Staples: Oilers Likely Won’t Get McDavid OR Eichel

Well, I promised myself I wouldn't say anything more about yesterday's Puck Daddy piece praying to the hockey gods that Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel end up avoiding having to play for Buffalo or Edmonton.

I cringed at the anti-mainstream media blogging crowd grudgingly typing out 1000-word essays on why "The Sabres don't deserve McDavid because they had Gilbert Perreault" is a take hot enough to melt every towering snow drift in Buffalo.

Yet, here I am linking to a piece -- from an Edmonton Journal writer no less -- ripping it apart.

David Staples did criticize the article, but I'm actually calling it to your attention today for a totally different reason.  Analytics nerds have already told you this, but it's worth mentioning anyway.

The Oilers are a better team than the Sabres and will almost certainly finish higher than Buffalo in the standings.

Sabres Could Be Peaking Too Soon

This wasn't expected at all.

After defeating the team with the most points in the NHL last night, the Sabres have incredibly won 6 of their last 7 games.  The day their head coach had to apologize for comparing their level of play to that of a peewee team is a distant memory.

Granted, the Lightning were a bit tired on the end of a back-to-back, but that's a moot point in this developing conflict in Buffalo between fans who want to see their team win the most possible games now, and those who have visions of wunderkinds dancing in their heads.

2014-15 NHL Reverse Standings

Follow the standings from the bottom to see which teams are in the hunt for Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and other young future stars in what is regarded as a stacked draft class in 2015.

Teams are sorted by total points lost.  So, a team with 40 points in 50 games will have a PL of 60 (60 out of a possible 100 points not earned).

These standings will be updated frequently and can be accessed through a link on the Sabres Observer page.
