Parting Shots

Blog: Abel to Yzerman By IwoCPO

Rusty, whining, sad, somber, alibi-ridden and riddled with anger.  Chris Osgood stopped 20 of 23 against the Caps and lost.  He lost the game and he lost the one-on-one battle with another mediocre goalie.  More importantly to his immediate, and even long-term, future?  Osgood lost his coach.

So You Want To Be A Beer-League Ref

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Sarah Boesveld of the Globe and Mail,

For about $25 an hour, Bruce Tennant has taken countless verbal slams and one physical attack that saw him haul a man to court.

“Yeah, I’ve been intentionally hit,” says the 49-year-old Toronto hockey referee, recalling a men’s rec league game in the early 1990s. The player was booted from the ice after one too many penalties. He came back for revenge – right at the neck of Mr. Tennant.

“He followed me across the ice and cross-checked me in the back of the head with his stick,” says the seasoned ref, who’s sported the stripes since he was 14 years old. “I wasn’t injured, but he was found guilty and was given a suspended sentence.”

The job can be thankless, especially in beer leagues where refs are paid far less than those who do official league games.

Financial Issues In Tampa

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Bruce MacLeod of Red Wings Corner,

According to sources in the front offices of the Pistons and Lightning, the NHL is helping to find a new ownership arrangement so that possession of the hockey team will not rebound back to Auburn Hills.

A call to the NHL offices late Wednesday was not returned.

The Palace source said that traditional financing is being sought so that the Pistons will be paid in full for the sale of the Lightning. That source also said that the NHL is setting a Feb. 15 deadline for finding new ownership.

The Lightning source, however, said that Tampa Bay ownership denies that it is working under a deadline.

Coach Sutter Has Had Enough

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun (Thursday edition),

“Enough is enough,” spat the Flames coach Wednesday, sting stinging from a 9-1 loss that represents the lowest point of the Darryl Sutter era in Calgary

“You look at what we’ve been through this year. There are ups and downs but, at some point, you need to figure it out. We’re at that point. It’s important that we do respond the right way. It can’t be a wishy-washy thing. Responding is the right wording for it. Actions speak louder than words. All the right things are being said but there has to be production.”

More to the point there has to be accountability. Cohesiveness. An elevated compete level. Heck, with five straight losses, there has to be a win. A bunch of ’em.

Either that, or everyone from Sutter to Joe Public is going to believe the core group of players in that room are indeed coach-killers who can’t possibly flourish here as is.

Games Lost To Injury

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail,

There aren’t all that many NHL categories in which the struggling Oilers lead the way, but in injuries, they’re at the head of the class.

Edmonton has accumulated 270 man-games lost to injury heading into Wednesday night’s game against the Canucks, 37 more than the second-place Red Wings had prior to their last game.

Hedman May Be Watching The Next Game

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Damian Cristodero of Lightning Strikes,

Tampa Bay Lightning coach Rick Tocchet didn’t come right out and say rookie defenseman Victor Hedman will be benched for Thursday’s game with the Maple Leafs, but it sure sounded like that is what will happen.

“We might have to take a step back with him,” Tocchet said. “He’s played a lot of hockey. There are a lot of expectations. He’s been struggling. He’s been making some mistakes, so we might have tot take a step back. He might have to watch a game. There’s nothing wrong with that. we did it with Stamkos.”

Datsyuk Talks Dangle-Dangle

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Dmitry Chesnokov at PuckDaddy,

Was this a variation of the penalty shot you scored on against the Dallas Stars?

That’s when it actually started. If the goalie guesses where I move, at least I would have a small alternative option.

It’s like you make fun of goaltenders.

Oh, no. Not at all. Everyone wants to score. And I am happy that I managed to score like that, that people talk about it a little bit. But the main goal was to score. Especially in such a game against Chicago. We already lost three games to them this year.

Was that goal your version of dangle-dangle?

There’re so many people watching you. And NBC was there. So, you try to think how to score, but there are also other things.

much more
