Top Goaltenders Of The Decade

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Spector at Fox Sports,

The National Hockey League has witnessed some tremendous performances by superstar goaltenders and rising stars. Here’s a look at the decade’s top 10 NHL netminders:

10. Tim Thomas: “The Tank” spent the first half of this decade bouncing between the AHL and Europe but by the end of this decade the Boston Bruins had a late-blooming star in the 35-year-old Thomas. His performance between the pipes played a huge part in the Bruins’ emergence as a playoff team over the past two years.

A Two Week Injury For Orpik

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Sam Kasan of PittsburghPenguins.com,

Another day, another injury. Or so it seems for the Penguins these days.

In the team’s most recent health setback, it was announced Thursday that defenseman Brooks Orpik will be out of the lineup for the next two weeks with a lower-body injury.

“He’s got a two-week injury, lower body,” head coach Dan Bylsma said. “We were excited that he was doing better than we feared. He’s doing well. We got some good news and he’ll hopefully be around 14 days.”

Watching At Practice

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

via Aaron Portzline of Puck-rakers,

I’ve seen my share of hockey practices over the last 10 seasons or so, but I’ve never seen this.

Rather than have a film session in the dressing room and then head out for an on-ice practice, the Blue Jackets are mixing the two this morning in the wake of a 9-1 drubbing by the Red Wings on Wednesday.

A large TV was wheeled out to where the tunnel comes into the bench. After skating for 20 minutes or so, the players were brought over to watch highlights (lowlights?) from the Red Wings game.

It was an attentive audience.

Osgood, Maltby Out….Jimmah, Miller In

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

More of the Flu.

Wings goalie Chris Osgood and forward Kirk Maltby have the flu and will miss Thursday night’s game against the Vancouver Canucks at Joe Louis Arena.

Jimmy Howard, who was in goal in Wednesday night’s 9-1 victory over Columbus, will start against the Canucks. His backup will be Daniel Larsson, who was called up from Grand Rapids.

Drew Miller, picked up on waivers Wednesday, will replace Maltby on the fourth line with Justin Abdelkader and Brad May.

Rewriting The NHLPA Constitution

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Darren Dreger of TSN,

A committee has been formed to review and very likely rewrite the National Hockey League PA’s constitution.

Dallar Stars goaltender Marty Turco, Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas, along with Florida Panthers forward Dominic Moore and Buffalo’s Steve Montador have been appointed by the PA’s executive board to conduct a thorough study of the unions constitution, as well as determine any necessary changes.

Sources say the group of four will begin their work in the very near future, a project one NHL player says will be the first step in the rebuilding of a strong union.

Is The End Near? Not So Fast

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

The Red Wings have earned 11 out of a possible 14 points.  Won four of their last five games outright.  Allowed more than 1 goal in one of those games.  A win tonite vaults them into 6th in the conference.  And yet…

But the slide theory is gaining traction in Detroit largely from within, combined with a critical view of the standings.

That’s Tony Gallagher of the Vancouver Province.  By and large? It’s an even-handed article. It’s hard to fault any writer who’s reacting to Jimmy D.

Huet Finding His Game

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Tim Sassone of Between The Circles,

Huet appears to have turned things around after his horrendous start.

Since that ugly loss to Dallas on Oct. 17, Huet has gone 5-2, allowing only 11 goals. And in those two losses, the Hawks were shutout 2-0 at Nashville and lost 3-1 at Phoenix.

Huet has improved his goals-against average to 2.21 and brought his save percentage back over .900 at .901 from a low of .844.

“I feel loose, ready to compete every night and help play the best we can and win some games,” Huet said following Wednesday’s 3-2 win over the Avalanche in a shootout.
