Clark Dealing With Groin Issue

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Corey Masisak of the Washington Times,

Once the Caps’ season ended, Clark gave up on his short-term rehab plan and started a summer-long one. Every third week he traveled from his New York home to Vancouver to visit groin specialist Rick Celebrini, who helped former Caps forward Brian Sutherby a few years ago.

He began a process that involved lots of stretching and working out with elastic bands. There was no weightlifting and no skating so Celebrini could pinpoint what did and didn’t help the process.

“I learned how to - it is very complicated - but move correctly,” Clark said. “It is all the right muscles - you’ve got to fire the right muscles from [your core] out. You need to learn that because it is not something you do naturally, but if you do it correctly it stabilizes your whole body.”...

“I still have a 45-minute warmup before I even think about getting on the ice,” Clark said. “It is something I’ll probably have to do the rest of my career. It’s not some little thing that will go away. It is something I can control though. It won’t be perfect.

Injuries Are A Grey Area

Blog: The Puck Stops Here By PuckStopsHere

When I earlier wrote about the Philadelphia Flyers decision to create salary cap room by placing Derian Hatcher on the long term injury exemption list, it touched on the problem that many injuries are hard to properly quantify.  Most longterm NHL players suffer from a chronic or degenerative condition of some sort that could be considered an injury if it is convenient to do so and could be played through if that is considered convenient.  In the case of Hatcher, he has a bad right knee, which he originally hurt in 2003.  He has been able to play (although not as well as he did before the injury) with the pain.  He has had to have his knee repeatedly drained between games, but he has been able to play.  Now that his salary cap hit is seen as a liability by the Flyers, his knee condition is a long term injury that has most likely ended his career.

There is another case, where the player is attempting to benefit from the unclear grey area that falls between definitely injured and definitely healthy.  That is the case of David Tanabe of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Sharks Have Question Marks

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Drew Remenda of the Seagate Broadcaster Blog,

The biggest storyline for the Sharks is not how many games they’ll win, ( they’ll win a lot) but it’s when will they win them (as in April and May). Here are the other big storylines for the Sharks this season.

PATRICK MARLEAU-Can the Captain continue his strong play from the playoffs and start the year off with a bang? Can he maintain a consistent leadership presence on and off the ice all season? Can Patrick get to a new level with a different and more positive coach backing him?

more question yet to be answered…

Evening Line

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

“That’s a possibility. But there’s no sense talking about that until it happened. All I can say is I have certain goals I want to achieve and I hope to do that at some point.’‘

-Steve Yzerman when asked about running another NHL team.  More from Yzerman from Ansar Khan of Mlive.

A Different Atmosphere In Dallas

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News,

“I think you have to start out fresh each season, because it is a different team,” Tippett said. “The chemistry is different, players take different leadership roles, people are at different stages in their careers.”

Modano, Sergei Zubov and Jere Lehtinen are moving into support roles in terms of leadership, while players such as Richards, Ribeiro and Stephane Robidas are stepping up on the ice and in the locker room behind the leadership core of Brenden Morrow and Marty Turco.

The Stars are now more a team of 20-somethings than 30-somethings, and that means a different kind of atmosphere, on the ice and off.

Yet, for all that change, Tippett said he wants to maintain the same identity – a hard working, hard team to play against that loves puck possession and loves to create plays

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from TSN,

The San Jose Sharks have bolstered their scouting departments with a pair of faces that should be very familiar to hockey fans.

On Saturday the Sharks added former Maple Leafs’ general manager John Ferguson Jr. and former Chicago Blackhawks coach Dirk Graham to their staff as professional scouts.

The New NHL Director Of Media Relations

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from John Dellapina of the Blueshirts Blog at the NY Daily News,

The Rangers will win the Cup this season.

I know this because I won’t be there. At least, not to chronicle it.

I’m leaving the Daily News after 15 ½ years. The last 14 of them have been spent as the Rangers beat writer….

As Frank Brown handed the beat to me in 1994, I now pass the torch to Michael Obernauer. He undoubtedly will bring a fresh approach and renewed vigor that occasionally is needed and you fans deserve.

I hope to bring the same to my new job, following Frank’s lead once again as I join the NHL as Director of Media Relations.

Stastny Hurts Shoulder

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

Paul Stastny came off the ice early today, with his right shoulder sagging and clearly in pain. The Avs’ lone all star from last year had a collision during a scrimmage (not sure who he collided with yet or the exact circumstances), but Stastny immediately headed for the dressing room, clearly favoring his shoulder….

The Avs are calling Stastny’s injury just a “contusion”, and don’t believe it’s anything serious. But as we all know, sometimes things have a way of not turning out the way the Avs first say it is, when it comes to injuries.

Bouwmeester Talk

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Sun-Sentinal,

Bouwmeester said he’s frustrated with not making the playoffs in his five NHL seasons with the Panthers and wasn’t going to decide this summer whether to re-sign or leave as an unrestricted free agent after all the latest edition of offseason changes.

“If I wasn’t [unsure], I would have signed something,” Bouwmeester said, adding that he’s “not closing doors” on the possibility of signing long term.

He said the team’s lack of success “absolutely” is why he’s hesitant to commit long term.
