Gaborik Talks

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,

“I have one year left on my contract. That’s all I’m thinking about. I’m going to leave everything out there, work hard and enjoy it. And I’m going to try the best I can to help the team win this year like I’ve done always.”

Told that sounds like he has decided to play out the final year of his contract and leave as a free agent, Gaborik said, “I’m not saying I’m leaving. I’m not saying I’m staying. I’m saying I have one year left on my contract. I’m leaving it up to the Wild and my agent to discuss it. But I want to be left out of it.

“I like it here. Of course, it’s been great times and experiences here. But I still have one more year on my contract. I want to be respected that I still have one year left, and I want to just focus on this year and just try to play the best I can. That’s how it is. I don’t want to think about my contract right now, and I don’t want to be put in a position where I have to talk about it.”

Loonie Talk

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Calgary Herald,

In any event, the decline in the loonie is great news if Canadians have a product Americans want (wonder what that might be?) that they can now buy at it lower price. But it is not a good omen for industries that get a bounce from parity between the dollars.

Exhibit A for those businesses that crave a dollar at par would be the National Hockey League. With 31 per cent of league ticket revenues reportedly coming from Canada last season, even a five-cent drop in the dollar is a major issue. As well, NHL teams doing business in Canadian dollars and paying out salaries and benefits in American greenbacks don’t want any decrease in the dollar. Even a drop of five cents on Miikka Kiprusoff’s $8.5 million salary costs Calgary an extra $425,000.

Outdoor Game In Montreal In Very Early Talks

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette via the National Post,

The Montreal Canadiens have included a 2009 game at Olympic Stadium as one of their centennial projects, though the match is far from being confirmed….

“A game (at the Big O) is a project that we’ve discussed with the RIO,” Canadiens vice-president Donald Beauchamp said Wednesday of talks the club has had with the stadium’s provincial-government landlord. “That’s as far as the project has gone.”

Pressing Questions

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Allan Muir at Sports Illustrated:

Dallas Stars: Cup contenders or kidding themselves?

Heading into last season, the obvious question was, “Can this team compete for a playoff spot?” At the time, it was touch and go. The core was graying and burdened by a legacy of recent postseason failures that suggested their best days were a decade behind them.

And now?

Future of Hockey Moms

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

Sarah Palin and the phrase “Hockey Mom”  may have changed the future of the sport.  Greg Hardy at CBS Sports SPiN looks a bit closer at the idea, and he’s even written volume 1 of his Futurepedia, a sports almanac to be published in 2057.

2013: The Ford Motor Co. shows its first quarterly profit in years thanks to a hybrid car aimed at the Hockey Mom demographic: a Minivan/Zamboni conversion that runs on Tim Horton’s decaffeinated coffee.

2014: The North American Hockey Moms Association votes that their official beverage will be “Mother Puckers” hard lemonade, which is sold exclusively at Mano’s Grill and Brewhouse in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Though you probably wouldn’t want to take home any of the Hockey Moms you meet there after 11 p.m.

2015: In just one example of how eager the world is to hop on the Hockey Mom bandwagon, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman resigns his post so he can get a sex change operation.

Pat Jablonski Recovering From Surfing Accident

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From the Tampa Bay Lightning, this statement:

Former Lightning goalie Pat Jablonski suffered two broken vertebrae in a body surfing accident off Anna Maria Island this past Sunday. Jablonski was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital on Monday evening and underwent surgery on Tuesday to relieve pressure on a pinched spinal cord. The post-surgical prognosis is very good and Jablonski hopes to return home later this week. In fact, he has already been walking this morning.[...]

“I want to thank everyone for their well wishes, thoughts and prayers during what has been perhaps the scariest time of my life,” Jablonski said

Charles Wang in the Spotlight

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

Newsday.com published a story last night in which a former associate of NY Islanders’ owner Charles Wang alleges that Wang “personally directed improper accounting” at Computer Associates (CA) Inc., going back to 1987.

It’s a complicated story at first glance but fortunately Eric McErlain explains the background a bit clearer at AOL Fanhouse:

You could be excused these days if it seems to take something of a scorecard to determine just how many NHL owners might be in trouble with the law. Now it’s time for New York Islanders owner Charles Wang to reluctantly step into the spotlight.

Though many have forgotten, Wang didn’t buy the Islanders by himself in 2000. Rather, he did it with Sanjay Kumar, the protege that succeeded him as CEO of Computer Associates (CA) that same year. But the happy times didn’t last.
