Flyers Trade Rights to Prospal to the Lightning

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From TSN:

The Philadelphia Flyers announced Wednesday that they have traded the rights to forward Vaclav Prospal to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a seventh round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft and a conditional pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

“Vinny really didn’t express much of an interest in coming back and playing for us next season,” said General Manager Holmgren in making the announcement. “His heart is elsewhere.”

Decision Time For Niedermayer

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from TSN,

The Anaheim Ducks will find out Friday whether or not defenceman Scott Niedermayer will be joining them for the 2008-09 season.

Niedermayer’s agent, Kevin Epp of Titan Sports Management told TSN on Wednesday that his client will inform general manager Brian Burke of what his future plans will be - playing out the last season of his contract or retiring.

Reminiscing with Adam Deadmarsh

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Adrian Dater at All Things Avs in the Denver Post,

Christa [Deadmarsh] was telling me that Peter Forsberg recently paid a visit to their house. Forsberg and Deadmarsh were inseperable in their playing days with the Avs, always competing against one another in some kind of game.

Their latest grudge match involves golf, where the winner of a round gets a green jacket to wear and lord over the other. I guess Peter won by one stroke in their latest match, shooting an 80. When he got back to Sweden, he texted Deadmarsh asking what the temperature was in Idaho that day - “80 perhaps?”

The two reminisced some over their playing days, particularly the Kings-Avs playoff series of 2001. Christa and Adam joked to Peter that if only his spleen had burst a couple games earlier, the Kings would have had a better chance.

Edmonton Oilers Sale Approved

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Dan Barnes at the Edmonton Journal,

The sale of the Oilers to Edmonton billionaire Daryl Katz has been approved by the National Hockey League’s Board of Governors.

A source said the approval was granted earlier this morning during the governors meeting in New York.

Rexall Sports, the Katz Group company that purchased the Oilers for $200 million from the Edmonton Investors Group, will now proceed to close the sale on or before June 30 by issuing cheques to the 34 EIG members.

The Trade Talk

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Chuck Gormley at the Sporting News,

If the Penguins secure Sidney Crosby, Hossa and Jordan Staal as their core forwards, they could spread the news that Malkin is available to the highest bidder. Malkin’s price tag has never been higher, and for the right draft pick/player package, general manager Ray Shero might consider a blockbuster for the talented Russian.

The Bruins, Canucks and Canadiens are among a dozen teams who would find a way to clear cap space for Malkin. ...

Is Tom Barrasso HHOF Material?

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

Mike Brophy at The Hockey News once tried to interview Tom Barrasso:

“Hi Tom.”
“Who is this?”
“Mike Brophy from The Hockey News.”
“How did you get my phone number?”
“You gave it to me.”
“No I didn’t.”
“Yes you did.”
“I did not and I am going to spend the rest of my life trying to find out how you got it. Goodbye.”

My thoughts afterwards? What an ass!

And yet I sit here today thinking he should be in the Hall of Fame.

No More Golf Channel Conflicts

Jokinen Wants Out

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From George Richards at On Frozen Pond in the Miami Herald,

Big news in Pantherland is that TSN is reporting that Olli Jokinen has “indicated” that he would like to be traded. If this is true, it’s a complete reversal from things I have heard from Camp Jokinen. If it’s true (and I don’t really doubt the validity of the report), I think Olli figured he was gone anyway, might as well make it look like he had some control over things.

It’s the old “you’re fired,” “you can’t fire me, I quit” scenario.
