via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

The Penguins have lost free-agent right winger Marian Hossa to Detroit.

Team officials are believed to have been informed this morning that he will not re-sign.

Terms of Hossa’s contract were not immediately known, but the Red Wings are believed to have been offering a shorter-term contract than most other clubs.

It has been confirmed to me by Kristian Huselius’ agent, Don Meehan, that the Wild is pursuing the free-agent left wing and the two sides will speak again Wednesday. Huselius has got a ton of skill and was nearly traded to Minnesota in 2005-06.

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Bruce Dowbiggin at the Calgary Herald,

It’s July 1—free-agent liberation day—and agent J.P. Barry rolls through the door of his Calgary office at Creative Artists Agency. The burly Barry has already had a full morning—and the clock has not even hit the magic 10 a.m. opener for offers and signings.

The New Blue Jackets

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Puck-rakers,

Raffi Torres is a badass. Check out YouTube. Well, first watch the hysterical spoof from The Daily Show that involved Torres, but then watch Torres’ hits. This guy had 27 goals two seasons ago.

You know who Torres is? He’s a faster-skating Ryan Malone without the public relations help provided by the Stanley Cup Finals. Malone had the eyes of the hockey world on him during the Penguins’ Cup run, and he was awesome. His stock soared. That was Torres just two Cups previous. Big, nasty, feels no pain and lives, breathes and sleeps hockey.
