it's because he's an easy target.
