KK Road Trip To Columbus

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

I am happy to report KK will be updating live from the 2007 NHL Draft in Columbus.
I will be arriving in Columbus on Thursday so start looking for updates from there late afternoon.
Alanah will be holding down the Kompound and who knows, we just may be having a bit of fun.

I am looking forward to meeting the MSM that I have frequently pointed to, spoke with and interviewed.  The same holds true regarding many of the folks affiliated with all of the NHL teams.
As important, I anticipate meeting the large contingent of bloggers that are attending the event.  Who has the first round?
It should be a great experience and we look forward to giving you an inside look at the NHL Draft.

Nashville Players Waiting For Direction

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Allan Maki of the Globe and Mail,

The suspicion is that current owner Craig Leipold will slash the Predators’ payroll to its lowest point, roughly $33-million (U.S.), which could make for an anguished exit from Nashville.
Mason has heard the rumours. The fact he’s heard nothing else is worrisome.
“It started with the sale,” Mason said. “No one saw that coming.
“It was just one day - boom,” said Mason, who has been in touch with several teammates over the past few weeks. “We talk, but the only thing we know is what we hear [on television] or read [in newspapers]. We don’t know any more than you guys do. It just bugs me that nothing is being said.

Curtis Joseph Loves Toronto

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Toronto Sun,

For most of his illustrious career, the man known as Cujo has been the top dog between the pipes.
But the veteran goalie, who has been a starter for most of his playing days, admits that he would accept a supporting role if it meant donning the blue and white again.
“To be back here again? Ya, absolutely I would, for sure,” former Maple Leaf Curtis Joseph revealed during a phone interview last night.
Leafs officials have publicly stated that they would like to find a backup to “push” incumbent Andrew Raycroft, who endured an inconsistent roller-coaster season en route to tying Ed Belfour’s franchise mark for victories with 37.

Trotz Dealing With Detour

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Winnipeg Sun,

So how’s your off-season going so far, Barry Trotz?
“We’ve always had a road map of how we wanted to build our hockey team and try to win a Stanley Cup,” Trotz, the only head coach the Nashville Predators have ever known, said yesterday.
“Well, right now we have a little detour. It doesn’t mean we’re not going to get back on the main highway.”
A little detour? That’s like calling the Grand Canyon a pothole.
Then again, the knee-jerk reaction hasn’t been part of Trotz’s repertoire—how do you think he’s lasted 10 years in the NHL?

Lowe’s Open For Shopping Season

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Edmonton Sun,

“In the last two or three days the trade talk has really heated up,” said the under-the-gun, man-on-the-run Lowe.
“We’re probably making more calls than we’re getting. I guess via this public forum I can announce we are open for business.
“I can’t wait to get there,” the hyper Mr. Lowe said of the Columbus gathering.

Possible Gerber Destinations

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

While searching for a coach will be one of Murray’s top priorities, he will also try to deal G Martin Gerber before Friday’s draft. It’s believed before Muckler was fired, he was in talks with the Coyotes and Kings about a deal involving Gerber. The belief is the Coyotes are demanding that the Senators take D Derek Morris and his $3.9-million price tag for next season.

How To Keep Drury & Briere

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News,

The Sabres can trim by shopping Maxim Afinogenov and Jaroslav Spacek and saying goodbye to Teppo Numminen and rental Dainius Zubrus. Afinogenov, Spacek and Numminen made $8.825 million combined last season. Afinogenov and Spacek are scheduled to cost the Sabres $6.975 million next season. It’s too much for a team that was 16-7-3 without Afinogenov, 9-6-2 without Spacek and 7-4-1 without both.
My money’s on Drew Stafford.
Buffalo also needs to account for restricted free agents Nathan Paetsch, Derek Roy, Daniel Paille and Andrew Peters. Peters will gladly accept his 10 percent raise. And this doesn’t account for Clarke MacArthur and Patrick Kaleta, whose NHL salaries for next season are $1.125 million combined. The Sabres need a little more Kaleta and a little less Max, and they also need depth for the blue line.

Productive Meeting For JSG & Ducks

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the LA Times,

Meanwhile, the Ducks have stepped up their efforts to lock up goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere to a long-term deal. Both Burke and Giguere’s agent, Bob Sauve, said they had a productive meeting last week at Sauve’s office outside Montreal.
“We’ve since exchanged proposals,” Burke said. “I’d say things are going well. But it’s not done.”
Giguere is believed to be seeking at least $6 million a season. Sauve said the Ducks are serious about signing the 30-year-old, who has a 31-13 postseason record and will be an unrestricted free agent come July 1.

What To Do With Balsillie

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Stephen Brunt of the Globe and Mail,

The NHL hierarchy right now seems determined to do anything in its power to prevent a blue-chip potential owner from moving a moribund franchise in a dead American market to a Canadian city where folks are falling all over themselves to offer up deposits on season’s tickets.
To that end, various league sources have started trying to demonize Jim Balsillie, referring to him off the record as “a clown,” sending out the message that he’s a Mark Cuban in waiting, perhaps an Al Davis, that he’d be a destructive influence on the league. (Unlike, say, the various former NHL owners who have been led away in handcuffs.)

Lookout, Here Comes Philly

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the AP via Fox Sports,

Timonen and forward Scott Hartnell agreed to give up an opportunity at securing a free-agent contract windfall to accept a trade from Nashville to Philadelphia, hoping to play a part in transforming the Flyers from the worst team in the National Hockey League to a playoff contender next season.
“I really feel we’re a playoff team,” Timonen said on Tuesday. “If we can add a couple more players, a first-line center, maybe some experience, we’re going to be even better.”
