McCabe Out With Broken Hand

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the CP via TSN,

But worse news for Toronto was that workhorse defenceman Bryan McCabe will likely be lost for at least six weeks after breaking three bones in his left hand midway through the third period after falling awkwardly into the boards after a check from Andrei Kostitsyn.

Toronto coach Paul Maurice was livid, saying Kostitsyn horse-collared McCabe and threw him into the boards.

“He’s too good a player to miss that much time after a (expletive) play like that,” he said.

Blues Make The Right Move

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,

The McDonald addition was enormous. It was just the latest in a series of strong moves, which included the acquisitions of forward Brad Boyes and goaltender Hannu Toivonen from the Bruins and the signing of collegiate free agent defenseman Steve Wagner.

These moves accomplished Davidson’s goals of getting younger while pushing into playoff contention. Meeting these goals simultaneously is tough, but this regime is making it happen.

Davidson and Pleau are positioned to make another move, too, since the Blues have top defensive prospects Wagner and Roman Polak at Peoria and seven healthy veterans on the St. Louis roster.

Five In Front Of The Net

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,

Besides trapping in the neutral zone, the latest craze is packing five players around the net. “Everybody wants to play 0-0, 1-1 hockey,” the Wild’s Pavol Demitra said.

Wild veteran Brian Rolston was shocked against San Jose when he skated to the top of the Sharks’ zone and San Jose wingers didn’t even consider coming at him.

“I’ve noticed the same thing,” Ducks checker Rob Niedermayer said. “You’re in their end cycling the puck and everything’s condensed. Then you get to the point and you’ve got to shoot through that mess.”

This is the byproduct of the obstruction crackdown, Wilson said.

Avery Wants To Make Hockey “Cooler”

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the New York Times (Sunday edition),

...“In a way, I want to make our sport cooler,” Mr. Avery said of his high-profile exploits.

The fans at Madison Square Garden don’t need to be sold. Earlier that Monday, the muscular Mr. Avery, dressed in a black V-neck while recovering from wrist surgery, had made a surprise appearance in the raucous upper ring of the arena known as the “blue seats” during a game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

“Do I really need two security guards?” he asked the Rangers publicist leading the expedition.

“Hey, you’re a rock star,” the publicist said. Minutes later, a sea of fans in blue jerseys had swallowed Mr. Avery, chanting his name.

An A2Y Secret

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

Update 1315 ESTKhan(!) reports on his blog that Homer skated a full practice today and looks like he could be back Monday.  That blog post has been up for at least an hour now and hasn’t been deleted or changed so it’s probably true.

Sssshhhh…don’t tell anyone.  My wife’s planning a surprise birthday party for me tonite that I’ve already been told about by at least 4 different attendees.

How does that affect you?  Not much, but there will be little to a realistically-zero amount of posts today, and I won’t be participating in the live blog tonite.  I will be pretending not to worry about the score, and only focusing on acting surprised.

Feel free to use this post as tonite’s LB.  Also, if you’re feeling all holiday spirity and stuff tonite…you can .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), which I’ll pretend to be reading on my blackberry as if they were super important work items that I just can’t get away from because I’m so damned important.

Always Looking For A Better Puck

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Toronto Star,

“We’re always looking at new things that come across our desk,” says Mike Murphy, vice-president of hockey operations for the NHL. “There’s always a package with something in it, a new puck ... and in our due diligence, we take a look at them.”

Sitting on Murphy’s desk at the NHL’s Bay St. offices are several pucks mailed in from inventors with ideas on improving the puck and its performance.

Among the versions Murphy studies are discs with 30- and 45-degree angles planed into the edges. The inventors claim the shaved pucks bounce less than standard models, especially when they rebound off the boards.

Bouncing appears to be the chief complaint against the puck, and the target of individuals attempting to refine it.

Opposites Attract

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from the Columbus Dispatch,

She has never been in a physical confrontation, she says, unless you count the time irony smacked her between the eyes. That was the day, five years ago, when she met her future husband, Blue Jackets enforcer Jody Shelley.

“My friends from back home couldn’t believe we were dating,” Mandy said. “They reminded me I was the student who always ran to the nearest teacher when I saw a fight.”

It Used To Be

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Red Fisher of the Montreal Gazette,

They’re back, so once again you can expect to hear about the Canadiens-Maple Leafs “rivalry.” The Rocket and everyone wearing a Leafs sweater. Eddie Shack and any Canadien who was within a stick-length of him. Dickie Moore and Frank Mahovlich.

“Hey, remember the time Dickie led a charge off the Canadiens bench after the Big M intentiallly shot the puck into Henri Richard’s face?” That was then and this is now - so what rivalry? The rivalry as we knew it was at its height in the six-team league and continued after the NHL’s first expansion and into the 1970s. Since then, it has gone the way of the grus Americana.
