Charles Wang in the Spotlight

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

Newsday.com published a story last night in which a former associate of NY Islanders’ owner Charles Wang alleges that Wang “personally directed improper accounting” at Computer Associates (CA) Inc., going back to 1987.

It’s a complicated story at first glance but fortunately Eric McErlain explains the background a bit clearer at AOL Fanhouse:

You could be excused these days if it seems to take something of a scorecard to determine just how many NHL owners might be in trouble with the law. Now it’s time for New York Islanders owner Charles Wang to reluctantly step into the spotlight.

Though many have forgotten, Wang didn’t buy the Islanders by himself in 2000. Rather, he did it with Sanjay Kumar, the protege that succeeded him as CEO of Computer Associates (CA) that same year. But the happy times didn’t last.

Scotty With The Cup

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

When the Stanley Cup arrives at Scotty Bowman’s comfortable home outside Buffalo, the greatest coach of all time is in the shower after an early-morning round of golf with his son, Stan….

Apart from the passing of Bowman’s beloved yellow Labrador retriever, Chumley, little has changed in the backyard—the hammock in the same place; the table on which the Cup will rest for much of the day is the same.

If the Cup were able to speak, it might offer a sigh of relief and say, “Ah, it’s good to be home.”

Three Teams To Watch

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Mike Brophy of the Hockey News,

And if you are anything like me, these three teams are worth keeping an eye on:

Los Angeles Kings
Maybe it’s because I believe GM Dean Lombardi is on the right track, but I just hope ownership in Los Angeles has patience and allows Lombardi to follow through on building a team I believe is very close to being a competitor.

read on and the other teams are Edmonton and Phoenix…

Sundin Free To Do What He Wants

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Mike Zeisberger of the Toronto Sun,

The longer the process continues to drag out, the more Sundin will be accused of being “selfish” by fans and various media members alike for making teams such as the Leafs, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Vancouver Canucks and Montreal Canadiens wait as he attempts to make up his mind.

Such allegations have been front and centre throughout the summer.

They also don’t make much sense.

How is Sundin “selfish?” He is a free agent. He is the property of no one. And if there are any physical ailments, it only adds to the difficulty for the future Hall of Famer of finding the bottom line.

In any event, to claim Sundin is holding teams for ransom is silly. He owes them nothing even if, in the case of the Canucks, a whopping two-year, $20-million US deal was shoved in front of him.

more about Sundin…

added 12:00pm, via the CBC,

“I will not make up my mind before the season starts,” Sundin said at a news conference in Stockholm. “That’s how I feel right now. Others have started playing in the middle of the season. If I would feel like retiring, I would say it.”

Sundin was speaking at an event to announce his contract as a spokesperson for PokerStars.com. He will play in charity events for the company.

Ducks Need Cap Relief To Sign Selanne

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Dan Wood of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

“There has been no change in our situation,” Ducks general manager Brian Burke said Tuesday. “We’re still evaluating different options. We’re not in position to do anything with Teemu at this point in time. That may change. We’ll see.”

The issues are no different than they have been for nearly two months, with the Ducks more than $2 million over the NHL’s $56.7 million salary cap. Until they find a way to clear that hurdle, the Ducks can’t sign Selanne.

Instant Rink

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from East Aurora New York,

After months, actually years of hard work by local residents trying to make the dream of creating a venue for local East Aurora youth a reality, the time has finally arrived.

The Aurora Ice Association has obtained possesion of the actual rink and that was used for the Winter Classic event held at Ralph Wilson Stadium on January 1st, 2008 between the Buffalo Sabres and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

thanks to Empty Netters for the pointer and they were wondering if Dan Craig was included in the deal?

Helmets For Coaches While On The Ice

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the CBC,

Minor hockey coaches in Calgary now have to wear helmets on the ice during practices after a coach slipped and suffered a brain hemorrhage.

Goalie coach Troy Williams fell while skating backwards last winter at his son’s hockey practice.

“He was clearing pucks from behind the net and he was skating backwards and just the way he shot the puck, he just went straight back,” recalled his wife Tracy on Tuesday.

Troy Williams fractured his skull and suffered a brain hemorrhage, a potentially fatal injury. He recovered, but still suffers headaches.

Chris Bourque Determined To Play For Capitals

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Phil Stacey of the Salem News,

With four games of NHL experience already on his hockey resume, Chris Bourque is looking to considerably add to that total during the upcoming season….

“I feel like I can compete in the NHL. It’s up to me whether or not I can make that happen (in camp),” said Bourque, who has spent the last three seasons playing in Washington’s American Hockey League affiliate in Hershey, Pa., where he had 28 goals and 63 points for the Bears last year.

“I don’t want to go back to the AHL. No knock on Hershey, but that’s not where I want to be. My main focus is on making the big team.”

Nothing To Say Here Gramps:  Overloaded On The Blue Line Too

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

The Diggers are waking up and the FNG is keeping pace.

Dave Dye, while not technically “new” (he’s been covering MSU and other sports for the News for nearly two decades) has reported for duty as the Wing bubba at the Detroit News.  And if he keeps up this pace, he’ll be getting a call from Khan(!) soon.  Something about expectations of mediocrity.

An article and a blog entry.  In the hypothetical words of Ansar…“Slowwww down big boy. It’s early.”
