Afternoon Line

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

They have not even tendered an offer yet, and would-be owners of the Coyotes already are yapping about having some “home” games in Saskatoon.

Once that news got out, the salivating again began north of the border.

This is, plain and simple, an idiotic idea. What a great way to alienate even more fans, especially season ticket holders. The bottom line is to bring more fans into the fold, not drive them away. For a franchise that prides itself on being fan-friendly, this scheme ranks with the worst of them.

The Board of Governors should squash this one in rapid fashion.

Hockey Fan Beauty Pageant? Uh Oh!

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

The NHL Arena is having a midsummer tournament…

imageThe Pageant is an annual tournament of ours asking hockey fans from around the world to post a picture of themselves in an attempt to declare the best looking male and female fans on the planet… well really what it is, is a fun and friendly ice-breaker for fans to meet one another during a long and arduous offseason.

If you would like to enter this contest, simply register up at The NHL Arena, go to your favorite teams’ subforum, locate their Chapter of fans and post a photo of themselves (open to both guys and girls).

Hmmm.  A hockey fan beauty pageant might be a scary thing to some people, but we know better: Just have to flash a little of that hockey attitude and who could resist any of y’all? smile

(Alas, the dog days of summer…. gotta pass the time somehow!)

Canes Buy Out Kaberle Contract

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the Hurricanes have bought out the remaining year of defenseman Frantisek Kaberle’s contract. Kaberle was slated to make $2.2 million in 2009-10, but will now collect two-thirds ($1,467,400) of that amount over the next two seasons.

“This move is part of our effort to restructure the Hurricanes’ defense to become bigger and more physical,” said Rutherford. “We thank Frank for his contributions to the Hurricanes, especially the game-winning goal in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final in 2006.”

All Alexander Ovechkin

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Russia Today,

RT: You did really well in that series (Pens/Caps)… going into the final game in front of your home crowd it must have been very disappointing to go 5-0 down in the first period?

A.O.: Well, yeah, of course it’s disappointing, especially when we play at home, in our building, for our fans. I didn’t score in my first shift, with a breakaway chance… you know, if I scored one goal maybe it would have been a different game.

RT: Do you think these series have gone any closer to say who is a better hockey player? I mean, Aleksander Ovechkin or Sydney Crosby?

A.O.: Evgeny Malkin

Ducks Name Pete Peeters Goaltending Consultant

Blog: Hockey News Wire By Paul

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has named Pete Peeters goaltending consultant.

“Pete Peeters has a proven track record as one of the top goaltending consultants in the league,” said Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray. “We are pleased to announce he’s joined the team.”

Peeters, 51 (8/17/57), joins the Ducks after having served as the Edmonton Oilers’ goaltending coach for the last eight seasons. During his tenure, he helped Dwayne Roloson backstop the Oilers to a Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2006. Prior to joining Edmonton, Peeters spent four seasons as the goaltending coach for the Winnipeg Jets and Phoenix Coyotes from 1993-97.

The Blackhawks Movie

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Mike Kiley of Blackhawks Confidential at ChicagoNow,

I see Alec Baldwin in the Tallon role, Steve Buscemi as McDonough, SpongeBob Squarepants as Rocky Wirtz, Jason Alexander as Stan Bowman, Don Rickles as Scotty Bowman (is Rickles still alive? wouldn’t matter with the limited Scotty dialogue), Burt Reynolds (get me makeup) as coach Joel Quenneville, a bearded Colin Farrell as a very angry Irish kind of revolutionary Czech playing Martin Havlat and a curly-wigged Will Ferrell replicating Marian Hossa.

So years from now, two or three Jonathan Toews-led championships down the road, you will have an Oliver Stone-type movie version offering the dark details of how Tallon got his career misconduct penalty and the affair will assume the nefarious overtones of “Who Killed Cock Robin,” snuggling into Hawks history alongside Reay’s Yuletide log roll.
