Delivering The Game To The Fans

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Jon Brodkin of NetworkWorld,

Sports fans demand a lot more than game tickets and newspaper box scores these days – they want constantly updated game information and access to high-quality video no matter where they are. That’s why the National Hockey League’s technology team is on a quest to upgrade its Web and mobile video capabilities.

“We know that we have a very tech-savvy group of fans, and we want to leverage technology to enhance the game,” says Peter DelGiacco, the CTO of the National Hockey League….

“In prior years we weren’t able to deliver the same quality of video,” DelGiacco said. For this season the NHL enhanced the service with high-definition video, DVR functionality, and adaptive streaming, which adjusts video quality to each user’s bandwidth. As part of the same project, the NHL and its franchises redesigned all 30 team Web sites.

“When you start watching a game, the quality starts at 400 [kilobits per second] for a few seconds, then it jumps to 800, then 1600, and it keeps going up until you say ‘now that’s good,’” DelGiacco said.

Who Do You Want To Follow?

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from CBC,

Online viewers will have personal control over a near-ice-level perspective as the Hockey Night in Canada All Access Cam makes its debut in Friday’s telecast of the Montreal Canadiens’ centennial anniversary game against the Boston Bruins.

The new camera will give viewers logging on to CBCSports.ca total freedom to choose where they focus their attention during the pre-game festivities and after the puck drops at the Bell Centre.

“It’s a cool innovation. We’re always trying to bring the event to the viewer,” said Hockey Night in Canada executive producer Sherali Najak.

Developed by Immersive Media in Calgary and sponsored by Chevrolet, the circular camera, smaller than a soccer ball, has 11 lenses working simultaneously. The different views are pieced together by computer software, giving online users a real-time 360-degree view of the action.

Rangers Dealing With Cap Issues

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

The Blueshirts currently have only five healthy defensemen on the roster after sending Bobby Sanguinetti back to Hartford on Tuesday. Adding waiver acquisition Erik Christensen’s $850,000 cap hit to the roster (plus an additional $125,000 hit that represents the difference between recalled goaltender Chad Johnson and the waived Steve Valiquette) has actually pushed the Rangers over the cap and into the position where they are borrowing from next season’s bonus cushion.

It appears as though the Rangers may have to place Brandon Dubinsky, who will miss his 10th game on Saturday since sustaining a broken hand on Nov. 7, on retroactive LTI in order to clear space to promote a D from the AHL.

Chicago In The Clear

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

from Tim Sassone of Between The Circles,

The Blackhawks will not need to make a roster move to clear salary cap space in order to sign Duncan Keith, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane to contract extensions.

The NHL wouldn’t have allowed the Hawks to announce the new deals for the trio if the club did not have the necessary “tagging room” for the 2010-11 season.

Afternoon Line

Blog: KK Hockey By Paul

“This is our team right now. I like our team. We just have to work through it. We have to play better.”

We’re in the third month of the NHL season. The grace period is over. This is too good a team to be sitting out of playoff spot.”

“Right now, we’re at the point where talk is cheap.  You’ve got to do what you’ve go to do when the game is on.”

-Flyers GM Paul Holmgren.  More on the Flyers from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.
