added 11:46am, via Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said this morning that he hasn’t yet received the arbiter’s decision, but made it clear that this ship has sailed. Hudler is playing in Russia next season.

“The story’s over. He’s going to play in Russia,’’ Holland said. “We’re waiting on the terms (of the salary arbitration case) he has to (honor) if and when he returns to the NHL.’‘

Looks as if Sportsnet really blew this one…

added 1:15pm, Sportsnet has changed the text…

Detroit Red Wings forward Jiri Hudler was awarded a two-year deal worth over US$5 million in arbitration on Friday, a source told Sportsnet.

Hudler, drafted by the Red Wings in 2002, was claimed by the KHL on Thursday when the Russian league registered his two-year contract in Moscow.

The Next Star

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Dan Rosen of NHL.com,

Who will be this year’s breakout players? Here are NHL.com’s Top 10 candidates:

1. Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay—The No. 1 pick in the 2008 Entry Draft put together a solid second half to his rookie season after a rough first half. He had 19 points in his final 20 games and 32 over the final 40. Count on Stamkos carrying that production into his sophomore season and stretching it out over the course of a full season.

2. Jack Johnson, Los Angeles—As the Kings improve, so should Johnson, who is a minus-42 in 120 NHL games. The No. 3 pick in the 2005 Entry Draft has offensive potential—11 points in 41 games last season—but the Kings expect Johnson to be much better in his own zone this season. He should be with two full NHL seasons of experience behind him.

Why All The Hate Towards The Canadiens?

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Topham of Lions in Winter,

I may have trouble pinpointing how this trend I feel around me has come about, I have no trouble understanding how an opposing supporter would hate me or my team. I am interested from a purely academic curiosity as to why it seems to be mounting. I suspect it has a lot to do with us not being a write-off anymore. There’s certainly that annoying arrogance we all get tagged with thanks to the amassing of a more connected and active “24 Cup brigade” – they say as much. The seemingly endless 100th anniversary (built up since season 97) is some bait, no doubt.

Nothing New On Kessel

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from James Murphy of NESN,

I spoke to Phil Kessel’s agent, Wade Arnott, on the ride up Thursday night and got the latest on Kessel and his contract negotiations with the Bruins.

“Nothing really new to update,” Arnott said. “I wish I had some new news for you, but there’s really nothing major to report.”...

nterestingly, unlike many, Arnott said that he and Kessel did not initially believe the Aaron Ward trade was made as a precursor to re-signing Kessel.

“No not at all,” Arnott said.

So that is where the two parties stand. There were no reports of offer sheets, and while there have been recent rumors of the Islanders and Sharks inquiring about a Kessel trade and the Islanders possibly looking at Marco Sturm, follow-ups have turned up nothing substantial.

As of now, it appears both sides would like to make this work, but the chance is still very real that this might trickle into camp.

Morning Line

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

“Right now neither the Eliteserien (Sweden)  or KHL entice me. When I’m finished with the NHL, I’ll be finished with hockey, too.”

-Wings defenseman Nick Lidstrom.  Much more on Nick from Geore Malik at Mlive.

Also, this should put an end to a very stupid rumor that Lidstrom was thinking of offers from other leagues after next season.

Bertuzzi Talking With US Based Teams

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Vicki Hall of the Calgary Herald,

Bertuzzi expects to land with an Eastern Conference team south of the border.

“I’m speaking to about three teams right now,” he said. “We’re just trying to figure things out.

“If the stars align here, I could end up somewhere where the travel is a lot easier. Hopefully we’ll get something done here in the next 48 hours.”

Could that be a reunion with Brian Burke and the Toronto Maple Leafs?

“I’ve heard the same thing,” he said of the rumour that just won’t go away. “I’ve got a lot of friends out here who are Leaf fans. They seem to have heard it too, but no.

“Not going to happen.”

Will he end up in Canada?

“No,” he said. “I think I’ve been in Canada enough now.”

Capitals Sign Jurcina

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

ARLINGTON, Va.

– The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman Milan Jurcina to a one-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Jurcina, 26, appeared in a career-high 79 games for the Capitals in 2008-09 and led defensemen in games played. He had three goals and set career highs in assists (11) and points (14), and the team was 10-3-0 when he recorded a point. Jurcina was first on the club with 131 blocked shots and second with 157 hits. He added two goals in 14 playoff games and was third on the team at +6.

NHL Wants To Push Back Phoenix Auction Date

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Paul Waldie of the Globe and Mail,

The NHL wants to postpone an auction for the Phoenix Coyotes until Sept. 10 to give two potential bidders more time to finalize their offers. U.S. bankruptcy court Judge Redfield T. Baum was scheduled to hold an auction Aug. 5 for bidders interested in keeping the club in Phoenix. If that auction failed to produce a decent offer, a second one would be held Sept. 10 for bidders who want to move the club.

In a court filing last night, the NHL and the City of Glendale argued the second auction is no longer necessary because the league has rejected the ownership application of RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie…

A Look At Zherdev On His Arbitration Day

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

The 24-year-old winger, acquired last summer from Columbus in a trade featuring once-untouchable, young defenseman Fedor Tyutin going the other way, was the team’s Art Ross leader with 58 points, with his 23 goals, 35 assists and plus-six rating all second on the club in those respective categories.

From both the statistical viewpoint and CYA analysis, GM Glen Sather would be justified keeping Zherdev, even if he’s awarded $4M. But there is no subjective eyes-on analysis under which Zherdev is worth that investment. His inconsistency was matched only by his indifference.

He barely competed for the puck, rarely went to the front, and hardly ever seemed hungry enough to score that he’d give up his body to drive to the net.

Invisible down the stretch run in which he recorded only two assists in the season’s final seven games while going minus-three, Zherdev disintegrated in the playoffs, going pointless and minus-three in the seven-game defeat to the Caps.
