Playoff MVP

Blog: The Puck Stops Here By PuckStopsHere

During the first round of the playoffs I picked Evgeni Malkin as the playoff MVP, but there has been another player who has passed him.  Ryan Getzlaf of the Anaheim Ducks is my current choice as playoff MVP.  He has the lead in assists and points, with 10 and 13 respectively.  In fact he has as many assists as any other player has points in the playoffs so far.

A lot of credit has been given to goaltender Jonas Hiller for the Anaheim Ducks defeat of the San Jose Sharks are current 1-1 tie with the Detroit Red Wings, but I think Getzlaf has been even more important.  He has been the player who has made the Ducks offence succeed.

Situation Room Review Of The LaRose Shot

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Video Review: Carolina at Boston, 19:58 of 2nd period

Hockey Operations reviewed the shot by Carolina’s Larose to see if the puck was entirely across the goal line.  The referee’s call on the ice was no goal - therefore video review needed to determine conclusively that the puck was over the line.  Video review determined that it was inconclusive as to whether the puck crossed the goal line in its entirety - no goal.

Evening Line

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

“I applied for the (TV) play by play job in Columbus before the team’s inaugural season and would have loved to come home and been the voice of the Blue Jackets for 40 years.  I didn’t get the job and have been stuck working at the most successful network in TV history. Darn the luck. My current contract (with ESPN) is up July 1, 2012. We will see what happens then.”

Ducks Even Series With Triple OT Win Over Wings

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Rest up boys, next game is Tuesday at 10:30pm EDT.

Long plane ride for both teams and many tired bodies on both sides right now.

added 8:04pm, via Curtis Zapke of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

THUMBS UP

The Ducks were called for just two penalties in regulation, their fewest in the postseason. They took one penalty in the first overtime but killed it.

THUMBS DOWN

The Ducks continued to lose the puck possession game. They were beaten, 56-38, on faceoffs and have been beaten, 92-43, in the first two games. Andrew Ebbett lost all eight of his faceoffs.

BY THE NUMBERS

The Ducks improved to 5-0 against Detroit in postseason overtime games. They beat the Red Wings twice (on goals by Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne) in the 2007 Western Conference finals and twice in the 2003 quarterfinals (Paul Kariya, Steve Rucchin).

Situation Room Review Of The Brad Stuart Goal

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

Video Review: Anaheim at Detroit - 14:00 of the first period
05.03.2009 / 02:38 PM ET

Video Review -Anaheim at Detroit, 14:00 of 1st period - Hockey Operations used video review to determine if Detroit player Stuart used a distinct kicking motion (the fact that the puck bounced off Anaheim defenseman Wisniewski before going in the net is not a factor - Rule 49.2 states “A kicked puck that deflects off the body of any player of either team shall be ruled no goal”).  The decision of Hockey Ops was that Stuart did not use a distinct kicking motion - Good goal.

Just How Far Away Is That Pie In The Sky Summit,  Anyway?  Oh.  11 Games?  Awesome.

The Swiss Boy.  Yesterday.

Khan(!)

“It was nothing special,” Hiller said. “These days pretty much every team you play, especially in the playoffs, try to put guys in front of you, get shots through traffic. It was the same against San Jose (in the first round). I didn’t think it was much different.”

Dude. You’ve played 7 career NHL playoffs games.  And the Wings were rusty.

Stand by.

A Hemsky Trade Could Work Out

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Jim Matheson of he Edmonton Journal,

Would you trade Ales Hemsky?

I know, I know. His Edmonton Oilers contract is user-friendly in today’s salary cap world. His cap hit for the next three seasons is a very agreeable $4.1 million, less than Dustin Penner’s number, although Hemsky’s salaries are $4.4 million, $4.5 million and $5 million during the last season in 2011-12. On the other hand, his contract is also attractive to other teams that might want to trade for him.

If the Oilers could get two front-line players for him, at least one a bigger, stronger body like winger Dustin Brown of the Los Angeles Kings and retrieve hard-nosed defenceman Matt Greene, too, would they consider it?

Is it that far-fetched? I don’t think so.
