Rocker Mark Smith
12/16/05 at 02:08 PM ET | Comments (0)
from the Mercury News,
Mark Smith lives in two worlds. And they were about to collide. Capping a week in which the high-energy forward had the first two-goal game in his NHL career, here was '60s music icon Neil Young moving through the Sharks' locker room last weekend, looking for Smith -- and telling any player within earshot, ``You guys rock'' -- after San Jose's 4-3 victory over Carolina. In truth, Smith does rock -- on stages, guitar in hand.read on

Meeting The Great One
12/16/05 at 02:04 PM ET | Comments (0)
from the blog of Elisha Cuthbert via NHL.com,
I don't know how many people out there have gotten the chance to see "The Great One", Wayne Gretzky, in person? And up until last weekend I hadn't either. OH! But now, I'm officially in the group. Let me set the scene for everyone: It was a cold, bitter-cold Toronto night. The Leafs had just lost their strong battle for a victory against the ever-intriguing L.A. Kings. There I was, not alone mind you -- I had my beautiful sister on the left -- and sadly an obnoxious fan on the right. Who would have thought, losing my hearing in the right ear would hinder me later that night?more
She also mentions the fact that she passes by 'a certain player' in the bowels of the Air Canada Centre after a game between the Kings and Maple Leafs. That 'certain player' is most likely Sean Avery, her rumored boyfriend. We have included photographic evidence to prove it, even though it looks like Cuthbert is holding hands with a 'What's the Story (Morning Glory)' era Liam Gallagher.

The Big M & The Black Hawks
12/16/05 at 01:47 PM ET | Comments (0)
from the Toronto Star,
A whim of fate decreed that Frank Mahovlich should score his 250th goal as a Leaf, a few hours after funeral services for the man who almost spent a million bucks to make him a Black Hawk. Not more than three or four persons actually knew the real story of what happened between the Leafs and Jim Norris, the night he bought the Big M for more money than ever was paid for one athlete. Because the main participants had been into the grape, following a shinny dinner, it was logical to shrug off the whole affair as an alcoholic publicity stunt.continued

Expensive Boards
12/16/05 at 01:31 PM ET | Comments (0)
from the Montreal Gazette,
Ever watch a Montreal Canadiens hockey game at the Bell Centre or on TV and wonder how much the advertising in and around the arena costs? You're right if you guessed big bucks, but you'll have to negotiate a deal with the team to know the cost. Because of confidentiality clauses in sponsorship contracts, the amount of money the privately owned Canadiens collect to sell their brand to corporate advertisers each season is a well-kept secret. But here's a figure that hints at the money involved: The entry level fee for an ad on the boards surrounding the ice surface is a minimum of $300,000 a year.more

Bring It On
12/16/05 at 12:29 PM ET | Comments (0)
from the Edmonton Journal,
I want to see a hockey fight. A donnybrook. A brouhaha. How about a tilt, a set-to or some fisticuffs? I'd even settle for a skirmish, a tussle, a scuffle or a clash. Where are the haymakers, upper cuts and jabs? I pine for the days of Orr when scrapping was fighting, not what they were doing to fighting. I miss Dave Semenko, Dave Brown and Bob Probert. Not one of them would play more than five minutes a game in the NHL now. Yeah, I miss the fighters, but mostly I miss the fights.continued

Fans Suffer As Bruins Slide
12/16/05 at 11:41 AM ET | Comments (0)
from Gary Thorne of the Bangor Daily News,
It is being suggested that to inject life into the Bruins the next move will be the firing of coach Mike Sullivan. If that happens, he will be more the sacrificial lamb than the ineffective coach. There is a malaise that surrounds the Bruins and it has been there for some years. Perhaps it begins with ownership, Jeremy Jacobs and Delaware North Corp., that seems to react to the bottom line only. President Harry Sinden has done the bidding of the corporation for 17 seasons. He has a reputation of, let's say, being thrifty and seems to have little respect for the current players and the money they command.more

Pens Plan To Trap
12/16/05 at 11:14 AM ET | Comments (0)
from the Beaver County Times,
If nothing else, the image best reflects the changing state of the Pittsburgh Penguins: Mario Lemieux not only practiced the neutral zone trap Thursday, he endorsed the idea of playing it. If Lemieux, the champion of wide-open hockey, is willing to trap, then surely the rest of the Penguins must be, too. After all, they know the alternative, now that they've nearly frittered their season away: Play new coach Michel Therrien's way, or don't play at all. Even if a player wants out of town, it might be difficult to persuade another team to trade for him if he's not playing at all.read on

Sabres Rolling
12/16/05 at 10:10 AM ET | Comments (0)
from Kevin Allen of USA Today,
With the new NHL now about dazzling plays and scoring, the Buffalo Sabres don't have a single player among the NHL's top 75 scorers. With the new NHL about new faces and altered lineups, the Sabres had fewer changes than most teams entering the season. With the NHL now about high-profile No. 1 scoring lines, the Sabres essentially have three lines that make similar contributions. But the NHL is still about winning, and right now the Buffalo Sabres, taking 25 of their last 28 available points, are the NHL's hottest team.more

BOG Makes Needed Rule Tweaks
12/16/05 at 09:53 AM ET | Comments (0)
from Al Strachan of the Toronto Sun,
To deal with some minor problems that had cropped up in the shootout, the National Hockey League passed a couple of rules yesterday. All shootout shots are now subject to review to make sure that any goal is legal. In the past, some referee decisions on shootouts had not been considered reviewable. In cases of long shootouts, if a team has players unavailable because of injury and thereby qualifies to use its first shooter again, the opposing team also gets to go back to the top of its list, even if it has players who have not shot.read on

Lang Expects Fischer To Retire
12/16/05 at 09:24 AM ET | Comments (0)
from Mlive,
Detroit Red Wings center Robert Lang is one of Jiri Fischer's closest friends on the team, a fellow native of the Czech Republic. And like many others in the organization, Lang found it difficult to watch Fischer's emotional press conference on Monday. Lang is also bracing for the likelihood of another news conference in the not-so-distant future, one in which Fischer will be forced to declare that he cannot return to the game he loves because of his heart condition.more
