Tampa Takes Bochenski

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed unrestricted free agent Brandon Bochenski to a two-year contract.

“Bradon is a proven player at the AHL level with more than 100 games of experience in the NHL,”  vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton said. “Adding him for the next two years continues to address our need to build organizational depth.”

Leafs Hire Nieuwendyk

Cliff Fletcher, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Tuesday that Joe Nieuwendyk has been named the hockey club’s special assistant to the general manager.

“Joe is an extremely intelligent individual, who has experienced success throughout his entire hockey career,” said Fletcher.  “We will value his contributions on all hockey decisions and he will be a great asset to our organization.”

Habs Sign Halak

The Montreal Canadiens have signed goaltender Jaroslav Halak to a two-year contract worth $1.55 million, that will see him get paid $750,000 in 2008-09 and $800,000 in 2009-10.

Report- Demitra Will Play For Vancouver

Pavol Demitra will play for Vancouver next 3 yrs. His contract is 4mil per season.

Vancouver contacted Demitra shortly after he said he would not play in Minnesota next season. There is speculation in overseas media that the Canucks contacted him before July 1 which is prohibited. Now it is up to NHL if there will be some investigation.

In an interview with Vancouver radio station CKNW, free agent forward Pavol Demitra confirmed that the Canucks are his preferred destination and expects to sign with the team.

“I think there is a good chance,” Demitra said.

“[Current Canucks GM Mike Gillis] used to be my agent for a long time. We are very good friends. I am very interested in playing for [the Canucks].”

Fedorov May Be Close To Re-signing In Washington

Our thanks to Sovetsky Sport’s Dmitry Chesnokov for tracking down and translating the following piece of intriguing news:

At a press conference today in Moscow, Alexander Medvedev, the head of the newly formed Continental Hockey League, or KHL (which repaced the Russian Super League after the 2007-08 season), told Pavel Lysenkov of Sovetsky Sport:

“It is sad that we will not see Sergei Fedorov in the KHL. Most likely, today he will sign a new contract with Washington.”

Such a report is premature according to Captials officials, though, who said the team is still in negotiations with Fedorov, that an agreement has not yet been reached and an there is no expected announcement.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have re-signed right wing Evgeny Artyukhin to a multi-year deal, owners Oren Koules and Led Barrie have announced.

“We are extremely happy to have Arty back in the fold after playing in Russia the previous two seasons,“ vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton said. “He brings a real unmistakable presence to the ice as soon as he comes over the boards and having his size and speed, along with his willingness to use them physically, will make us a tougher team to play against each night.”

Barnett Joins Rangers

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that Mike Barnett has been added to the hockey club’s personnel as Senior Advisor to the President and General Manager and Director of U.S. Amateur Scouting. In his role, Barnett will work closely with Sather, and Assistant General Managers Jim Schoenfeld and Cameron Hope, on player transactions and player personnel, as well as oversee the team’s amateur scouting operations in the United States.

Newfoundland Proud Of Cleary
