Primeau May Be Out For The Season

There is fear in Philadelphia that Flyers captain Keith Primeau may miss the entire season. It has now been one month since he was elbowed in the jaw by the infamous Alexander Perezhogin of the Montreal Canadiens and suffered another concussion. If the fears are realized, the loss to the Flyers would be monumental.

Draper Frustrated With Only 1 Goal

Sports fans have heard of the Sports Illustrated cover jinx, but could there also be a Detroit Red Wings media guide cover jinx? If so, then Kris Draper might be the first victim. Draper graces the front of the guide this season as a tribute to his breakout performance in 2003-04, when the career checking-line center scored a career-high 24 goals and won the Selke Trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward. "I'm not going to sit here and make excuses for not chipping in offensively," Draper said. "Come on, I got one goal. There's no reason why I should only have that. I'm not putting pressure on myself to score, but it's something I want to do to help this team."

Malik Shootout Goal

Marek Malik had a fantastic shootout goal tonight. As you can see, he pushed the puck between his legs and fired the shot from there. He was the 15th shooter for the Rangers and it was the winning goal against Washington. Watch the video too. update 9:45am. Monday Nov. 28th, I have made this a sticky today. Getting a huge amount of hits from search engines, by placing it at the top of the page, it will make it easier for first time visitors to find.

NHL Missed A Chance To Showcase The Game

The NHL explanation in my mind just doesn't cut it, they used the old excuse "the games were scheduled well in advance........" Hey guys, this is 2005, anything is possible and you should have planned to switch to this game a month ago. from the NY Times (Sunday edition),

The National Hockey League's version of Bird and Magic -Sidney Crosby of the Penguins and Alexander Ovechkin of the Capitals - faced each other for the first time as professionals on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh. For a league starved for attention after the cancellation of the 2004-5 season, the game was the kind of marquee matchup that should have had a national audience. But the league did not ensure that a wide audience could see the game. OLN, in its first season as the N.H.L.'s cable television-rights holder, was locked into the Tampa Bay-Philadelphia game. "I don't think we missed an opportunity," Adam Acone, the N.H.L. vice president for broadcasting and programming, said Wednesday. "And OLN did a very good job of covering the game."

Cherry Stands Up For NHL Players

Dick Pound has now incurred the wrath of Don Cherry. On Saturday's edition of Hockey Night in Canada, Cherry lent his voice to the debate. "Gary Bettman has to stand up and make this guy (Pound) prove it. Take him to court, sue him, make him prove it. He can't come out and say something like that about our guys. We are the cleanest sport in the world," Cherry said. "Gary [better address it] because it's in the headlines ... make this guy prove it or sue him."

Executives in the NHL continue to say the league doesn't have a problem with performance-enhancing drugs (ever hear of Sudies, fellas?) even though people like anti-doping czar Dick Pound beg to differ. Our question is this: if the NHL hasn't been conducting routine drug testing until this year, how would they know?

No Ice Time For Fighters

The new NHL has laid a beating on the league's enforcers. In fact, several of the league's top heavyweights from the 2003-04 season, when mucking was mandatory, have punched out for good. They're either completely out of the game or they've dropped down to the minors to drop their gloves. Of the NHL's 13 most frequent fighters from 2003-04, only two — Ottawa's Chris Neil and Chicago's Matthew Barnaby — are playing significant roles today in a league that puts a much larger premium on fast feet than fast hands.

The latest hot spots are Phoenix-Anaheim where Ducks' enforcer Todd Fedoruk received a three-game suspension for his blindside charge on Petr Nedved, and Nashville-Los Angeles, where things got ugly after Darcy Hordichuk jumped Sean (The Turtle) Avery. more

Saskin Approval A Joke

Ted Saskin has been officially approved as executive director of the NHL players' association. But the Kings never voted, which led to some confusion and frustration Friday. "Well, that's a joke," forward Sean Avery said when informed of the announcement. "If that's a vote, it's not a thorough vote, because the L.A. Kings didn't vote," Jeremy Roenick said. A news release from the NHLPA said that "a majority of the eligible votes" had been received and that 85 percent of the votes received were in favor of Saskin's election. But the union acknowledged that not all player representatives turned in votes. The Kings' Mattias Norstrom did not submit a vote on behalf of the Kings, and although the union will continue to accept votes until Dec. 16, Norstrom said the Kings do not intend to vote any time soon. Instead, the Kings are following a lawsuit filed with the U.S. National Labor Relations Board on behalf of a group led by former Kings forward Trent Klatt, which seeks to have the election deemed illegal.

Legace Strains MCL

Red Wings goaltender Manny Legace suffered a sprained left knee late in the first period Friday afternoon and won't dress tonight when the Wings play at San Jose. "I just strained my MCL," Legace said. Legace sprained the same knee on Nov. 1 against Chicago when Matthew Barnaby tumbled on top of him, but trainer Piet Van Zant said the two injuries are unrelated. Van Zant said there was no swelling and that Legace likely won't have to undergo an MRI. It all depends on the next few days.
