The Art Of Skate Sharpening
12/26/05 at 03:09 AM ET | Comments (0)
from the LA Daily News,
Today, at 35, Rick Garcia is simply known as Rico, blade sharpener for the Los Angeles Kings. He's been with the team for nearly a decade, and his zeal for the job is even stronger this year after he took a deep pay cut during last season's labor dispute. Blade sharpening begins as a trade and transforms into an art form. With experience comes style, and then the players call you maestro. But these manipulators of steel have to win the respect of a team before their technique can be fully mastered.more

No Respect For Leetch
12/26/05 at 03:01 AM ET | Comments (0)
from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,
The folks at USA Hockey must believe in the Biblical teaching of it is better to give than receive, because boy oh boy, let me tell you, did they ever conspire to give it to Brian Leetch this week... ...Shame on the people running the show for not recognizing that while all Americans are equals, some American hockey players are more equal than others. Shame on those in the administration for not understanding that Leetch — like Granato — had earned respect reserved for the most elite in their society.read on (reg. req.),

It Smells Bad
12/24/05 at 09:58 PM ET | Comments (0)
from the NY Times,
(Marvin) Miller pointed to the players union's eventual willingness to accept a salary cap and to Ted Saskin's controversial ascension to executive director of the union (he replaced Bob Goodenow). Saskin had been the union's senior director of business affairs and licensing. "The whole thing smells bad," Miller said. "It just has a very bad odor. You have a so-called senior adviser who takes the leading role in making one of the worst settlements imaginable and then becomes executive director of the union." Of the salary cap, Miller said: "I don't think it was necessary. All the signs were that the union, having come that far, they had more than a fighter's chance of prevailing. And when the tide turns like that, I get very suspicious of management's role in coercing the membership."read on

The Hockey Family

from the Union Leader,
On those cold, clear nights of deep winter, the perfect kind for taking out the garden hose and making ice on the driveway, Kyle McDonough finds his way back to his childhood. He finds himself reminiscing about the days when kids from all over town would converge on his house at the corner of Union and Arah streets for hockey games at the McDonough Gardens.continued

Refs Should Let Us Play
12/24/05 at 11:36 AM ET | Comments (0)
The Chicago Blackhawks held a 2-0 lead against the Wings with 39 seconds to play. They lost the game when Pavel Datsyuk scored with a 1/10 of a second left in OT. Marty Lapointe was not happy with the way the game was called, especially in overtime. I wonder if he will face a league reprimand for his comments. via the AP,
"The overtime calls hurt the game," Lapointe said. "It's a big game, a big rivalry. the refs should let us play. I guess this is the new NHL. To lose a game on a cheap penalty is not the way to play hockey."update 9:00am, from the Daily Herald,
“They (referees Eric Furlatt and Shane Heyer) can’t figure it out for themselves, so they’ve got to call Toronto,” Hawks captain Adrian Aucoin said. “They should start doing that every play because there seems to be too many question marks.”

A Different Kind Of Game In Russia
12/23/05 at 10:47 PM ET | Comments (0)
from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Rick Mrozik, a former Calgary Flames' farmhand who spent the lockout playing for the Edmonton Roadrunners, the Oilers' No. 1 farm team, decided he would try Russia last summer. Russia seemed like the land of opportunity, a chance to earn a major-league salary for the first time in his life. Russia wasn't the most attractive destination, but he was going to Moscow, which is better than playing in the hinterland, and he was going with goaltender Tyler Moss, a former minor-league teammate... ..."He must have hit me on just the right spot on the head because it knocked me out," said Mrozik. "From what I was told, I helicoptered in the air and landed face-first on the ice. They brought me to the locker room and lay me on the floor.read on plus an update on Owen Nolan...
