Stick To Black & White Rules

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Windsor Star,

Last season, defenceman Sean Hill was suspended 25 games by the league after testing positive for steroids.

For his attack on Moore’s brother, Bertuzzi - like Shore a player with a history of violence - missed only 20 games.

In other words, in a span of more than 70 years, not much has changed when it comes to the NHL disciplining its violent offenders.

Hockey remains the only sport where the rules vary as the game progresses. Penalties in football and fouls in basketball are called the same way no matter how much time remains on the clock.

“Make the rules black and white and enforce them as they are written,” is Moore’s challenge to the NHL.

The Same Pronger

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Vancouver Province,

All the guy does is play 28 minutes a night until the playoffs. Then he really gets to work and he kicks it up a notch. He always gets better as the season goes along and his team, no matter what team he plays for, always has a chance to do something in the post-season. He’s so good and has been for so long, he’s just expected to be great every night, every year with no fanfare, unless it’s provided by the opposing crowd.

“He’s been terrific this year again,” says Ducks GM Brian Burke of the defenceman he landed from Edmonton 18 months ago to make a Cup in Anaheim last year a reality. “He’s stepped into the leadership void left by (Scott Niedermayer’s) loss and filled it nicely. He’s always steady, great every night ... just terrific.”

Everyone Likes Comrie

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,

The Senators joined the New York Islanders winger for dinner Tuesday night because they apparently really do like him and not because there might have been a chance to see Comrie’s squeeze, singer/clothes designer/teen idol Hilary Duff.

“I’ve got a lot of friends in the NHL now,” joked Comrie, who made the Islanders his fifth NHL organization in seven years when he signed here as a free agent during the summer.

The Next, Next One?

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Lynn Zinser of the New York Times,

“There are a lot of Next Ones,” said David Andrews, chief executive of the American Hockey League, the N.H.L.’s top minor league. “And that’s not to say John Tavares isn’t. But there are 200 first- and second-round draft picks in the A.H.L., and none of them thought they were going to play in the American Hockey League.”

For now, Tavares deals with his fame by staying in a protective circle formed by his team, his coach and his family. His father, Joe, and mother, Barbara, and his two younger sisters make the drive from their hometown, Oakville, for most of Oshawa’s games.

Waddell Takes Advantage Of Thrashers Skill

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,

Holik said Hartley also wanted the Thrashers to play that crash-and-bang style and the early results were even worse than the Leafs’.

“That takes a lot out of you,” he said. “Our team didn’t have [the size]. We don’t have the biggest team, but we’re a skating team, so the biggest thing for us is puck control.”

Now, instead of asking talents such as Ilya Kovalchuk to dump the puck into the offensive zone and try to get it back, the Thrashers carry the puck a lot more. Waddell also allows Kovalchuk, Marian Hossa and the other forwards to freelance more on offence.

Stop Running - You’ve Been Arrested

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the AP via the NY Post,

Chicago Blackhawks forward Tuomo Ruutu was mistakenly arrested and detained briefly as a suspect in a robbery attempt in a Chicago suburb, according to authorities.

Bensenville police arrested the 24-year-old Ruutu on Wednesday because he matched the description of a robbery suspect, said Bensenville Village Manager James Johnson.

“He met the initial description,” Johnson said. “This was just an unfortunate coincidence.”

Ruutu, dressed in a black team sweat suit and black cap, told police he was out for a short jog after team practice at Edge Ice Arena, Johnson said.

Here Come The Blackhawks

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Tim Sassone of the Chicago Daily Herald,

Fans of the Blackhawks must be pinching themselves, trying to make sure this is all real.

Suddenly, the Hawks matter again.

There’s an entertaining team on the ice led by budding superstars Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews….

It’s time to leave in the past what has happened the last decade. The year Alpo Suhonen coached the team, Mike Smith’s run as GM, and players such as Alexander Karpovtsev and Boris Mironov cluttering up the ice are just bad memories now.

Bonk Finds Goal Scoring Touch

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Tennessean,

The 13-year veteran leads the Predators with nine goals, and though the season is still young, Bonk is somewhat surprisingly on pace for the best goal-scoring year of his career.

His offensive output has been a big boost to a team that lost a bundle of firepower during the offseason, and he’s producing even though he spends most of his time on a checking line with Jerred Smithson and Jed Ortmeyer.

“It’s hard to say why — they’re just going in for me,’’ Bonk said with a characteristic shrug. “Sometimes you need 100 chances to score one. Right now it seems like everything goes in.’‘

Oh Those Rumors!

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Rich Hammond at Inside the Kings,

I typically dislike commenting on rumors, because anyone can start them without naming sources and 99 percent of published rumors turn out to be exaggerated or just simply B.S. I don’t know the gentleman who wrote the FoxSports.com piece about Lombardi being on the hot seat, and I’m certainly not going to question his motives or sources. And given where the Kings stand—that would be last place in the conference—I suppose it’s fair to question whether Dean Lombardi SHOULD be on the hot seat. Any GM whose team is at the bottom of the conference is going to come under some scrutiny.

I would be completely stunned if Lombardi got fired this year, even if the Kings finished in last place.

Chico Resch- Author

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Examiner,

Resch, who resides in Lyndhurst during the hockey season, signed copies of his new book, “Chico Resch’s Tales from the Devils Ice,” which he penned with Holmdel-native Michael Kerwick….

Donna Stralkus, a Devils fan from East Brunswick, said she is eager to read Resch’s book.

“I’m interested in the locker room stories and the stuff you don’t catch on the sports pages,” she said.

Kerwick said that the book is an inside look at the Devils team from the perspective of a former player who was with the team during its first four years in the Garden State.

“It’s a collection of stories from Chico’s time with the Devils to his times announcing Devils games, and all of the games in between,” he said.
