Looking At The Coaches

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Alan Ryder of the Globe and Mail,

Measuring coaching is not so simple.

There is an awful lot that a coach is asked to do. He is in charge of conditioning, skill development, motivation, systems design, on-ice deployment and game strategy. But frequently, because of the new economics of hockey, he does not get to pick his players. And sometimes he has no talent with which to work.

Coaches don’t have that full accountability.

Game Day with Flyers’ Coach John Stevens

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

Some questions this morning for Philadelphia coach John Stevens.

Q. What is the status of Braydon Coburn?

COACH STEVENS: Coby’s out today. We were hopeful yesterday. He got on the ice a little bit, but still not ready to play. I think he’s getting closer, but definitely not playing tonight.

        Q. So are you going to keep Ryan Parent?

Hockey Fans Keep it Interesting

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Jef Feeley and Dawn McCarty at Bloomberg.com,

Flyers fans may be plotting their revenge, said Chris Young, 23, a native of the Philadelphia suburbs who now works in Pittsburgh. One possibility is putting an orange-and-black Flyers jersey on the statue of Roberto Clemente, the late Hall of Fame outfielder for Major League Baseball’s Pittsburgh Pirates, he said.

Fans on Internet sites have picked up the call, and are urging Flyers boosters in western Pennsylvania to mount an all- out jersey assault on the Clemente statue, which stands in front of the Pirates’ PNC Bank Park.

Young said he won’t participate in the high jinks himself because of Penguin fans’ reputation. It’s safer to watch the playoffs at home than in a bar, he said.

“I don’t have the courage to go and watch with all those belligerent Penguins fans,’’ Young said.

Juggling Executives in St. Louis

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Jeremy Rutherford at Morning Skate at STLtoday.com,

On Wednesday, John Davidson acknowledged that the Blues are talking to Dave Nonis about joining the team’s management staff. This seemed a bit odd since Nonis, recently fired as the general manager of the Vancouver Canucks, is looking to resurface as a GM and has been linked to the vacancy in Toronto. Is Larry Pleau going somewhere? The answer is “No” and “Yes.”

Pleau, who’s been in the Blues’ GM chair for 10 years, will enter the final month of his contract in June. While it might seem that the Blues are about to relinquish Pleau of his duties or re-assign him within the organization to make room for a guy like Nonis, that is not the case. At least not yet.

Davidson says the Blues need another set of eyes in the sky.

Enough Of This

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Jim Kelley of Sportsnet,

Who started this rumor? An employee of the Coyotes who needed something interesting to say on one of those endless panel debates? Some guy out in the Maritimes who hasn’t been within earshot of an NHL source since the Oilers barnstormed the region to make money on preseason games in the 1980s? A website developer who figured out that by publishing outlandish rumours he could drive traffic to a site that would not only make money but land him radio and television spots that would feature his website which keeps the wheels turning and makes him even more money? A talk show “personality”?...

I’ve learned that there’s a fine line between being out front on a story a day (or now even an hour or five minutes) before it breaks and being with the rest of the pack. There’s also a fine line in regards to determining when a rumour is worth chasing or is just something being planted on you by someone who has anything from an agenda to a mean streak, to a desire to “play” the system. But there should be a strong line, maybe even a wall between reporting everything one hears and a rumour that just might have the smell of truth around it.

Reporters, columnists, analysts, bloggers, media personalities, talk show hosts and even ex-players-turned media personalities have a responsibility to acknowledge and respect that line.

If you have been a regular reader of KK, you know my feeling reflect those of Mr. Kelley’s.  The sad thing is, people actually have fallen for these so-called “rumors”.

Presidents are People, Too

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Morris Della Costa at the London Free Press,

There’s no question the heat is on Peddie. He talked about the two websites dedicated to petitions to get him removed as CEO. One website, firerichardpeddie.ca, has close to 14,000 signatures.

He comes under constant criticism about his performance. Most people would say they don’t read the newspapers. Not Peddie.

“Presidents are people, too. We bleed. I read all of it,” he said. “Some people say they don’t (read) but I have to. There may be something there we have to correct or be mindful of. It’s tough some days. But this job is not for the fainthearted. You have to be comfortable that you are doing the right thing.”

continued…

*I’m not sure Peddie should be too concerned about FireRichardPeddie.ca—of the 14,000 “signatures”, it would appear that about 13,860 are advertisements for viagra and vicodin.

Coming Back From the Edge

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Adam Kimelman at NHL.com,

The ‘75 Islanders knocked off the Pittsburgh Penguins in a quarterfinal-round series, joining the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, who beat the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup Final, as the only teams in League history to come back from the absolute edge of defeat to achieve victory.

His advice to the players in Philadelphia and Dallas is the same one he got from his coach, Al Arbour—keep the focus small.

“More than anything else, what we did, and what Al instructed us to do, was think about winning one shift,” [Bob] Nystrom recalled for NHL.com. “When you think about four games, it seems impossible. But when you look at it as one shift, it doesn’t look that bad.”

Everyone Wants A Piece Of Scotty

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Cole’s Notes at the Vancouver Sun,

One of the sights I most look forward to, in the Stanley Cup playoffs, is that of Scotty Bowman standing in a hallway outside a locker room or sitting in the stands watching a practice ... or trying to watch one.

His solitude never lasts long because he knows everyone and everyone knows him, or thinks they do. There are few faces in hockey more familiar than the man who has won nine Stanley Cups with three different franchises and, at 74, he looks a decade younger.

from Stan Fischler of the Hockey Journal,

• Just Musing Dep’t. If the Rangers made a pitch for Patrick Marleau, it wouldn’t surprise us. …

• Something To Watch Next Year Dep’t. If Evgeni Malkin continues to upstage Sid Crosby, how’s the supposed Top Banana going to feel being down a bit in the bunch? …

• Atlanta’s front office puzzle should be sorted out in the next week or so. …
