Wings Disappointed With Their Play In Sweden

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Dan Rosen of NHL.com,

They blew two-goal leads both nights and lost 4-3 Friday and 5-3 Saturday. Needless to say, that was not on their list of things to do in Stockholm.

“It’s real bad,” Tomas Holmstrom, who is from the northern city of Pitea, told NHL.com. “We’re really disappointed with the way we played.”

Not all was lost this week though.

The eight Swedes got to see friends and family they normally never see in the months of October through June. They also got to show their other teammates from Canada, the U.S., Finland and Russia what their culture is all about.

The Latest Lighthouse Project Talk

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Brian Compton of NHL.com,

Wang is slated to meet with town Supervisor Kate Murray early next week after the latter phoned the Isles’ owner on Friday afternoon. Clearly, when the two sit down, Wang will express his displeasure with the lack of movement from the town board. He’ll also deliver a message to Murray face-to-face.

“No more games,” a disappointed Wang said on Saturday night at the Coliseum, where his Islanders opened the 2009-10 season against the Pittsburgh Penguins. “I want a yes or a no. Tell me what you want, then I can tell you if I can or can not do it. Two years have gone by … we’re going to meet now?”

It’s certainly disheartening news for Islanders fans who have voiced their support for a project that has been in the works for several years. County Executive Tom Suozzi, who dropped the puck at center ice on Saturday night, is dumbfounded by the lack of movement on Hempstead’s part, as well as Murray’s phone call to Wang on Friday.

Columbus Extends Klesla

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenseman Rostislav Klesla to a four-year contract extension that will keep the club’s first-ever Entry Draft pick with the organization through the 2013-14 season, General Manager Scott Howson announced today.  As is club policy, terms were not disclosed.

Klesla, 27, has registered 36 goals and 79 assists for 115 points with 456 penalty minutes in 444 career games with the Blue Jackets.  The club’s first pick, fourth overall, in the 2000 Entry Draft currently stands second in franchise history in games played (David Vyborny, 543) and penalty minutes (Jody Shelley, 1,025) and is the club’s all-time leader among defensemen in games played, goals, assists, points and penalty minutes.  In 2001-02, he was selected to the National Hockey League’s All-Rookie Team.

“Rusty is an original Blue Jacket who over the years has grown and become a leader for our hockey club,” said Howson.  “It was important for our organization and for Rusty that he continue to be a vital part of what we are building here.”

Quinn Ready For His NHL Return

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Rosie DiManno of the Toronto Star,

Pat Quinn has just had a swishy salon haircut and pedicure – first-time ever for the latter.

Just sprucing up for his NHL coaching comeback.

“Show opens Saturday night,” he chuckles down the blower from Edmonton.

Back behind a big-league bench, where the 66-year-old belongs, after two seasons of quasi-idling. With the Oilers, a club that’s missed the playoffs the past three years, Quinn – despite the acquisition of netminder Nikolai Khabibulin and Mike Comrie – is the singularly bold-face cast addition.

“I won’t be coaching like I’m some kind of star,” he demurs. “If I start to believe that I’m coming in here on some kind of white horse – or worse, if the players think that – it will just make the job tougher.”
