Zadorov Likely Won’t Play In World Juniors

Based on reports coming from Sabres practice this morning, it looks like Nikita Zadorov will be staying with Buffalo and not joining Russia for the World Junior Championship.

The Olean Times Herald's Bill Hoppe got this quote from Ted Nolan on the subject: “On Zadorov’s situation here, he’s playing big minutes. He’s getting a lot of experience. He’s getting better all the time. I don’t see it happening. But, hey, you never know.”

Also, Zadorov told reporters that he loves his country but would prefer to say with the Sabres.

It's easy to tap into the conventional wisdom that the tourney would be a great experience for him.  I feel the same way.  But he's obviously loving every minute of playing in the National Hockey League and doesn't want to miss any of it.

Mike Weber's absence for the next few weeks due to getting his knee scoped was mentioned in Bill's article as part of the discussion on the Zadorov decision, but Nolan hinted that it didn't matter.

That makes sense.  It's simply a case of an excited 19-year-old rookie playing very well and not wanting to leave.  More power to him.

As far as the segment of fans suggesting the Sabres aggressively try getting Zadorov to go because it would help Buffalo lose more games, forgive me for rolling my eyes.  And this is coming from someone who has repeatedly written in this space that it would be better for the Sabres to finish 30th than 20th.

That's not the way you do it.
