from the Lansing State Journal,

A 19-year-old Michigan State University ice hockey player was released from Sparrow Hospital on Tuesday after being injured during a fight at an off-campus house this weekend.

Sophomore A.J. Sturges, a defenseman from Madison, Wis., suffered head injuries early Sunday during the fight that broke out in the 100 block of Center Street involving hockey and football players.

“I want to clarify that there is not a problem between the football program and the hockey program,” MSU hockey coach Rick Comley said. “This was an incident involving a party involving multiple students, not just athletes.”

KHL Deals with Cherepanov Tragedy

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

Press Release from the KHL:

Resolutions of the Board of Directors of the Kontinental Hockey League

The Board of Directors of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) adopted a number of important resolutions at its October 21 meeting that are of great consequence to the future operations of the League.  The meeting focused primarily on matters involving internal medical support services, first and foremost those concerning the medical monitoring of athletes.

Most significantly, the Board heard a preliminary report from a special KHL commission investigating the circumstances of the death of Omsk Avangard hockey player Alexei Cherepanov.  As a result, the Board resolved to adopt a series of measures aimed at preventing future tragedies in hockey:

No Way To Treat Steven Stamkos

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Mike Brophy at Sportsnet,

Call me crazy, but for some reason I envisioned the No. 1 pick in the 2008 NHL entry draft doing just a little bit better in his initial big-league season. Further to that, I thought he’d be given more of a chance to succeed.

How the heck can a team that finished 30th last season, thereby earning the right to pick first (after winning the lottery, of course) justify mistreating its prized possession this way?

Early Best Goaltender

Blog: The Puck Stops Here By PuckStopsHere

Yesterday, I wrote about my pick for the early season MVP in Alexander Semin of the Washington Capitals.  Today, I want to share my pick for the best goalie so far this season.

My pick is Mike Smith of the Tampa Bay Lightning.  He has played extraordinarily well in tough circumstances.  Smith leads the NHL with a .943 saves percentage.  He also leads the NHL’s starting goalies in shots faced per game.  He has faced more than 35 shots per game.  That is succeeding under trying circumstances.

Khan(!): Hank’s Back

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

Two things:

(1) The first Zetterberg injury scare of the season has apparently come to an end.

Henrik Zetterberg will return to the lineup for tonight’s game against Blues, after missing two games with a sore groin. He will center a line with Johan Franzen and Mikael Samuelsson. Darren McCarty was activated from injured reserve but will not play tonight.

(2)  I’ll be landing in Vegas at 2200 EST.

I’m pre-staging the live blog to kick off at game time.  I’ll try and make it for the third period.

Good Hits Means Here Comes A Fight

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Ken Campbell of the Hockey News,

Those who often lament the NHL becoming the “No Hitting League” – hey, I don’t see it either – should take guys like Rene Bourque and Alexandre Picard and slap them upside the head.

This is getting ridiculous. How do you expect to have hitting in the game when the player delivering a clean hit has to worry about being jumped and pummeled by some idiot who is hell-bent on revenge? No matter what you think about fighting in hockey, the increasing number of fights that come on the heels of clean hits are ridiculous.
