Rangers Will Be Busy

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Rangers Report,

In talking to a number of players about the preseason schedule, almost everyone is aware of the challenge it presents. Some just rolled their eyes and said it was unfortunate. Others were more direct.

“Who approved this?” one veteran asked me. “I know we approved the Prague games, but not this.”

Indeed, while players signed on for the Europe trip, the preseason schedule is made up by Rangers management. Almost everyone would agree that the six games, including trips to Ottawa and Tampa Bay, is a bit much on top of the Europe trip.

Pay Now or Pay Later

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Lyle Richardson at FoxSports:

The Hurricanes are following a league-wide trend which began in the summer of 2007 of re-signing potential restricted and unrestricted free-agent stars well before they become eligible to entertain other offers.

Since July, the notable re-signing was Vincent Lecavalier—who was eligible for UFA status next summer—inking a staggering 11-year, $85 million deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning. The most recent such deal was the Florida Panthers re-upping defenseman Keith Ballard to a six-year extension believed worth over $4 million per season.

read on for more on this trend and a look at the names that may sign some big offers before next summer

White Would Go Without A Visor

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Tom Gulitti of Fire & Ice,

If the vision in Devils defenseman Colin White’s damaged right eye somehow miraculously returned to normal, he says he would not wear a protective visor.

“If I had my eyesight, I wouldn’t be wearing one,” White said this morning after participating in an informal skate at the team’s practice facility at Prudential Center.

When White reports with the other Devils’ veterans for training camp physicals next Friday, it will mark the one-year anniversary of his injury. During a training camp practice on Sept. 19, 2007, he was struck in the right eye by a deflected shot off the stick of Nicklas Bergfors.

Although White’s vision in his right eye improved marginally at first, he says it hasn’t gotten any better since the end of last season and doctors have told him, “This is going to be it.”

Toronto’s $40 Million Facelift Includes HD Scoreboard

Blog: KK Hockey By Alanah McGinley

From Mark Zwolinski at the Toronto Star,

Toronto’s Air Canada Centre will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year by unveiling a year-long $40-million renovation. The home of the Maple Leafs, Raptors and Rock, today unveiled an expansion to the west side of the building including a new multi-level concourse, retail space and more concessions.

The centrepiece of the ACC reno is an $8-million high-definition scoreboard and display system.

More on the snazzy new system can be seen on video at the Star website. The caption on the video probably says it all: “No one claims it will improve the Leafs—but it is a spectacular addition over centre ice.”

Not An Ordinary Exhibition Game

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Dan Rosen at NHL.com,

Even though it’s listed as the last preseason game on the New York Rangers’ schedule and an exhibition game thrown into the middle of Metallurg Magnitogorsk’s regular season, to the Russian team’s general manager, the Victoria Cup is hardly just for show.

“If it is truly just an exhibition game, let’s put away the glorious name—the Victoria Cup,” Gennady Velichkin told NHL.com in an e-mail. “An ordinary exhibition game cannot have such a big name.”

The Game That Changed Everything

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from TSN and files from RDS,

On December 2, 1995, the hockey world changed for both Patrick Roy and the Montreal Canadiens in what was supposed to be another Saturday night game at The Forum.

At home to face the Detroit Red Wings, the Habs played their worst home game in franchise history, losing in a 12-1 blowout.

Roy was kept in goal by then head coach Mario Tremblay for the first nine goals, and the Forum fans jeered him when he made an easy save.

Embarrassed, Roy raised his hands in mock celebration.
